This was a classic, fun adventure following Sharpe and his regiment, and there was all of the detail and violence I have come to expect of this series. As this was set earlier on in the series, Sharpe’s wife Teresa, a Spanish Partisan leader, played a large role. I really liked that this book focused on one clear mission – at the Bridge at Alamaraz. Although Cornwell now clearly has a pattern that he follows as to what will happen in each of his Sharpe books, and the books are action-driven rather than character-driven, it was such an entertaining book that I didn’t mind.
