Nicole | 19 comments I have read 5 books this year and 3 of them have been 1 star ratings!!!! I am now in a slump and don’t know what to read from my TBR. I want something short, standalone, fantasy or romance. Something to get me back in the grove.

Can anyone recommend me a good book!? Please!

Killua | 364 comments it's not fantasy but i saw that you gave they (both die at the end) 5 stars and I think the book (aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe) has kind of the same vibe

If you like badass heroines, seeking revenge on men than have a look at ‘Innocent Assassin’ Sakura Bianchi Series Book 1.
Let me know what you think.

Dee Turner | 17 comments We, the Drowned, by Carsten Jensen, (translated from Danish) recreates as historical fiction the hundred years of his Danish village by the sea, Marstal. It covers three generations and and wars, from cannons fired from architecturally beautiful wooden sailing ships to U-2 boats and the single-man Fokker Eindecker planes shooting down steam-powered metal ships. It's a book with both soul and intellectual rigor. It's worth more than 5 stars.

The Beartown Trilogy, by Fredrik Backman (translated from Swedish), is another worth more than 5 stars--and I don't even like ice hockey!

The first is 688 pages, the second encompasses three volumes, but msg me for a whole lot more when you've caught up!

J (thenakedflame) | 1 comments Try WEYWARD or THE HOUSE WITCH

message 18: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 Subjective obviously. Adrian McKinty The Chain and The Island (not romance)

Nicole | 1 comments Genre would help because I think that makes a big difference to what people consider 5 star.

Most historical fiction are 4-5 star for me but my personal favourites were The Nightingale & Go as a River.

Really enjoyed “The Bandit Queens” for a dark humour book

Marijo | 15 comments With rare exceptions, if I don't like something, I don't rate it. I try to keep in mind that a book is like someone's child. The author loves and treasures their creation.

I recommend Thomas Hardy Was an Optimist, a book of short stories by Circa24. Not quite a romance or fantasy, but really good and currently having a giveaway.

For a slightly longer novel, I recommend Starter Villian by John Scalzi. It follows a young man whose uncle dies and leave him everything, including his criminal empire. One of Scalzi's more comic pieces, this story will have you laughing. And if you choose the audiobook version, you'll be treated to the voice of Will Wheaton, who regularly reads Scalzi's novels.

Lucy | 131 comments The Rise of Kyoshi and its sequel the Shadow of Kyoshi are some of may favorite books! they’re fantasy. they’re technically like prequels to the show Avatar the Last Airbender but you don’t have to have watched the show!
the Kyoshi novels have a lot of really beautiful world building, political intrigue, a tiny bit of romance, and they’re incredibly written :)
