Sora | 4 comments I’d just read a historical fiction where people don’t know someone could be deaf. And they assume he was possessed by a devil except for this one girl who notice he cant really hear the world. So they communicate through hand words which people assume as witchcraft. And they had to fight for their life cuz people chose to be ignorant

I think it’s interesting to see how they handle ignorance in society. And having disabilities/any weakness as main characters and having really good messages behind it. Also remind me of a similar vibe kdrama (Tell me that you love me)

I wonder if you guys have recs on any book with similar vibe as thiss.

Thank you!

Nat | 141 comments The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski is about a boy who is born mute and a drama surrounding his life. I read it years ago and really only remember it being amazing. I believe it was set sometime in the 50s but I could be misremembering.

Vanessa (vanessacumberlandcountypa) Hi Sora,

You may enjoy The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon by Mark Haddon . The main character is a young man who is described as being on the autistic spectrum; he uses his talents to work out a mystery that happened in the neighborhood.

Sarah B | 213 comments Hello Sora,

Here are 2 books I read last year that include characters who have a disability.

Devil Up (A Trio of Westerns) by T.R. Pearson This is a western set in cowboy days and one of the characters is a girl who only mumbles and talks with her hands as well. Its a very powerful story. I really loved this one.

Adrift by Lisa Brideau this is another book I had really loved! The main character in here has horrible amnesia so she has no idea who she is. She wakes up alone on a sailboat alone at sea off the coast of Canada and there are notes on the table. She tries to solve the mystery who she is.

Iron Flame (The Empyrean, #2) by Rebecca Yarros I am going to read this very soon + I read the first few chapters already. The main character in here has a connective tissue disorder (i am actually shocked to find this in a novel as its not very well known - I actually have a connective tissue disorder called EDS - Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) anyway her mother is forcing her to be a dragon rider when she is better suited to be a scribe. She is very small + light and she cannot carry much + I suspect she has joint issues (and she may have the other common conditions that go with it too like Pots). I have only read a few chapters but I will start the book soon as I head read the sample that Kindle lets you read. It was good!

Dark Sunshine by Dorothy Lyons this is about a girl who is crippled by polio but she learns she can still ride horses.

Sarah B | 213 comments Dog Driven by Terry Lynn Johnson a musher who is driving a dog sled but has some serious eye problems and cannot see stuff clearly.

Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra I read this classic last year and the main character has a disability too. The book says he is "crazy" but I believe he has autism. Back when this was written they didnt know about autism and they would have used the word "crazy". I have autism by the way so I see it in Quixote. He has very focused interests (knights) and he does his own thing. And he gets depressed if he's not allowed to do his interests. I found the first half of the book very funny + entertaining but the second half I didnt like.

Turning by Joy L. Smith a ballerina who is now in a wheelchair.
