Cary | 46 comments I’m just curious. Which do you prefer as a reader, 1st-person point of view, 3rd-person point of view, or it doesn’t matter as long as it’s well written?

Examples:
1st-person for Hunger Games series and the classic To Kill a Mockingbird
3rd-person for Harry Potter series and Lord of the Rings (well, mostly)

message 2: by andie (new)

andie I always think I need it to be 1st person but I barely even notice the POV by chapter 2 most of the time lol. I usually can't even remember the POV 5 mins after I finish a book.

♥︎ Heather ⚔ (New House-Hiatus) (boston730) I prefer 3rd person for most of my reads, I don't particularly like to be locked inside one characters head in first.

For fantasy, I prefer 3rd person limited.

Noel ◇I'm A Genie In A Bottle, You Gotta Rub Me The Right Way◇ (noel4444) | 46 comments I prefer 1st person POV :D
And if its like in Chapter 1 one characters POV and in next Chapter the others its awesome :D

message 5: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 131 comments it depends on the genre for me! personally, for something like fantasy or sci-fi i prefer 3rd person, but with something like lit fic or historical fiction i prefer 1st person!

Lol… I appreciate your honesty, and it’s probably true for many of us.

That makes sense. I usually need to like and care about the character to engage fully with 1st-person POV. Exception: the narrators of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories

Yes, as long as it’s clear whose POV it is, I enjoy alternating narrators as well.

I didn’t really consider it being genre dependent, but I can see where that could matter. Thanks for making me think!

message 12: by Casey (new)

Casey (casey_mc92) | 17 comments It usually just depends on how well it's written for me. Most of what I read is usually first person though.

Cary | 46 comments Karissa wrote: "I read both equally and don't really have a preference"

And that means you get to read whatever you wish! :)

I don’t usually think about it beforehand, but sometimes I wonder about it while reading: do I want to invest in one character or do I want to hear from others as well? Of course, well-written dialogue and actions of others can help even when it is 1st-person.

I think that is what matters most. Admittedly, we may fall into patterns without giving it too much thought.

The throne of glass series is in 3rd person, and it irritated me so much at first, but I am used to it now, so it doesn't bother me much, but I still prefer 1st person to 3rd

It’s interesting that the series adjusted your thinking even if you still have a preference.

message 21: by Laila (new)

Laila (i3hbmwdar) | 47 comments @Cary, I agree! I didn't think I would continue with the series, but I think the incredible characters and the plot kinda out weighed my dislike towards 3rd person pov if that makes sense

message 22: by Susanne (new)

Susanne | 102 comments Either, as long as its consistent. I tried to read a book that was a mix of 1st and 3rd, it annoyed me so much I didn't finish. Some genres work better in 3rd, eg fantasy, historical, where romance often works better in 1st.

It does make sense. It’s fun when that happens.

That mix would be confusing. You can have more than one narrator as long as it’s clear, but interchanging types of point of view doesn’t work.

Is 1st-person better for you because you feel you can relate to the character or because you get to know their thoughts even if you can’t relate?

message 38: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I love both as long as they are done correctly.

message 39: by Barb (new)

Barb 1st for some books, but mostly 3rd person. I guess it depends on how the book is written, as well as which genre.

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments Usually I prefer stories told in the third person, but if somebody can write as compelling as Douglas Kennedy, first person is o.k. with me.

I appreciate your dual description of how the two points of view result in a slightly different experience.

Cary | 46 comments Barb wrote: "1st for some books, but mostly 3rd person. I guess it depends on how the book is written, as well as which genre."

The genre does seem to matter. I think I’ve encountered more 1st-person in YA and a slight preference for 3rd-person for younger middle-grade books, but there are notable exceptions.

Cary | 46 comments Janereads10 wrote: "I prefer 3rd person narrative."

I wonder if preference changes over time. I’ve noticed more 3rd-person for young middle-grade readers, more 1st-person for YA readers, and then a slight shift back to 3rd-person for readers of multiple genres.

message 50: by Elvira (new)

Elvira Bergquist | 28 comments I’m a 3rd person girl, mostly since I’m used to fanfics and fanfics in 1st pov is lowkey hell, but I’m reading the bell jar currently, 1st pov, and I’m liking it a lot more than 1984, which is 3rd pov. That might just be because of the writing style, but well written books are good no matter the pov.
