Salma Khatun is hopeful about Blenheim, the safe suburban development into which she, her husband, and their son have just moved. The Bangladeshi family are in desperate need of a fresh start, and Blenheim feels like just the place.
Soon after they move in, Salma spots her white neighbor, Tom Hutton, ripping out the anti-racist banner her son put in the front garden. Choosing not to confront Tom, Salma takes the banner inside and puts it in her window instead. But the next morning, she wakes up to find her window smeared with paint.
This time she does confront Tom, and the battle lines between the two families are drawn. As racial and social tensions escalate and the stakes rise, it's clear that a reckoning is coming...
And someone is going to get hurt.

he has bias and he IS racist, whether he wants to admit it or not

and now his world has imploded. He WAS messing in the shed. Could he have been the one to paint the window?

I thought this one was so good! I'll definitely look for more from this author. it was well paced ad handled some really difficult topics in interesting ways

I can't believe it was the wife who did the MOST damage - Willa just had no concept how much financial ruin was devastating.

I was shocked when Tom admitted he was the one that painted the window. I thought it was him, since he'd been messing in the shed that night but WOW, what a completely weird thing to do

BUT obviously, Bil was the biggest shock. I really thought Jamie did it (or Tom) but to find out Bil had arranged it all and then walked away as the squatter guy was dying

but that last line, that Selma pulled out the sign. OH NO, has she learned nothing?!

*sigh* this was so good, I was sucked into the story and that made it a very quick read (hide spoiler)]
