Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments I think this will be a good book to discuss in a buddy read. There's lots of depth to this story. Enjoy!

I agree. I might lurk about on this one!

Susan Guard | 695 comments This one does sound interesting. I'm trying to track down a copy, if I'm successful I'd love to join in as well.

message 5: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments I'll lurk too, and may throw in a word or two if I remember enough.

Sarah | 18550 comments I've already watched the film. I saw it when it first came out although I can't remember much about it and I've heard it's a little different to the book but that's usually the case anyway.

message 7: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments Yes, it's a bit different than the book, and not as good.

message 8: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I haven't seen the film, although I really want to. I can't wait to read the book, it sounds like it will be really good and will make for an interesting discussion :)

Is there a start date or will it just run for the whole of April?

Sarah | 18550 comments As the challenge runs from 1st April until 30th April, lets just pick it up as and when we get to it and discuss as we go along a little like we do with the group reads. Sound ok? It's a chunkster after all so it might take some of us a while (thinking me) to get through it.

message 10: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Yes, that sounds great Sarah. It will probably take me a while to get through it too.

message 11: by Rusalka, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Thanks Sarah! Back home again after 12 hours of driving to spend 18 hours in Victoria. I'll probably start it over Easter as we have 4 days off, and as it's a bigger book, want to give myself time to finish it in April.

message 12: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Phew, that's a long drive Rusalka! Did you have a nice day at your uncle's vineyard?

message 13: by Rusalka, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Wonderful! The vineyard is gorgeous, they throw great parties, and my family is pretty awesome. Can't really complain, but partying with my cousins until 3am and then driving 6 hours home (7 with stops) was a bit much.

message 14: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Sounds like fun! Except the driving.

message 15: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments That's where audiobooks come in handy. They make that 6 hours zip right on by.

ceeeeg | 14 comments i would very much like to try to follow along with this...i grabbed up copy and i am ready to run with it...

Sarah | 18550 comments Welcome to the group ceeeeg. Good to see you jump right in. I'm itching for the start of the month so I can start this. I found myself in between books so I started a book of short stories to tide my over.

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm going to start this today on my commute to work. Not sure whether it has chapter numbers or names throughout. It starts off with a chapter name so we shall see what happens - that might just be the prologue.

message 19: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it Sarah :)

I will probably start it at the weekend.

message 20: by Rusalka, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Me too. Finishing my date with my Norwegian policeman first.

Susan Guard | 695 comments I'll be joining in as soon as my book comes in. Looking forward to it!

Sarah | 18550 comments I started this yesterday and I'm amazed at how much I've read. Up to page 82 already. While it's over 500 pages long, I think it will be a quick read because of the way the dialogue and the chapters are laid out. Seems like a good translation - everything has made sense so far.

The book starts off like many books with several quotes from other books or songs. This one has a quote from a Morrisey song so I knew from the start that this was going to be a dark book. (As a side note, I actually quite like Morrisey).

I like the writing style. The Scandinavians definitely know how to set the scene and pull you in. I reckon you'll need to read something light and fluffy Rusalka after two Scandinavian crime/thriller in a row!

The chapters are set out in date format so that should make marking spoilers easy.

23 Oct - My Birthday so I was hoping something good would happen in this chapter (view spoiler)

Sarah | 18550 comments Oh and I just found that there is a follow up story in the short story collection Let the Old Dreams Die.

message 24: by Rusalka, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Thanks for the heads up. I have the Bill Bryson group read up afterwards so sounds like it will be welcome.

I ran right over to add to my wishlist, only to discover it's already on my wishlist.

Mariab | 3059 comments There is two versions of the movie. I think the Swedish one is pretty good

Sarah | 18550 comments I watched the Hollywood one I think. don't remember subtitles at any rate.

Sarah | 18550 comments I do that all the time Janice . Have you read any other books by this author?

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11463 comments From my review:

"Unless you speak Swedish, you will probably not enjoy the movie. The dubbing was terrible, the subtitles didn't work well either...so although it looked like it was visually appealing the language barrier was too much of a distraction.

If you do speak the language, you will find that the movie follows the book pretty closely (except for one element). The recognizable literary scenes were superbly executed visually. Just as my imagination pictured them. Although my anticipation had me closing my eyes a lot, hoping I wouldn't see the coming grisly incident, both book and movie made good use of my imagination to their advantage."

I ended up watching both versions.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments I finally have given this a good start today. I've finished Part 1, so the days Sarah mentioned above. Interestingly, my edition doesn't have the year, only the dates.

21 Oct (view spoiler)

22 Oct and 23 Oct (as I can't remember what happens in which) (view spoiler)

Sarah | 18550 comments You comments mad me laugh Rusalka. Scrapbook (view spoiler)

The girl next door (view spoiler)

Jocke (view spoiler)

As for the year, I think it only appeared in the first chapter and then no dates after that.

I started Part 2 last night. Can't remember the first couple of dates now but pre-29 Oct (view spoiler)

29 Oct (view spoiler)

I've read a bit more but not sure if it's the same chapter as 29 Oct or the next one (view spoiler)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I still haven't started this yet. I haven't been able to get much reading done these past couple of days so I am still working my way through my current book. Hopefully I will get to this in the next few days.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I think I am going to bail out on this one for the time being. I can't seem to get into it at all and haven't been able to read past the first chapter. I think it's probably just my mood as there isn't really anything specific that I can put my finger on as to why I can't get into it but it's just not working for me at the moment. I will probably try again at some point although I'm not sure if it will be this month. Back to the serial killer challenge for me, I think. I hope you all continue to enjoy it! :)

Sarah | 18550 comments No worries Lisa. We've all experienced that feeling with a book - it's happened to me quite a bit recently. I do think some books you need to be in the right mood for for sure. I hope your next read will be more enthralling for you.

I have to say that I'm really enjoying this book. It's much more than a vampire story or even a horror story. It really does explore the different nature of relationships in all forms.

Great link Rusalka. If a Dane can't understand then we have no hope.

the end of part 3 (view spoiler)

Part 4 - not sure what the date is - it's the first chapter of this part though (view spoiler)

Susan Guard | 695 comments Oh my, oh my! I finally got a chance to sit down last night and really get into reading this one. I couldn't put it down last night and kept hearing lots of little noises during the wind storm we were having...talk about scary. Then I just had to read a little bit before heading off to work and then again at lunch. I'm totally hooked now. I just peeked at the early spoilers above and I find your perspectives/comments right on point. I'm right at the part (view spoiler)

Looking forward to seeing what's next.

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad you are enjoying it Susan.

While I'm finding parts of this book creepy and cringe-worthy, I haven't found it scary and in fact, I've been able to read it right up to when I go to bed which I wouldn't normally do with a horror book.

Dallas was big here in the UK too and I remember seeing a few episodes due to parents or parents of friends watching it but I was kid in the 80s so not something I followed. That said, I did find it entertaining where it was mentioned throughout this book.

message 44: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Apr 09, 2015 04:32AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Right. Catching up I think.

Swimming pool, I thought back to the In the Woods discussion as well.

Dallas, unfortunately Australian tv is behind the rest of the world, and was almost years behind the rest of the world in the 80s. I have no concept of it :( But I found (view spoiler)

On the way to training (view spoiler)

LOL Sarah, do you have a little phobia of urine there? I mean, I'm not all for waving it all about or anything, but I don't mind a kid going off to take a leak! Oh and as a non-cat person, it's the first thing I smell in a cat owners house. Particularly if they don't clean much or have a lot of them. I've also had the wonderful privilege of moving in with two cats who decided they would mark their territory by spraying my room and all my possessions, including my large school art projects and all my sheet music. Made an impression on a 15 year old girl unhappy already to be moved into a new blended family I can tell you! It takes forever to get that smell out.

End of part 3 (view spoiler)

Part 4 - 8th Nov

Hakan (view spoiler)

Righto, that'll do pig, that'll do.

Sarah | 18550 comments Lol. No phobia of piss. I just noticed all the references for some reason, although the pissball was a bit weird. But i guess it's just a makeshift incontinence pad. I should keep my mouth shut, probably be wearing them myself when I'm old. Lol. I'm not squeamish of bodily fluids after working in a hospital - I've been covered in most things.

Sarah | 18550 comments That makes sense with Hakan in the hospital and also Oskar crying on way to training.I agree about Oskar and his Dad (view spoiler)

Yes I'm liking Oskar more now.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments heh didn't think so.
in bed reading some more and just got the brain cell bit. seems I was 10 pages behind.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments I hit my level where I had to stop. The cats. Oh my god. Lexx laughed at me for turning away and shoving my head into my pillow from a book until he got a muffled "Shut the .... up. I'm trying not to spew."

Was okay in a minute and carried on.

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes I had a very similar reaction Rusalka. I finished the book last night. (view spoiler)

Holloywood film comparison(view spoiler)

Sarah | 18550 comments Struggling to decide what to rate it at the moment. I really liked it and there were some 5 star moments. Then I got confused at a couple points and I'm wondering whether it was the translation (or I could have just not been paying attention). I didn't find it scary like I thought I might but then that isn't necessarily a bad thing. So I'm thinking 4.5 stars but still not sure. I'll definitely read more of this author's work as I liked the writing style.
