Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments @Janice: I'm happy that your toes are on the way of healing.
@Rusalka: I'm so sorry for your loss and sending you and your loved ones a huge pile of hugs and comforting words. I hope for you that 2024 will stop throwing lemons to you and instead make lemonade of them.
@Sarah: that's seems like a struggle to me. Can you give your eyes enough rest to get used to the new glasses? It can take a couple of weeks to get used to them.

message 302: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I remeber those group reads way back then. It was nice we that we played a role here too, Rus.

I am a little bit more used to the glasses today so we'll see.

message 304: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments March has brought snow to Ireland! We're told it'll be gone tomorrow when temperatures rise and the rain comes back.

Kristie | 19137 comments It's been fairly mild here this year. I'm so glad it is March. Somehow February always feels like the middle of winter, then March immediately feels like spring is on the way.

I think we only got one dusting of snow this year, which is fine with me. :) We did have a hail storm a couple of weeks ago though and now we need to get our roof replaced. (I think the majority of the expense will be covered by our insurance. Thank goodness.)

message 307: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments We had some sleet, verging on snow this afternoon. It has been mild here too Kristie! All the spring flowers are coming out now which is nice to see.

message 308: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments My berry plants were so confused this winter. lol I love when the spring flowers come up.

message 309: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I worked in Bournemouth this weekend. Got up at 5.30am to drive doen as usual to find a good couple of inches of snow. It was not forecast. So that was an unwelcome surprise. I love snow. But not to drive in at that time of the morning. It did look lovely though. In true British fashion, my journey consisted of heavy snow and horrible roads which was replaced with flooded roads, then thick fog, then rain and then bright sunshine and clear skies. What a journey!

message 310: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Uggh I wish, it’s -22 and been snowing and blowing all day here. Sean had to shovel before he walked to the work bus this morning, I’ve already shoveled twice and probably have to do it at least once more before he gets home, then he gets to do it and I can hope that is it until tomorrow 🤦‍♀️ We are looking at at least 3 more months until we see Spring flowers 😞

message 311: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Oh no. It was 68℉ (20℃) here today. I sat outside and read for a little while and took the dogs for a walk. That's the best part about having moved a little further south. I think we only had one dusting of snow this winter and it melted away within a couple of hours.

Sarah - Sounds you really did have quite the journey this weekend. I suppose it's better to start with snow and crummy roads and end with bright sunshine and clear skies than the other way around.

message 312: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I had a fun day. I got to the airport at 10:30 and the departure board said: On time. About an hour later they noted a delay of half and hour, then an additional delay of 15 minutes. When it came time to board the plane, they announced that our plane was still in Calgary, experiencing mechanical issues and they would send out another plane. It would take an hour to fly here, and then another hour back to Calgary where I was to make my connecting flight to Hawaii. At 2:00, they announce that our flight was now scheduled to leave at 5:10. I was starving so I left the boarding area to go get something to eat. When I got back, security was closed (small airport here btw). I sat down to hear that my flight was now cancelled.

Long story short - I'm now at home, with a new itinerary. I'm now booked to leave Tuesday morning and get into Hawaii Tuesday night. Argh.

message 313: by BurgendyA (new)

BurgendyA | 105 comments I didn't do much this weekend just cleaning out my closet tossing out stuff that I don't need & putting aside some old outfits that don't fit me anymore to the goodwill. Also started to do some spring cleaning at my yard. Throwing out dried up branches & clearing out for the warmer weather to come. So I could start planting.

message 314: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Janice, I feel your pain! Believe it or not, I'm still in JFK airport. We've been here for 14 hours now. We were already on the plane and in the runway when the captain said we were coming back to the gate because there was something wrong with one of the engines. A 2 hour maintenance became a 5 hour one, which later became a cancellation of the flight and a reschedule on a flight 5 hours later. We will have 5 hours of layover in Panama, instead of the two of the previous schedule, and in the end it will take 48 hours to get to Montevideo. Our 4 days and a half visit became a 3 days visit. I almost cancelled everything and drove 5 hours back home, but my daughter started crying and saying she really wanted to see Grandma. So here we are...

message 319: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Mar 04, 2024 05:42AM) (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments That's so disappointing, Janice! I've had that happen with a flight getting delayed several times then cancelled, but I was fortunate enough to get another flight. It makes for a long day of travel, but it's still better than going home and having to do it all over again a couple of days later. Will you be able to add a couple days on to the end of your trip or will you have to miss that time there?

I need to go through my closet too, Burgendy. That's never a fun task, but it must feel good to have it done.

Sandra, your travel sounds horrible too! I hope the rest proceeds without any further issues.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ugh, such hassles you don't want!! Sorry to hear about your troubles Sandra and Janice.

message 322: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments How frustrating Janice and Sandra! I hope you both have good trips when you get there.

@Saar - im wearing the glasses for short spells. I do think im getting used to them a bit more, although not worn them over the weekend. I should be wearing them now on my tablet but im not feeling great today and dont want to add to that. I have 100 days to trial them so will give it some more time.

message 323: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Uggh, airports are bad enough for short stints, I think that long would send me loopy Sandra 😵‍💫 hope you get to where you are going sooner than later 🤞
That sucks Janice, but on the upside, at least you get to sleep in your own bed as opposed to trying to nap in an airport while being strung along on hopes of a next plane 🤷‍♀️
Safe travels everybody ❤️

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Oh dear, Sandra. I'm sorry to hear you're having troubles too.

I've been checking the flight status leaving GP today, and one flight has been cancelled, and about 3 had delays. If there are problems tomorrow, I might cancel the trip altogether.

message 325: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I hope it doesn't get to it, Janice. I really hope you can go visit your sister and everything goes smoothly.

We are finally in our beds in Montevideo, planning our 3 days here to make the most of them.

message 326: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Jeez, what is going on with with airplane maintenance these days? I wonder if it's additional caution after recent events? Have repair gotten nervous and insist on extra checks before take off? If so, it's not a bad thing but they need to be more realistic with scheduling.

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments @Janice and Sandra: that sounds like some horrible travel adventures!
@sarah: good to hear that you start adjusting with the new glasses.

message 328: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Last Thursday I've had my first day of my internship at a veterinary clinic and I was so tired afterwards, but I so enjoyed it! Lots of information, assisting in an operation, giving meds...Waw, I was in awe.
But...it also has an other side: the cat was euthanised during the surgery and the little dog that I went monitoring, died in front of me. I know it's 'part of the job', but I need to find a way to cope with that. Seeing the owners so devastated, broke my heart and made me think about Spike that I lost almost 3 years ago now.

message 329: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments That's so sad, Saar. Definitely the hardest part of the job.

message 330: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Saar, that has to be tough. I'm a nurse and when I was offered to work with kids I didn't accept. I love kids, I just don't think I can go through the unhappy outcomes, especially at the time when I had little kids too. You are brave, and you will find a way to handle it.

We are back home, tired but happy.

message 332: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Thanks, Kristie and Sandra. Being a mom too, I couldn't work with kids. I think I would bring everything home with me.

message 333: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments That's why I started listening to audiobooks, Saar. I was a therapist for children who had been removed from their homes. Some days it was hard trying to stop my brain from going over and over the same stuff. Music didn't hold my attention enough. I started listening to audiobooks during my commute home in an effort to make that switch from work brain to home.

message 334: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments That is tough Saar, i think I'd find that hard. Whilst it wont take away the sadness completely, you will find a way to manage those situations better, i am sure. Audiobooks sound like a great idea for that kind of thing Kristie. I definitely had to come up with a routine to leave work at work. Doesn't always go according to plan.

message 335: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I went to London for the weekend with my boyfriend. We went to the Science museum, went to a thai restaurant, stumbled upon a protest march which we temporarily joined on our way somewhere, ate chinese in china town, geeked out in Forbidden Planet and bought my first manga books, and went to harry potter and the cursed child parts 1 and 2 at the theatre. The production was amazing, i was so impressed. Part 1 was at 2pm for 2hr40 and part 2 was at 7pm for the same length of time. That's a lot of harry potter in one day lol. Back to reality today with a busy week at work.

Kristie | 19137 comments I think my Kindle is finally about to die. It doesn't want to take a charge any more, just doesn't recognize that it is plugged in. I'm disappointed because I've had it forever (over ten years, twelve I think) and it has always worked great and been perfect for my needs.

Maybe it's your charging cable that died? I had that with my Iphone. I thought it died, but apparently there was a new edition of charging cables. Something with the USB - portals that changed.

I thought that at first, so I bought a new cable. It worked once, now I can't get it to work so I tried another cable and still no luck.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments @Sandra, I'm glad you finally made your destination and that you had a good time.

@Saar, what do your co-workers do for a coping mechanism. I like Kristie's idea of using audiobooks to switch from work mode to home mode.

@Sarah, you had a full weekend! That's great.

message 346: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Mar 15, 2024 02:37PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I'm home. I got home Wednesday late afternoon and I'm exhausted. I finally made it to Hilo, but what an ordeal getting there. In spite of daily rain, we still managed to have dry picnics and sightseeing. I had a wonderful time with my sister.

The flight home was nerve wracking. We boarded the plane in Kona, taxied to the runway and sat there. Apparently, indicator warning lights were on in the cockpit. We taxied back to the gate, and the ground crew checked everything over, then we had to refuel before we left. I was nervous all 5 hours to Vancouver. The delay made my next connection very tight. I had to go through customs. My next plane was waiting for me. I was the last to board.

I got home to learn that my dad was rushed to emergency. He fell in his room and was very disorientated and confused. He has a severe lung infection and was not being cooperative with allowing them to even listen to his chest. He's improved a bit over the last couple of days with antibiotics and increased oxygen, but is still very precarious.

I have some work commitments to arrange and a doctor's appointment on Monday. I may head down to see him on Tuesday. I'm tempted to drive myself. If the travel bumps taught me anything, I can cope better than I expected. I will re-evaluate on Monday.

I will try to get caught up here as soon as I can, so bear with me.

message 347: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments That's a lot, Janice. Glad you made it home safe. Hope your dad continues to improve. Hopefully, he'll be more cooperative as well.

message 348: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Welcome back, Janice. Your flight back sounds stressful. It looks like these kinds of issues are happening more often. I hope your dad recovers quickly and things start to get into the routine again. Don't worry about us. We'll be fine. :)

message 349: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That sounds scary Janice! And I hope your dad will feel better soon.

message 350: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I hope your dad continues to improve Janice. Sorry to hear he is unwell. That flight sounds like an ordeal, I'd have been nervous too. Glad you (and Sandra) had good times after the travel hold ups.
