Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments You've had your share of bad news, sickness..., Fiona. I hope thinks will get better soon.

Aw, Margo, maybe you've got a bad bruise or something with your tailbone.
A couple of years ago I felt from the stairs: from the bottom to the end, 14 steps down on my bum. I had to go to the ER. My bum was just totally black and dark blue colored from the fall, but nothing on the X-ray. Walking, standing, sitting, it was hell...

Jayme | 4519 comments @Margo
I did that a couple of years ago, too. If you did break your tail bone/bum, there isn't anything they can really do. I ended up buying a doughnut cushion to sit on. It helped on a 12 hour car ride.

@Fiona - Thinking of you and your family.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments My sister had the same when she was a teen and fell from her bike. I remember she was in a lot of pain too.

I hope it gets less painful soon Margo!

Oh Margo! I hope is not serious and you feel better soon.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments That's a bummer, Margo! :)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments I have been offline a lot lately. Life is definitely getting in the way. I was dead tired, I spent my last weekend sleeping and reading. I am back to somewhat human :)

Now Sock Madness, my annual knitting competition starts tomorrow so I will probably be MIA until I am done with my qualifier pair.

@Fiona. Hang in there. This is a lot at the same time.

@Marogo, I hope it not too serious

Janice, bummer, lol.

Esther, good luck in Sock Madness!

Margo | 11628 comments Thanks for all the sympathy guys. It's good to hear so many similar cases didn't need medical intervention. I toyed with the idea of getting it checked out but really think I'm just bruised. Pete had a look last night and says I have a beautiful red bloom for valentines day.

Janice, you always manage to make me smile 😂

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Lol Janice and Margo.

I am sorry to hear though Margo. Hopefully it is just a bad bruise though. I have the other side, where my Dad did break his tailbone and the vertebrae above it. But he literally fell off the roof. In front of me, while I was eating lunch. Best use of "..... MMMMUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMM!!!" ever. He also broke his arm.

All they could do for his back was to tell him to rest, lie down, and sit on a round cushion as Jayme said. So of course the next day he was back on the roof finishing what he had started but with a sore bum and an arm in a cast.

Point is, I would be very surprised a slip like you had broke anything, but I have no doubt you will be sore for a while. I was going to say something about Pete looking after you and Valentines, but everything sounded dirty. But you know, whatever floats your boat!

Rus, that sounds very painful. Falling off a roof is certainly not on my bucket list 🥴

message 265: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Oh, Rus! That's terrible. He's lucky he wasn't hurt even worse. Must have been so scary for you. Definitely "best use"! lol

message 266: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Benefit is that in Aus, 90% of our houses are single story/bungalows. So it was only 3.5m or so. But still, when you're 12 and looking out the window at your dog, you don't really expect your Dad to go splat through the view in front of you lol

Main problem was he fell onto his lovingly paved path. I agree, Fiona, not on my bucket list.

message 269: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I got new glasses today. I generally where my 'reading glasses' all the time, it's like whenever my eyes do anything for too long, up close or distant, they get tired and focus isn't great, hence wearing them all the time. They are still fine for distant stuff but it seems my prescription has changed for computer work and reading. So, new glasses for that. They magnify things a bit more. I think it might take a little getting used to.

message 270: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I have two pair of glasses, one specifically for computer work. It takes longer now for my eyes to change focus. If I've been reading for an hour, everything will be blurry for a bit. My optometrist said it due to aging.

message 271: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Years ago, I developed an allergy to acrylic nails, so I switched to gel nails, but the allergy followed along and I stopped getting my nails done. I've been wearing gel polish on my toes for a year or so with no incident.

Two pedicures ago, I switched providers. I now have a fungus on my big toe, and severe itching and burning just on that toe. I went back to my previous place two days ago, and they cleaned the fungus out really well, but apparently, the allergy is back & I can't wear gel polish even. All my toes are involved this time, and even up to my ankles. Hopefully, I can get happy feet again before I go on my holiday.

message 272: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments That sounds awful, Janice. I hope it clears up quickly. I can't do the gel because of the lights used to cure it. I have a reaction to it and it burns my fingers. I use regular old polish on my toes and the dipping powder on my fingers. I've had no trouble with those.

I am not a candidate for glasses right now. My eyes are too different and I'm unable to focus them with glasses on, so I have to wear contacts. The problem I have is that I can't read at a reasonable distance with my contacts in. I'm going to try to have my prescription adjusted again, but man, my eyes already get tired with my contacts. It's no fun. I may just end up needing contacts and reading glasses together.

message 273: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Glasses, I can't imagine a life without them. I don't see a thing without them. My son is 11 years and wears glasses since his 7 or 9 months.

Oh, no, Janice, that sounds terrible. Do you have some ointment to put on the fungus? We had ointment and a spray.

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments I've finally finished the trial version of my scientific report for one of my classes. Now waiting on 2 people to read it and then turning it in tomorrow. I wrote about human and canine obesity and the relation between it. Very interesting subject, but glad that I've finished for now.

message 275: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That sounds interesting Saar! Is there a relationship between the two?

message 276: by Saar The Book owl (last edited Feb 24, 2024 10:15AM) (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Yes, there is! The research had the bond between dog and owner as a starting point and then focussing on a One Health - approach. So, in general that means that there's no seperate approach, but owner and dog are seen as a team in part of the weightloss. So, for example if the owner has bad eating habits, he can project that on the dog and create dog obesity. Also, overfeeding can be seen as misplaced love for a dog, because we love them so much we give threats and so. The approach is that dog and owner follow a weightloss program and are each others partner in crime. They motivate each other to loose weight.

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments It's a bit difficult to explain it in English, haha!

message 278: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Interesting! They always say dogs and their owners often look alike so this fits that as well. I hope you do well on the report!

message 279: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments That's so interesting, Saar. I always tease my husband about that. I tell him that he always over-loves our pets. He's not allowed to feed the fish anymore because he overfed a couple of them and they died. I have to keep an eye on him with how many treats he gives the dogs.

message 280: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Saar, that sounds interesting and it makes a lot of sense to me!

Janice, how annoying! I hope your feet and legs get better soon.

message 281: by Saar The Book owl (last edited Feb 25, 2024 11:14AM) (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Thanks everyone for the positiveness!
@Peggy: there's some thruth in that.
@Kristie: oh, no poor fish! And about the dogs: they can look so cute with their eyes and when they understand it how they can convince us to give more treats, well, there's no end to that. I tend to do that with the outdoor cats too. My own cat is on a strict diet, because of food intolerance and he gets that. He doesn't eat anything else. But the others, they get spoiled a bit too much sometimes. But they are feral, so they need the food.
@Sandra: thank you, Sandra! If it was in English I would send it if there's interest, but it's in Dutch.

Now, I've got my fingers crossed to get positive feedback and make the final version. Then presenting it to the jury in June. Until then, other exams are waiting and internship starts next month. No stress!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Just a quick check in from me, and sorry to be Debbie Downer again. As my Toppler team knows, my BIL suddenly and unexpectedly passed on the 19th. Absolutely shattering news, particularly for Lexx's sister, the five kids, and the 1.5 grandkids (one's half baked). I'm in and out, mainly looking after those people but also us too. It's also my first couple of days back at work.

Sorry for the delay on Jan badges. I hope to get them done on the weekend.

message 287: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments So sorry to hear that Rusalka! That must have been a shock for you all. Dont worry about the badges (says the person who isn't expecting a badge anyway lol), just take care of yourself and Lexx (and the others). Sending hugs to you both.

message 288: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just cant get used to my new glasses. I rang the optician and seems i have these glasses which are stronger at the bottom to look down at a book and they ease in strength as they go up the lense for reading off the screen. No one told me this, i thought wed decided against, what i called, varifocals (although they arent proper varifocals). So i have tired and achy eyes and feel slightly queasy and can't just look places with my eyes, i have to move my whole head. I cant just glance down to the bottom of the screen to check the time anymore as it's blurry. For god's sake. I feel like i have to learn to do read and use a computer again. I feel they may be going back if i can't work them out.

message 289: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm so sorry, Rusalka. It is so hard when someone young passes so unexpectedly. Huge hug.

message 290: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I'm so sorry, Rus. 2024 has been a rough ride so far. I hope you're taking care of yourself through all this.

Sarah, I have something similar going on with my contacts. I can't get glasses because my eyes are so different and glasses give me this disorienting underwater feel. But my contacts have been making my eyes really achy and tired. Plus, I can't read with them. They said to give my eyes time to adjust, but it's not really working out. I end up taking them out in the evenings so I can read.

I have a similar problem with my glasses. the pair I have now is not as bad as the pair i had before but still... I never really got used to this.

I tried contacts but this was worse. I could not focus properly on computer screen and probably looked like a chicken, moving my head back and forth trying to find the correct angle.

message 292: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I'm so sorry to hear about your BIL, Rusalka. How tragic. 2024 has started out miserably for you.

message 293: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Sarah, I have two pair of glasses, one specifically for use at my computer. The other are what we call progressives - varying degrees. The reason I have two is that the progressives don't have a large enough section of the prescription I need for the computer.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Thanks everyone. 2024 can get in the bin. I am not a fan.

Jez was my informal life book group. We would always find a corner at every family gathering to talk about what we had been reading, or randomly text for book recs.

And I had just decided before the toppler that the next books I needed to read were Cloud Cuckoo Land which he has been raving about constantly for the past 3 years, and either The Underground Railroad or The Nickel Boys which he has been imploring me to read for so long. It was to be the year of Jez recs as the yearly is lighter for me. Just... ... ... urgh.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments You know, this group helped that connection a lot ... now I think of it. The March we read Room and In the Woods as group reads and they blew my mind. I told him to read them, and he became the biggest Tana French devotee due to my rec off our Group Theme Read.

That's just made me smile a little. Thanks YLTO for a random decision 9 years ago.

That and he was the only other person I know that has physically thrown a copy of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer after reading it. It is his wife's and her dad's (Lexx's sister and stepdad) favourite books. We hated it.

message 298: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I don't know how people deal with bifocals/varifocals, Sarah. I hope you get used to them soon.

I couldn't work out why I had a headache, and your comments made me realise I hadn't put on my glasses all day. I'm long sighted, so I don't need them all the time (and I am so long sighted I am the best at street signs and working out if the right bus is approaching). But I am noticing as I get older (woot) I need to put them on more regularly for computer work/reading than I used to.
