Sarah | 18550 comments Hows everyone been doing in July? It has been quiet in here.

I got my results back for the 2nd module. So now I have completed the first gear of my degree. I got a distinction (or First) overall so im very happy. The grades don't count towards my final result unfortunately lol.

I am gearing up to going on holiday to Croatia on Friday with my boyfriend. First holiday together. We're going to Split but have a day trip to Dubrovnik and a day trip to the island Hvar planned. It is going to be ridiculously hot though. I might melt lol

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments That's fantastic, Sarah, you did a splendid job! Enjoy your trip to Croatia.

I'm now at my second week off from work. I've got 3 weeks in total. I've watched the equestrain sports on the Olympics and we did some trips. I have to prepair for my exams too, so it's a bit of multitasking.
I really enjoyed the group reading and after that my reading went a bit downwards.

@Saar, I really enjoyed the group read too and yes, it left me with a bit of a book hangover also! How is your bronchitis?

Sarah | 18550 comments Back from my holidays. Well, it has been a week now. Had post holiday blues this week lol. Split and Dubrovnik were awesome. Such an interesting place with lots of history, great architecture, food to die for and great scenery. It was super hot. Got to see lots of locations where the Game of Thrones series was filmed which was fun. We had a great time.

BurgendyA | 105 comments This weekend I really didn't do much. Only go to the beach yesterday with friends on Saturday. As for today just did some laundry after that food shopping at the market. Now I am just surfing the web while waiting for my rice to rise & meat loaf to be done at my oven.

I can understand that you've got post holiday blues. By the reading of it you had a great time. I've heard good things about Croatia. Of course the GoT scenary is a bonus.

Kristie | 19139 comments Yes, Sandra, the kids here have been back to school for about 3 weeks already. I think they started on the 15th of August. It still seems so early to me. My kids always went back the Wednesday after Labor Day, as does my grandson now.

Christine Hatfield | 907 comments I’m sorry I wasn’t on goodreads yesterday and it was because me and my parents were sick with the stomach virus

message 631: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments You schools start back early. They only returned here on monday. I restart uni nect thursday. I'm moff to warwick uni for a residential weekend this weekend tomkickstart my studies. Should be fun. I feel like i've got out of the habit a bit.

Been feeling in a bit of a funk since being back from holidays. Weather has been pants and nights are getting darker. The main thing is my routine is well out. Not sure if routine being out is effecting mood or mood is effecting routine. Feeling slightly off as the 8 week course i was supposed to be running for work hasn't gone ahead as i only had 1 signup and they want to defer to a future intake. So feel like i've failed a bit. Especially as i put a lot of work into it. I'll get over it.

message 632: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I agree, mid-August is very early to go back to school. I'm not sure why they start so early here.

I hope you have a great residential weekend, Sarah. I'm feeling like I need something like that lately. I just need to use my brain for something different. Sorry your course didn't pan out. That's really disappointing after doing all the preparation.

I just said to a friend recently that I feel I'm in a bit of a funk as well. I'm just not really feeling motivated to do anything. I want to stay home and do nothing, but then I'd feel bad about not accomplishing anything. So I end up in this weird middle ground. I'm really not prepared for it to start getting darker earlier this year. That tends to affect my mood and motivation more as I've gotten older. I think I need to get out and try something new again.

We spent a month in Uruguay this summer, and there it was actually winter, so I am feeling our summer was way too short. Night are getting colder already (we woke up with 51 degrees today) and I am not liking it at all. There is no mid season here so I know we will be using coats in no time. Leaves are starting to fall... It definitely affects my mood every year, but it feels worse now. I'm trying to seat outside in the sun as much as I can. I am storaging it in my bones. :)

message 636: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Oh, that's rough, Sandra. I don't want to give up any of my summer and sunshine. I hope you have plenty of time to sit outside and store up the sunshine. I am hoping to spend some time doing that tomorrow too.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments The days are definitely getting shorter. I'm not looking forward to short days again.

message 639: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments School has started here on September 2nd. Normally it's the 1st, but that was a Sunday. My son is in his last year primary school, so it's a very special year and he'll be 12 in December. I've got a teenager in the house!

I got sick again on Monday night with fever, coughing...and went to work the next day. It got worse and couldn't breath, sore throat...went home, sick from work. It got worse with fever and vomitting. The doctor wasn't free until the next day and he told me it's something viral, but because I was sick in July, he suspected exhaustion is the reason. I was 4 days home from work and today working again, against doctor's advice.
My head is still puffed with cotton wool and I'm very tired and everything takes ages to do.

message 640: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Sounds horrible, Saar! I hope you feel better soon. It would be great if you could take more days off work. It is very hard to recover up and working. This is how usually I have to do it, but still I am here advising you! :)

message 641: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I hope you feel better soon, Saar.

message 642: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yeah I'm not ready for darker nights. I have my light glasses for the full season this year so will get them charged up ready. Winter effects my mood most years. Totally agree Kristie, i get stuck in the inbetween too, and it can be frustrating. I think i need to be more active but its hard to get started.

Sorry to hear you've been ill again Saar, sounds similar to last time. I hope you feel better soon.

message 643: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Thanks everyone! After summer ends, it feels like everyone is getting ready to hibernate, but autumn can be really enjoyable to take walks and fresh air. Okay, I don't like it's stays dark longer in the morning and it gets dark fast in the evening, but I try to get some fresh air every day to lighten the mood.

message 644: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Oh Saar, hope you feel better soon.

The irish summer just didn't happen this this year. We could count on one hand the days that could be called sunny. As usual, as soon as the schools went back last week, the sun came out! Like Kristie, I'm sitting out soaking up the rays as much as possible. I love September and October. I know the days are getting shorter, but the colours are beautiful and as Saar says, it's a lovely time of the year for walks.

message 645: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I like fall the best because the weather is more inclement. And the fall colours are beautiful. I like spring as well, but it's rather wet and muddy with the melting snow.

message 646: by Peggy (last edited Sep 11, 2024 08:53AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I like autumn colours! And for a couple of weeks I like the dark evenings, but somewhere in November I'm usually ready for spring again. Today I wore long sleeves again for the first time.

I've been AWOL for a bit and also haven't been reading much (except for this thread and a couple of chapters here and there). I'm having some very intense months. My mom had a stroke on June 30th (my dad's 70th birthday). It was just her speech that was impaired but she recovered very quickly and 5 weeks later it was almost as if nothing had happened. Then mid-August she had two additional strokes within 8 days, and it turned out they were caused by lung cancer, which has metastasized to several other parts of her body. In addition (but likely unrelated) they found she has serious heart failure.

The third stroke had a much bigger impact and she hasn't been able to speak (or write) since it happened. Her understanding of things we say and her memory are not affected, but she does have issues with things like using a fork and brushing her teeth.

She's too weak for treatment and prognosis was 2-3 months, but last weekend she made the conscious decision to stop eating and drinking, which means she'll likely pass within a week. I think the hardest bit is her inability to speak, because it makes it impossible for her to express herself, tell us what she wants, how she feels, and all other things you want to say to people at the end of your life. We can ask yes/no questions, but it's not the same.

Luckily she came home from hospital 12 days ago and my dad is taking care of her (with some help from my sister and me), these final days are sad but also beautiful and comforting, and she'll pass away in the home she's been living in for almost 50 years.

message 647: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm so sorry, Peggy. I can't even imagine how tough this is for all of you. I wish you all the strength and love to navigate these last days making the most of them to have a healing closure. Lots of hugs.

message 648: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Oh, Peggy. I'm so sorry. That's just heartbreaking. It's so hard when there is nothing you can do to make her well again. I'm glad you will have the opportunity to spend time with her and fill her final days with love. Hugs to you.

message 649: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Sandra and Kristie :) it's bizarre how much has happened in the past 3-4 weeks. Especially as before the first stroke she worked out 4 mornings per week, went on 10-15km walks with friends every Friday, cycled 60km easily on a regular bike, and she was just superfit and healthy.

message 650: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Oh, wow, Peggy! This must be such a shock to you all. Such a rapid, drastic change. Sending love and comforting thoughts to you all. We're always here for a chat or any support we can give.
