Narilka | 5728 comments I appear to have run into the "notifications are bugged" bug and, sure enough, my profile says last activity was in January. I really hope they fix that some day.

Such a weird new bug, that only seems to trigger when your profile is 2+ months out of date...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Everyday Tao: Living with Balance and Harmony - Enjoying my daily reading & journaling. The book isn't ideal for I-Ching or essential Taoism, but I'm having fun learning the words. It shows the Chinese character of the word and explains what the characters represent. It's the random old sayings, lore and Tao lessons that make the book interesting.

I'm using it as a writing prompt and casually getting a refresher on Tao. Fun refreshers, new understandings and daily dose of healthy introspection.

That's my recorded non-fiction intake per day. Since I don't try to record other sources of the same. XD

Meanwhile, I started a new LN and it's an older one. The chapters are 7-15 pages long. Fun historical, harem story. The main character is doing her best to not be a "side character". It's a good blend of historical info for setting, active scenes and funny plot progression.

Tang Shi Shi is like the wanna be mean girl that ends up not being actually mean or vengeful, etc. I'm having fun because it's not an obvious portrayal of certain tropes and that makes it fun.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments 🤣🤣🤣

I enjoyed It's Better to be the Empress Dowager 宫斗不如当太后 LN and several of the author's stories are already listed on GR. That's how I landed on Greetings, Ninth Uncle.

The fan translator for GNU was good and they made notes about the other LNs that are being worked on.

Decided to break away and try out My Son is a Reborn Villain because it's a completed translation by the fan translator.

😎 The summary is dumb as heck, but I know better than to rely on those to be 100% accurate. Asian blurb hooks are weirder than English ones.

Glad I tried out this story! It is a funny and heartwarming slice of life.

Plot juggles a handful of popular tropes and made a couple of interesting character quirks.

It's a nice change from the more serious historical setting and insidious imperial politics.

Pretty sky :) Have you ever thought about trying drone photography?

message 1960: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Drone pix is very popular. I haven't looked into it cause it's a different kind of photography. Based on my experience, it probably requires more post processing to get the kind of shots I'd want. I know most would take vids and snip out frames. That works ok but isn't as good as shots.

I easily take hundreds to thousands of pix. Culling (for me) is a quick process and I'm a lazy post editor. I prefer to snag the shot I want and maybe crop. 😆 When you're dealing with thousands of shots all the time, I want the overall process to be quick & efficient.

So, I'll probably pick up drone at some point.

Most places don't allow drone photography. A lot of it is done illegally. Like I'd take tons of pix in parks. Most national/state parks don't allow drone photography.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments My Son is a Reborn Villain: This story cracks me up so much!

Running Joke: ML/Dad is a plant killer. He has tried to take care of orchids since he had a plant care project in school. Only thing he failed in his whole life. Cause he is a plant killer. 🤣🤣🤣

Little Wenwen/son is also a plant killer.

There are lots of little jokes based off this written into the story. Just cracks me up!

message 1963: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'm having a good time with my current LN: Healer Demands Payment.

The cover is actually cute and the story is a cultivation based adventure, romance. It's Chinese, so the romance is subtle and hilarious.

For my mobile devices like smartphone/tablet, I use Brave browser cause it's a lightweight app with good built-in security, etc. I don't need to add plugins to avoid most ads, etc.

I re-discovered it's narrative function. =D

Anyway, you can highlight text and choose to have it read to you. There's options to speed it up and etc.

An alternative for the web based novels & series if you don't wanna deal with copying the text into a file & using an ebook/mobile reader/etc.

I was shocked when the Asian words were not terrible. XD

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Booooooo! I have some weird glitch in my GR Challenge that is double posting some of my "read" books. I tried removing 1 from the challenge and re-add to my 2025 read list. Well the book shows as read on the book, but it doesn't show up on the Challenge list as read.

Stupid bug.

So now I have one book missing and a few books double posted. Lammmme.

About 11 weeks wait for my library hold for the audio but I could get it for Kindle. I'm not going to start KU until at July (Birthday gift) but have plenty of no-rush rewards stacked up to use if you wanted to BR #3.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I made a plan!

😅😂🫠

Found Rockton & Haven's Rock on Spotify.

So, I was going to read A Stranger in Town and then use my audiobook hours on Spotify to slowly listen to the other books.

Well, dang Stranger in Town is boring as dirt, transition piece. This series is not long enough to have so many filler books. I never read the books for the mystery cause they're predictable. Gotta read these for the characters and setting.

I'm totally making sad puppy faces at this book.

To stick to plan, need to listen to next book on Spotify by tomorrow. Membership renews on 6th. So fresh audiobook hours to use.

Strongly debating to ditch my plan for now and do it later.

😅🙃🫠

Narilka | 5728 comments haha Ok! I feel no need to time it with the release unless you really want to. So my timing is flexible as long as we start after May. And we should probably do the novella since it has a plot relevant explanation in it making for 6 books total. I know there are more new releases in November too and you all read more than I do. What are your thoughts on timing this?

I'm taking Nirkatze's message as she's in and Soo as a firm Maybe :D Will cross post in BR Invites to gauge interest but this group gets first dibs on dates!

message 1981: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35626 comments Mod
I'd say, right now, nothing between like the 8th to 22nd... the middle of the month is super packed for me, but the beginning/end is pretty light...

And I don't need to read on release, either... as long as we have a plan, I'm fine with whenever we get to it...

message 1982: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35626 comments Mod
Yea... looking at the spreadsheet, right now I have 8 BRs the 1st to 7th of the month, 9 BRs the 23rd to end of the month, and 28BRs the 8th to the 22nd, including the flexible book club ones... 15th-ish is the worst...

I'm sure a couple of those will end at some point, but we've also gotten really good at replacing BRs with like-genre'd replacement series as they finish, the past few years, so maybe not...

Nirkatze | 21220 comments Narilka wrote: "I saw two more interested in the Witchlands. This might be a party :) Is there a week of the month that is preferable for you all?"

If you look at my tracker, I've been putting (END) or (SOLO) anywhere that a series comes to an end... each time we schedule a new BR I look for a hole... if we're starting in June... 20th, 25th, or 7th isn't bad--Orphan X ends in June so there'd be a hole going forward from July...

message 1984: by Narilka (new) - added it

Narilka | 5728 comments Hmm. If we start in in July in the Orphan X slot that would be the 7ths. Looking at the current BR XLS, the 26th could work. I like starting in July. Do either of those sound preferable?

Starting to feel like Nirkatze... like all I do is work and sleep...

Been on overnights for 2 weeks now, and generally used to the schedule again...

Working overnights, tho, I'm more likely to stay late to get extra work done, since work is more doable with less interruptions than during daytime... leads to me getting home and just winding down, eating, and going to bed... and then overworking leaves me tired, so I sleep longer / resist getting up... so by the time I get up, there's only 1hr before it's time to start getting ready for work, instead of 2-3...

Which is what happened today, where I worked 10hrs instead of 8hrs, got home, wound down/ate, slept off and on for 8-9hrs, 1hr of free time, then it's time to do it all over again...

Things have been crazy this week/weekend, with people worrying about tariiffs leading to price increases... or covid level shortages happening...

message 1987: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yah, price increases already started. ☠️

Hoping that things will settle down sooner vs later.

message 1988: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Last year, I had a lot of fun watching the CDrama: the Double. The actors were great & engaging plot.

Turns out the series is an adaptation of the LN: Marriage of the Di Daughter. I like this author. After reading a few of the author's stories, I have a handle on the kind of characters and plot they like to write. Only problem is finding a decent translation. XD

I haven't read Marriage of the Di Daughter yet. Probably push that one up the TBR to read sooner vs later.

Noticed some price increases on US ground beef, and walmart brand soda... things I buy regularly

message 1990: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Price increases started months ago. It will most likely go across the board.

==depressing==

Considering price spikes usually also go hand in hand with changes in food to more fake/processed aka cheaper too.

message 1991: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35626 comments Mod
Yea... I feel like / assume the price increases will be spread across all products, to soften the blow on the items worst hit by tariffs... at least in the food sphere... big ticket items can't really be offset too much... businesses have definitely seen this coming for awhile, probably... there was some optimism in November, but not for long...

message 1992: by Narilka (new) - added it

Narilka | 5728 comments Have to wait and see how it all plays out. I saw some lower prices grocery shopping this weekend but mostly the same for now. My husband's favorite brand of sodas is up though.

Businesses were also caught raising prices, just cause they could, back during covid, even when it had nothing to do with inflation...

Hard to do anything about that, but hope lawmakers pay attention..

Also, as I told her, sad to see Demonic Tree 4/5 audio pushed back to July 2025 and January 2026, but not surprised... those original releases were super compact...

Reading Demonic Tree 3... combat ran on for way too long, I feel, mostly because the power disparity was so ridiculous that the fact the MCs were surviving was surprising...
