Thanks for being careful but I read the precis when I pre-ordered the audio and I am preemptively sad if they can work it out to maintain the relationship. That would be terrible!

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments 🧐 Dakota Krout has a series called Damsels in Distress coming out this year. It's labeled romantasy LitRPG.

I stopped rolling my eyes at this goofy, gimmick slander label. Cause I want my eyes to stay in my head and not pop out like cartoon characters. 😆

I put audio on wishlist but I probably won't buy unless on sale. I used to love adaptations, but there have been too many bad adaptations. So, I'm kinda meh about it.

While looking for info on Damsels, I saw he's working on Completionist Chronicles next & that was cool to read.

Oooh I just got Apple TV to watch a few things, so I'm pretty excited! They have a lot of scifi shows right now that are decent.
Adaptations are always a gamble, but I like watching them. They never ruin my enjoyment of the originals so I like that more people get to know/hear about them!

I'm with you there. I always kind of wince when I see the news that a book I enjoy is being adapted to the screen but also hopeful it will be good. You'll have to let us know how this one goes.

Re-read We Are Legion (We Are Bob) today, and I feel like maybe I didn't give the book a fair shake back in 2018... not sure if I was distracted and not listening the first time, or doing too many BRs and not enjoying them (I remember that being a problem in 2018, the first year of the competition, altho I do it again and like it these days)...

Either way, I re-read it, really liked it, and was reminded of Children of Time, and Ghosts of Tomorrow, and a bunch of other stuff...

I got Bobiverse 1-3 a few months ago with KU Whispersync pricing... I said at the time that I think I paid $2/$6/$2 for them... haven't picked up 4-5 yet, but I think they're full $7.49 each with Whispersync... at the time I don't think 5 was out yet?...

Could be wrong, but it's hard to tell, since Audible has an annoying tendency to just backdate audiobooks and act like they came out the same day as the ebook, and that isn't always true...

I'm definitely excited for Murderbot being out this year--there's a few promotional images floating around... I kind of wish they'd done some more with makeup to make Alexander Skarsgaard look more non-gender-specific, but I can see (view spoiler) Lots of questions...

message 1921: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I may have to binge watch Murderbot. XD lol

But my I should watch this list is getting rather long and I haven't tried to catch up with it either.

Skarsgaard is a great actor! I was all iffy about it until I saw that he's gonna be Murderbot. Though, I don't know how Skarsgaard will pull off inner Murderbot snark or how that will come across the screen. I feel like "emotionless face" is what Murderbot looks like most of the time. XD

Or maybe annoyed face. HUMANS! So annoying! XD

The book I jumped to instead was The Book of Doors...

I picked it up as a daily deal last summer, or a weekly/monthly Audible sale option... either way, it's been moldering for months, then last week Brittany, in my other group, posted a 5 star mini-review praising the book, and I found it in my library, and moved it up my TBR... I meant to see if anyone wanted to join me for any of the standalones I planned to read soon, but that never happened and here I am...

This book has been awesome... world with magic books that can do thing, and the Book of Doors is for teleporting around the world to any door you can picture in your mind accurately enough... but it can also be used to travel through time, too... doors are 4D through history and the future, as well...

Book reminds me of Paradox Bound, a bit, and has been rife for theorizing, since the end of Part 1 of the story... I'm closing in on the end now, with Part 5, and I've loved every minute of it, when I wasn't nailbitingly worried about the characters...

I feel like I've had too much free reading time lately... read 17 solo books this month... but also still read/reading 45 BRs, so I'm not really reading less BRs, just reading faster/more and accomplishing more... only time I've ever done more BRs was last Jan/Feb when I did 51-57, partially because of medical leave...

I only keep mine open because my family is on there... I haven't used it seriously since 2009, when I graduated college...

I can use DMs on there to message my aunt/grandma internationally at no additional cell phone plan fees, and check on my brother who otherwise estranged himself in Edinburgh a decade or so ago... occasional plans to reconnect with family have fallen through, and I get asked to check his posts sometimes, as proof of life/etc... my grandma is pre-tech :D

Now I need to catch up on ratings/reviews... I started working on it last week, with a GG&G post, then accidentally hit F9 and lost all my work since that's the Firefox hotkey to go into Reader View, which acts like a page reload... finally dug up the config setting to disable that, so that stops happening when I get type-hyper...

Just need to get back to it... post mini-reviews to GG&G for January 28th to today, then use that all the way back to the 7th or 20th or whenever, and catch up on like 100 official reviews...

I kept it because it's one of the main ways I kept in touch with one of my hobby scenes.

But a few months ago, when I found out how much data mining FB/Meta did on me cause I "went with the flow & kept hitting accept" with all the changes and thought I had stayed up to date on access, etc. Nope!

I should have known what was going on when I realized my shopping on Amazon was getting picked up and shown on FB/Instagram.

It was one of those moments when what you know gets a real life hammer pound on how it applied to your life and seeing how much information was given away for miscellaneous profit. Big eye opener. It took only a few minutes to deactivate external app usage info gathering by Meta.

But it took over 90 minutes for me to remove myself from a really LONG list of ad lists. Each one, BY DEFAULT, could add you to another ad list. These ad lists can be sold for money and has misc amount of info about you. ☠️

These changes to my phone & tablet were made by just using the app. There haven't been any new "here are changes to the app and changes to blah blah" in a few years. So there was a change in the Terms that basically gave Meta blanket permission to make whatever changes and users accept all changes just by using the app.

I generally check FB settings once or twice a year to see if my settings are the same cause some updates will change them to a new default.

Yeah even with me keeping an eye out, I didn't catch the changes. I had to do a search just to figure out where Meta hid the deactivation setting. They buried it in a few groupings that don't make sense.

I decided to keep Instagram. While it is also a Meta app, the updates on it aren't like FB and less insidious. It was my compromise to keep partial touch with my social circles.

Joined BlueSky. That app is better, but it's built more for info sharing & not socializing.

message 1946: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments In my current LN, I've been laughing almost every other chapter! 😆🤣

There's a saying something along the lines:

The pig that I raised with so much effort finally knows how to dig up cabbages!

In the story, the main dude's grandfather wants him to get married and have kids, etc. This saying was in response to male MC saying he'll move back into the family manor with his wife.

Said wife is currently his gf, female MC.

There are awesome, over the top and hilarious characters in this story of tough smarties.

message 1947: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Master Pei's Wife is a Devil Concubine - This story cracks me up! 80% of the story & progress is predictable, and that 20% of what the heck random stirs up the pot and makes the whole better.

Thankfully, this one has a full fan-translation. Though there are errors within that. Not enough to detract from the story though. Pretty sure there was one chapter that was missing a page, but I could figure out what mostly happened from the following pages.

You know how super explicit romances have become the hot thing in romance? Well, the romance in this story is hot, but it's Chinese. So, it's mostly hint, outline, etc and leave it to the reader's imagination. Explicit in the most tame manners possible. (Chinese writing has censorship & you can't write about anything above the neck in detail. Can only allude, etc.)

It is so dang cute!

I'm more than halfway done now. Started with one transmigrated female MC from the past into modern setting. Then ya find out that the male MC has dreams about his past life, and that past life completely influenced his current one. It takes him a while to figure this out. Now, there are MORE transmigrated side characters and they're all causing a ruckus.

My favorite blend of situational and smart humor is all over this story. On the "Bwahahahahah" fluff with substance entertainment scale, I'd give it 5 stars!

In essence, this is a love story about star crossed lovers that finally get a chance to be together in another lifetime. The fun comes from the way the author integrates the historical persona in the modern world and the somewhat random ways that she establishes herself as a strong, smart and "devlish" woman in the present day.

The story doesn't get too bogged down in describing setting, characters, etc. You get all that handed to you within the story. There's a wacky mix of story happening on the page and these shout outs to the reader via internet media commentary or text style audience response written into the storyline.

Basically creates the atmosphere that you're an active audience member and watching the story happen live.

I have to say this is one of those stories that breaks the rules for writing format and yet it works because of the way the story was setup and told from the get go. It doesn't feel like it's going out of character, because the writing sticks within the unique setting boundaries that were established on page one.

There's less complicated stuff happening in this story vs the last one I read, but I'm enjoying this one more because of how well the characters & events flow. It's full of active scenes, interesting takes on entertainment career, family/friend drama and the power of a smart mind with brawn & money. Anything is possible!

There's fights, face slaps, cozy meals, teasing friends and danger. Plus the most tame & yet sassy romance with the main couple.

I thought it was LitRPG, but it's really more like Bobiverse or my Terminator books... MC is a cyborg with amnesia, about a century after a Skynet Scenario... awakens a human from cryofreeze because lonely, and tries to figure out what's going on...
