Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Ramen is easy to make fancy. You can add chopped onions, scallions, mushrooms--anything ya want.

Trick is to make broth and boil stuff first like eggs or veg. Then add noodles and simmer for about 3-4min. Then it's eating time! Woo

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments The Tale of Genji, Volume One - This is SO NOT Mushashi.

🤣🤣🤣

On one hand, back in the time period of the story, none of the things that are happening are out of bounds for a royal prince.

But! I'm just like, Genji is the most boring, emotionally ignorant, haphazard player of the times.

Not enough details about the setting and many side characters are translated to make this feel like a far, away and gone historical.

message 1554: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21220 comments I kind of feel like Genji was like, bad-girl wish fulfillment written by a women who really didn't know men that well...

I haven't ever read the whole thing--but I read chapters in my kobun class in college.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments This is ancient illicit romance! So many taboos!

🤣🤣🤣

Got the audio on sale. I am a bit sad I bought this trashy around 1000 year romance novel.

But ya know, she hand wrote this mega epic.

message 1556: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21220 comments I mean, it's the world's first novel. So, kind of like, something to check off your bucket list.

Isn't it great though, that the world's first novel is basically an epic trashy romance? Romance readers still dominate sales today.

message 1557: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments When you think about the time when this was written, there's all sorts of kudos for the lady author. Makes me wonder how much of her life, fears and wishes went into the tale.

message 1558: by Nirkatze (last edited Jan 02, 2025 03:29PM) (new)

Nirkatze | 21220 comments I read this in high school and enjoyed it: The Tale of Murasaki--Historical fiction about Lady Murasaki's life. Fascinating era of history.

Liza Dalby is also the author of Geisha--one of the very few Westerners to receive Geisha training (if not only one).

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Father of Constructs is on the current Audible monthly sale as The Janitor Killed the World Boss.

It's a much catchier and ridiculous title.

So, I got it and starting it now. I hope I do not regret this impulse buy.

XD

One of my reviews just got liked by Scottsdale Public Library, an account run by the employees of the public library in Scottsdate, Arizona...

Looks like the reviews are books read by the librarians on staff there... and one of them just read He Who Fights With Monsters 1...

Guess they also have a group for book discussions and stuff... definitely caught my attention in my notifications :D

message 1563: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Nice! Ya so popular. ;)

message 1564: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21220 comments Ooh shiny!! That reminds me of the first time I had a review liked by an author. I took a screenshot of that notification. I think I've had it happen twice...

message 1565: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments It happens more than you think. Depends on who you read. XD

Just review more and you'll find out. XD

But it is COOL every time it happens! Woo~~~

All the previous Goodreads Reading Challenge awards have disappeared from my profile and every profile I've checked... so what's even the point of the challenge anymore, with no tracking of history?...

message 1568: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35630 comments Mod
Never mind... I found it... you can only view reading challenges from within the new Reading Challenge window, which you are directed to from a button when you click on your profile tab at the top, where you can see recommendations, friend requests, etc...

Further removing the ability to view friend challenges, tho... current year and previous years... GR is slowly removing everything...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Basically a savory, homemade cookie with easy ingredients. XD

It's easier to make my own than to try stuff from the store. Too many processed crap makes my system go into revolt.

Used a gluten free baking flour mix that has rice flour vs beans, added some tapioca flour, eggs, a bit of water and seasonings.

Father of Constructs #1 - I finished!

Ebooks are on KU and there's the KU to Audible discount for audio. I got the audio, but I ended up reading & skimming the ebook because certain details kept slipping by me when I was listening to audio.

The audio production is a bit off I think? It sounds fine on headphones, but not great on speakers. Narration was good though. I like it when they split the dialogue parts between male & female narrators consistently throughout the story. None of that chapter swap stuff.

I actually liked it a lot. It's getting 3 stars because it's a bit lacking in details for certain aspects, but the characters were well established and the overall plot progression was interesting.

I would call this book a Cozy LitRPG, because of Harvey, the main character. He's an old man that had a tough life, but he has a heart of gold and a positive outlook on life/people. So, in a way, he's really naive & innocent 67 year old. The first 1/3 is a bit slow and there's definitely a 'how is this old nice guy gonna survive his own nature' vibe going.

Haven't decided how I'm going to read the rest of the series, but as long as the characters stay true to character--the plot progression should be fun!

They did a butter meal on Gastronauts (cooking show on dropout.tv where comedians give chefs a challenge to make a food to a theme or goal)... one person really liked butter, and wanted an entire meal of butter... it was like flavored butters and a butter-infused wine, I think... generally...

https://youtu.be/vYj9Wso2Tbc?t=1368

edited the link to when they present the butter foods... didn't realize that was the whole episode uploaded to youtube...

Brennan and Izzy had the time of their life in that episode (the pair in the middle... they're married, and had a kid a few months before filming this, so it's a chance to get out of the house and eat some food)... Brennan was the first challenge of the episode I think, and he just had the poor kid math challenge, out of the belief that the heavier the food is, the better it is, so the meals were weighed on a scale... and he kept one of the dishes to eat while the 2nd round of food was being made, lol...

My neighbors are savages... 9 years in my apartment building... dozens/hundreds of neighbors... and I swear I'm the only one that shovels any snow... the rest just brush their car, get in and hope for the best over a foot of snow...

I don't shovel much, but I shovel what's needed to make getting into and out of my car and apartment clean... at least 1-2 feet on all sides of my car around my parking spot, the 10ft square of sidewalk between my apartment and car, push the snow far enough away to not blow back, and maybe a path to the trash dumpster...

And sprinkle some ice melt provided by landlords...

What feels like the bare minimum, but is somehow too much for most people...

Fried ice cream is rather good if done right! Awesome textures and flavor mix. Gotta have it done right though. No crappy Applebee's or some other chain restaurant monstrosities.

I like Orlando People more than Andrea Vernon, I think...

I think it's a mom & dad with their two grown sons (like 30-20) and maybe daughter in law? It's a full house. Which is kinda crazy to me cause the townhouses I'm in now are not that big.
