I am seriously considering making my local book club of mainstream not-quite-literary-snobs read Dungeon Crawler Carl for my choice next year...
Scalzi has announced his next novel - When the Moon Hits Your Eye - due out March 25, 2025!The blog announcement is pretty funny: https://whatever.scalzi.com/2024/05/1...

So far I've talked my husband and one couple friends of ours into reading it. Husband finds it hilarious. I need to hear back from my friends still.

Please tell me it's a love story that goes crazy.
o/` When the moon hits your eye like a big piece of pie, it's l'amore... o/`
My dad would always follow that up with o/` when you're swimming in the creek and an eel bites your cheek it's a moray! o/`

Went and read that blog post and LOL!! Better than a romance going crash. Who doesn't love cheese?
So, I did a full re-read of Wandering Inn volume 1 yesterday and the day before... BR TBR Pile be damned... I think 4-6 weeks is about as long as I can go without reading something not on my official plans :D
Back to the Book Mines I toil...

Timelord Iain wrote: "Things can ALWAYS get more fucked up, in Dungeon World…"Truer words, man. So true.
Also, @Narilka's note caused a big (view spoiler) in all caps in my brain, in Donut's voice...

Timelord Iain wrote: "Things can ALWAYS get more fucked up, in Dungeon World…"Yeah, you aren't kidding. Ch 16. This guy is a horror writer right? Because that was a pretty horrific way to kill (view spoiler)
Timelord Iain wrote: "He wrote Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon"This is my first time reading the author. I saw he has other books but... yeah, maybe after DCC.
I was a bit terse, but Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon has a bit of a reputation as one of the most graphic horror LitRPGs out there... I haven't read it...
Timelord Iain wrote: "I was a bit terse, but Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon has a bit of a reputation as one of the most graphic horror LitRPGs out there... I haven't read it..."Hm... I was really interested in reading it... until that description.
Timelord Iain wrote: "I was a bit terse, but Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon has a bit of a reputation as one of the most graphic horror LitRPGs out there... I haven't read it..."Yeah, sounds like it's going to be a pass for me unless you guys read it first and are convincing.
General book and series commentary now that I'm at ~50% of The Gate of the Feral Gods (view spoiler)

I just finished the Age of Madness trilogy by Joe Abercrombie and I feel as though it may be the most bittersweet ending to a trilogy I've ever read. The wait until whenever the author decides to write the next trilogy for his First Law world is going to be brutal since I can't get enough of that world!

Yeah, I heard that too. It's gonna be its own thing, not part of the First Law world. I can't wait for it to be done, though. Maybe then he'll go back to writing First Law books.

Just those and this though, I think, right?
Has Abercrombie written the rest of the Devils trilogy?... or been struggling the last couple years with book 1?...
With First Law, he generally writes the whole trilogy before releasing anything...

No clue although I have heard rumors that if/when he goes back to First Law he plans to do another trilogy of standalone books that advance the timeline before the official trilogy.
Oh gods, I would not want Black Dow in my life... (and I know that's not what you meant but this was my first reaction, lol)Actually, make that anyone in the First Law world... I would so not survive...
lol. Yeah me either. But I loved the gritty dark northerner characters (and hated). I’m slumping a bit in my reading choices lately and could use something like it again.
Brian wrote: "lol. Yeah me either. But I loved the gritty dark northerner characters (and hated). The characters aren't exactly gritty, more... well, like a 1970s rock band if they were a fantasy-world mercenary band, with a great dose of humor, but it's the first thing I thought of (for some reason) when reading your comment...
@Brian, if you haven't already, check out John Gwynne's books. While not the same as Joe Abercrombie, his books are relatively similar in style.
Brian wrote: "Yes I have and it was great. I still need to read book 2 tho."Book 2 is really fun also... both different and similar... definitely gave of punk vibes... I remember when reading these that they felt like parsley. Like--something to cleanse the palate between book hangovers... breath of fresh air...
I’ve read all of John Gwynn and love those stories. I will put book two of Kings of Wyld on my front burner. I need some brain candy
I'm ready for my new neighbors to become my ex-neighbors... I dunno if they're new neighbors, or just gained a new annoying friend, but this guy is driving me up the wall... he's either an angry drunk, on drugs, or crazy, cause he's constantly instigating arguments and noisiness outside at all hours of the day and night... but it's so inconsistent and sporadic... 10-20-30 minutes outside, then 40-50-75 minutes inside, for hours on end... they were doing it from 3-7am a few days ago, were outside when I left for work at 3:50am this morning, and have been noisy off and on from 1-4pm since I got home, partially hampered by the heavy rainstorms passing through...
I thought the noisy kids of the past were bad... I miss them, at this point... kids are just playing, this dude is telling his friends he's gonna kill them...

Not that I've noticed, unless it happened while I was at work...
I've been waffling on it, since if the police don't do enough, it'll just paint a target on me...
I need to find my lease, too, see if there's something in it I can complain to the landlord about (I think there is), and/or a noise ordinance for being so noisy in the middle of the night...
I used to know exactly where my lease was, now I think it's in a storage tub somewhere, from my month living out of a hotel from the water last year...

I found my lease, and all the rules about "reasonable noise"... I think I'll lodge a complaint with landlord on Monday, and maybe they'll call and ask other neighbors for corroboration or something...
Or maybe they'll just trust me, since this'll be my first complaint in like 8-9 years...
