Narilka | 5728 comments Wow Virginie. That's quite a family history you have. You mom had to be strong to survive that.

I'm half way through Ch 9 and it made me sad. (view spoiler)

Reading brings stuff out sometimes... can be cathartic or triggering, depending...

Choko has plenty of life experiences that get referenced sometimes...

I mention stuff sometimes, especially when I get morbid about my mom (3 more years and I'll be older than she was when she passed 15 years ago... few days before she would have turned 40 and I turned 22)...

It can be a beautiful thing, esp when it helps you process and release something that happened.

Yeah, she's one of the strongest people I know... Had I gone through even half of what she did, I would have just given up honestly.

The Pol Pot regime and the genocide by the Khmers rouges isn't a very well known part of history, weirdly (or not so weirdly depending on how cynical you are :p). I was amazed at the sheer number of tourists going to Cambodia to see the temples of Angkor (Angkor Vat being the most famous) and realizing the country has a bloodier history than they thought.

Stories have so much power that it scares me sometimes. I read/watch very emotionally charged stories once in a while to help me process 'cause I can't seem to let go of the tight leash I have on my emotions on my own.

For sure... I felt like a bit of a sociopath for awhile, failing to process several family deaths when I was a kid through college... but I cried it out, a decade later, with the right book :D ... it's all good / healing...

message 716: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Books are very cathartic! They honestly keep me surviving through the rough days, but having a great group of people to discuss them and the feelings they provoke, is priceless! You have no idea how many times having been really down in Real Life, I dragged myself back here, and just reading and being with the people we have been reading with for a while, has gotten me out of the dumps! If I was paying a therapist for all that, I would have been broke years ago...:)

Virginie, I am so sorry your family has gone through all this! I remember thinking how horrible Pol Pot must have been, when China and Vietnam had to intervene and get rid of him themselves... Another "mistake" the US government did at the time, supporting him... I will never forget one of his sayings, which sounds completely insane today "To spare you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss" ... He was the prototype for an ideological dictator!

message 717: by Tonari no Emily (new)

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Oh wow, my heart goes out to you and your family Virginie! That is certainly a whole lot more than I could imagine surviving. Your mother really must be a strong woman! Thank you for sharing...

I have watched a couple mini documentaries on the Pol Pot years (less than an hour each) and if they are anything close to reality, I would not have survived. Nor do I want to know just how bad the reality was.

That said, I'd love to visit Cambodia and see Angkor Wat and other ancient sites now that the country is turning around. No idea if the opportunity will present itself yet though as I'm not actively working to make this happen due to other obligations :)

To get philosophical... is that not what we are? The stories that we tell ourselves? ;) The ability of a well told story to move us in almost magical ways never ceases to amaze and delight. It's part of why I love books so much.

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 749 comments Hey guys, though I would check out this club. Read back two pages to see what's going on. If I was Mel I would write a short story about stumbling through the door and seeing everyone in a hug and getting all awkward about it.

I am sorry to hear you all went through so much bad stuff in your lives. Makes me appreciate how my life is basically a smooth sail compared to many people. First world problems and all. Even as a woman, I never had those experiences, never really felt looked down at because I am a woman. But maybe you don't get those experiences being shut at home reading.

I feel like books made me meet so many people. I am a big introvert who was actually mostly happy during COVID at home. I have my family and my husband but no other friends to speak of. I think books can really help you understand others and be empathetic. And I have no clue where I am going with this as it's 6:30 in the morning and cat woke me up vomiting at 5:30 so I am too sleepy to think.

message 727: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Marie, welcome to our support BR:))) We mostly just chat and chill here, as well as talk about random books. Lately it has been a ton of LitRPGs ... We have kind of fallen in love with the genre... You are totally welcome to jump in whenever you want:))))

message 728: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 749 comments Thanks, Choko. I am not completely new to LitRPG although before it was more manga experience and this year I read the DCC series and I am eager for more. When my TBR has a space for it that is lol.

message 729: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments I'm so glad to see you here, Marie :D

I'm also a fellow introvert! Other than my brother I see once a week, I basically have one friend, and he doesn't live in the same city :p

Also... You're a manga reader, yay! I watched a lot more anime than read manga, but I've read a LOT of manwhas though

message 730: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 749 comments I used to watch anime more now I just prefer reading manga even though I read it rarely nowadays. Might be because I don't count them in my Goodreads challenge, instead just putting them on unique shelf to mark them read...I feel like my 1900 read volumes would seriously mess up my stats since I have read less books then that. But I count them for the competition so might read more this year lol. I read some manhwas too. Actually my highest rated thing on myanimelist is manhwa.

message 731: by Tonari no Emily (new)

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Welcome Marie :)
I used to watch A LOT of anime, now not so much... Most of my free time is taken up by books and crafts which I can't do while reading subtitles lol

Narilka | 5728 comments Welcome aboard Marie. Virginie and I are working on DDC 2. I'm sure it won't be long before Iain finds something to hook the others on :D We also report back on stuff that's just interesting from time to time without it being a group read.

Basically what Choko said. There's no pressure at all to join whatever the book is. Just chat any time.

message 733: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 749 comments Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. I can't wait for the full spoilers conversation once everyone is done with DCC. I hope we will be blessed with book 7 this year.

Looking forward to adding some more books to my TBR. It's not like I don't already have so many books there I would need 10 lifetime's to read them all 🙃

message 734: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 21220 comments @Virginie--adding my two cents to the well-wishing crowd! Fingers crossed that the domino-chain of pain stops and the dust settles...

Putting in well-wishes for @Emily too--mashed potato brains! Such a great description. I'm also very familiar with the momentum issues dealing with packaging returns... then actually getting them sent...

Really loving the DCC notes @Virginie & Narilka!! Dittoing Emily--getting really excited for the next one.

I also love the Anime comparison--and not just for selective mental editing--one of my friends mostly only reads manga & fanfiction, because he feels like mainstream fiction just isn't as inventive... LitRPGs like DCC have the same level of insane creativity that breaks the box of mainstream publishing... and often make me think of Anime in that regard... love that this led to more conversation into manga & anime... I'm like Emily, I used to read/watch more than I do now, but I'm trying to get back into it some... I'm slower though, 'cuz I insist on reading in Japanese and not translation, and I have trouble processing text with pictures... I just want more text...

And OMG Virginie that clown story!!! And wow family history! And personal history! Thank you for sharing--dittoing everyone in admiration for your mother and family. I love that this group is a safe place for us to share experiences, even painful ones, and I feel like I grow to a better person from listening to y'all.

It's been a real slumpy week for me... lots of excess TV watching, less reading... good thing my BRs have been relatively caught up and light this week, or I'd be way behind... got alot coming up soon, tho... we'll see what happens...

This happens a bit each year, when it gets warmer out...

I've gotta constantly be making progress, because I'm signed up for like 40 BRs/month (my own fault)

I make do, and ride my whims if I have to, plans be damned... just lingering in the back of my mind...

This is also a hectic work week this week... I have to work a 6th day in a row and come in at midnight instead of 4am on Tuesday, for the yearly inventory audit... off Wednesday/Thursday instead of Tuesday/Wednesday... also be a walking-heavy day while still dealing with lingering occasional foot discomfort...

Oh yikes, six day workweek with messy hours... I feel like mentally patting you on the shoulder and saying "ganbatte!" which is like "good luck" and "you can do it" in Japanese but actually means "work harder." Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...
