Alyana | 617 comments I've been thinking if I should sign up for this year because I'm going on vacation on the 2nd and 3rd week of uno and I'm pretty sure my reading will be slow, I don't like to bring my team down. But since I love playing uno, I'll just read what I can to help the team I will be in.

Alyana, maybe just factor that in to the number of books you read in a month in your sign up. That way it won't affect the team you're in. 😊

Shan ~A~ | 96 comments πŸ“• Name: Shan ~ A (really just Shan, added the ~ A after someone with the same name joined a group I was in so everyone could tell us apart)
πŸ“• Team Challenge experience: Tons of experience. They actually really help with my yearly reading goal since I tend to read a bit more than usual while participating in the competitive ones.
πŸ“• Have you joined UNO before? Yes, but I'm not sure when I started. I just know that it's one of the ones I look forward to
πŸ“• Favourite genres: Mainly romance, but I read or will read urban fantasy, mystery/thriller/suspense, bio/memoir, horror, sci-fi, historical, young adult (mainly fantasy)... I guess the one thing I really don't read is Westerns (unless it's a romance set in the west or western themes (cowboy, etc..) ~ this year hoping to branch out into True Crime
πŸ“• Book you can't wait to read in 2024: I've preordered so many that I can't keep them straight, but Karen Marie Moning has a new book coming out later this year The House on Watch Hill (no cover yet) that I'm looking forward to a lot. I've read all of her books (finally finished the Fever series in December after doing a reread throughout 2023) to date. I may start all over again as I have done in the past with The Highlander series. I'm also looking forward to rereading The Rock Chick series by Kristen Ashley at some point this year and the rest of her books that I haven't gotten to yet. I just auto buy them and then get behind.

Other books: Completing the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and her Alpha & Omega series; The Choice by Nora Roberts (several by her actually); Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett; Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (others by her as well) and more

Author's I'm looking forward to reading (either I own several or they're in KU and I didn't read them much or at all in 2023): Kennedy Ryan, Vi Keeland, Dylan Allen, Brittiany C. Cherry, Mia Sheridan, Riley Sager, Devney Perry, Sarina Bowen and the list goes on.

I'm also planning to read more diverse books this year and maybe a little out of my comfort zone to see if I can surprise myself.

I should have just said, Too Many!!!

πŸ“• Favourite genres: adult fiction, fantasy, mystery
πŸ“• Book you can't wait to read in 2024: Mrs Plansky's Revenge, Dictionary of Lost Words, 'Round Midnight, and more!

I forgot to put my name in the AI generator so I got a generic one for the whole challenge - but it's so great I had to share!

In the realm of words, where dreams unfurl,
Where tales are woven, and stories twirl,
There lies a challenge, bold and grand,
The UNO Book Reading Challenge, we understand.

In the year of 2024, amidst the pages' grace,
Seekers of knowledge embark on this noble chase,
From books of vast wisdom, be it fiction or fact,
They immerse their souls, ready to interact.

With the turn of each page, a world blooms anew,
Characters dance, narratives painted in hues,
Imagination soars, as hearts and minds entwine,
Like restless birds, taking flight in each line.

From ancient prose to modern verse,
The UNO Challenge, an invitation to immerse,
Unveiling stories' beauty, in every hidden nook,
Discovery, love, sorrow, redemptionβ€”their very look.

The first book whispers secrets, tales untold,
A path through history, memories unfold,
As ink stains the pages, emotions ignite,
Each chapter caresses, like a candle's gentle light.

The second book, a melody on the wind,
A symphony of words, harmonies within,
It paints a vivid picture, hues of every shade,
Notes dancing on pages, where rhythm is laid.

The third book delves deep, through souls it seeps,
Unveiling the human heart, where passion creeps,
Joy and despair, woven in a masterful hand,
Words like brushstrokes, on life's intricate strand.

As each book unraveled, the challenge complete,
Like a jigsaw puzzle, emotions bittersweet,
For within those pages, moments came alive,
Moments of reflection, as their souls did strive.

In the UNO Challenge, we poets and readers unite,
Bound by the magic of words, love for literature's light,
2024, a year etched in pages, forever we'll hold,
The power of the written word's embrace, bold and bold.

I’m Phoebe, 24 and relatively new to Goodreads and the group.
This will be my first challenge and I’m looking forward to share the experience with other readers (also to tackle my *massive* tbr list).
I enjoy books across a lot of genres… notably speculative fiction, sci fi, Bildungsroman, dystopian, literary realism (basically things with social commentary) - I’ll also read some fantasy from time to time.
Most of my friends don’t read, so I’m looking forward to chat and befriend fellow readers on here :)

Hi Phoebe. None of my local friends read at all. The only people in my life that do happen to be my daughters and a coworker (and my boss' wife). One of my daughters is into romance novels, but she's still in college and doesn't get to read for pleasure as much, plus she doesn't really talk books. My oldest is an eclectic reader, but she and I tend to discuss books all the time even if it's something that the other doesn't necessarily like. My youngest likes YA, but she has to be in the mood, since she has to do a ton of reading for her English class that she's taking in HS. She's getting ready to graduate and then college, so it may be a while before she's in the reading for fun mood again. 🀣

My mom always says she doesn't know where my love of reading comes from, since I'm the only one out of all of her siblings and their kids that loves to read and have done so since I was a kid.

It's been a running joke in my family since I was a kid that if you're looking for me, I'm probably somewhere with some milk and cookies reading a book. πŸ˜‚

That still holds true.

I have quite a few friends who like reading, but none as intensely as I do, so I am endlessly grateful to be able to connect with so many booklovers here on GR. πŸ₯°
(This also makes me mostly overlook the ghastly process on the site GR calls "improvements".)

Just to summarize, almost any book you read will fit a task in Uno, but the team get extra points on color covers that are in the draw of the hand for that month. Not all books need cover colors.

That's the beauty of UNO, you don't have to "keep up". You just read along at your speed - every book helps fill the cards no matter at which speed you read :-)

message 198: by Melindam (new)

Every team will be a mix of readers, slow & fast, but the main thing is that you read books you love and may find new ones through recommendations. :)
