I'm new here. My names Maggie. I've been a big reader for a really long time now, but I wanted to join a book club to get some sense of community and get to chat about books. And a mental health book club is perfect!
I'm a psychology student at Binghamton University in New York and I'm hoping to be a therapist someday. I am four years in recovery from anorexia and bulimia and I have experience with major depression and social anxiety as well.
I'm excited to get to know y'all. :)

Hi Maggie.
You are a brave soul to have embarked on this journey. Wishing you the best!

I'm a psychotherapist and author of psychology books and science fiction. I'm hoping to learn from those here--how they experience life and cope with it--and hopefully make contributions of my own. I'm hoping to find a place where I can be part of the community.

I'm an avid reader, and I like to find books that can either help me understand what's going on with me, or books with authors that I can identify with in their struggle. I'm not a big fan of books that sensationalize mental illness though, a la "13 Reasons Why." I just feel like that's taking advantage of a community of people to make a fortune.
I'm excited to see what the group will be reading and will try to stay involved, though my own TBR pile is as tall as me now and I might struggle to catch up sometimes!

I think the tbr pile is soon to be my bogey monster :)"
Hahaha, thank you! I think my pile will become that too!

I'm Nick. I have suffered mental ill health for over thirty years, and have recently been diagnosed with BPD, OCD and complex PSTD.
I want to raise awareness, and in doing so wrote an autobiographical novel about my experiences: DEADWEIGHT: An autobiographical novel about Borderline Personality Disorder. I remain unsure if it will help share awareness about mental health in the UK or abroad.
Other than that I blog about the environment and mental health on my website.
I'm looking forward to joining the discussions.

I am an author and an eating disorder recoverer. After writing a book about my story (under a pen name for professional reasons) I started the Wine and Cheese Diet (the word “diet” being a pun) blog as a way to continue writing on the topic and helping others. It was such a life changing transition for me to go from sick back to healthy and I’m inspired to help others.
My boyfriend and I travel a lot and I work remotely as a writer and marketing consultant. Oh and I love to eat and drink, obviously. Wine and cheese, preferably. Ha!
I'm excited to be part of the group and look forward to diving into the books and discussions.

I’m a 36 year old mom and wife who loves all thing psychology. My son has ADHD and sensory issues. I battle anxiety and my own sensory issues, along with some trauma from toxic people (narcissists and what not). I’m doing fine now but all this opened a whole world of interest in mental health and loads of empathy for others with issues people struggle with. I also have a weird fascination with the minds of those that are sociopaths...I watch way too much of the investigation discovery channel lol.
Looking forward to reading with you all

Aloha and Welcome Stormy Sky! Mahalo for sharing! We all have other vices and besides I see nothing wrong with that. Do you read true crime and if so do have a favorite author of true crime?

I'm Alice. I am the daughter of a mentally ill mom. I recently wrote a book, Crazy Was All I Ever Knew: The Impact of Maternal Mental Illness on Kids. It's a blend of memoir and research. I’ve interspersed episodes of my life with research on the risks faced by children of mentally ill moms, the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in general, and the science of resilience.
The book carries a resounding message of hope: resilience can be built at any age.
Research shows that between 25-50% of children of parents with mental illness will experience some level of psychiatric disorder in their lifetimes. I was anorexic as a teen. I have suffered with chronic anxiety.
For adults with unresolved trauma, I've learned there are pathways to leading healthy, productive lives. For adults, mental health experts say, the key is learning to forgive—yourself. As one psychiatrist told me, “You have to be able to say, ‘It’s not my fault.’”
I'm still working on that.
My book examines the stigma of mental illness. Many children of mentally ill parents feel "invisible." I certainly felt that way as a kid.
I've learned about the interrelated nature of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). I suffered multiple ACEs.
I am wondering if anyone else would like to share their experiences of growing up with a mentally ill parent.

I’ve been reading a lot of Augusten Burroughs lately. I know it’s not straight up MH, but that’s usually where addictions come from and most of books are based around his lifelong struggle with addiction. Even though I don’t personally have experience with addiction, It’s refreshing to read from the point of view of someone who knows he’s a mess but still has a great sense of humor and meets goals he sets.
