Ron Yeah, Luis, I saw your post. It must be challenging having several mental illnesses within your own family.

In terms of my parents and my sibling, I'm the only one. My mom's aunt (my great-aunt) was schizophrenic and I know my dad's mom (my grandma), suffered from severe depression.

If I understand correctly, there's a high chance of a relative with schizophrenia who can end up having bipolar disorder and that MI's can skip a generation (hence my parents not getting them). And that it can jump between siblings (hence my sibling not getting them.)

I was told an uncle was bipolar but there's no direct clarification on that so I can't be 100% sure.

Still, though, I often wonder how I ended up with the disorder, specifically the BD.

Kenneth Nixon (kennethnixon) | 1 comments Good Evening Everyone,

I am Kenneth Nixon Jr. I am new to the platform and getting comfortable navigating these types of communal spaces. I will be a debut author on May 2nd, 2023, with my first book, a memoir titled "Born Into Crisis." I use my personal stories (born to a mother with severe mental illness) to highlight the environmental, social, and generational traumas that keep black Americans trapped in generational cycles. I also focus on a call to action on how we can transform the behavioral health system in the U.S.

I am excited to share this space and have great conversations with other avid readers & writers.

I believe mania is harder on people around us and fun for the manic itself. Kind of like toddler hyperactivity. At certain point it gets scary. Its okay to miss it, all feelings are valid. Just know that manic state can get dangerous and you might regret the outcomes.

If you are unsure abut trampolines, i would first try to find a place where the child could test it before purchasing trampoline. Maybe your neighbor or friend has one and agrees to let you use it for an hour? Maybe some playground or playhouse has it?

Hi there,

Even though i have been an avid reader my whole life - both fiction and non-fiction, I have always read the old fashioned way. I love to browse bookshops and have only ever read paperbacks. So, I found my way to Goodreads primarily as an author, but thought I'd check in here and say hi to some kindred spirits. I have suffered with cptsd for my whole life. It manifested mainly as acute social anxiety with depressive features. I developed this condition as a result of being raised by a narcissistic mother. She is NPD but undiagnosed. Recovery is a painful and somewhat lonely journey so I'm grateful for this space. Thank you!

message 619: by Danisha (new)

Danisha (qt_neesha) | 1 comments Hi my name is Danisha, I'm 22 years and currently living in Belgium to complete my degree. I've been on Goodreads for a while but went on a massive break when my mental health took a turn last year. Now I'm back and decided to join this group to keep myself social and to try and find old passions again, reading in particular, and meet people like me (those that struggle with depression, anxiety, and d*rk thoughts). I hope to find a reading buddy and if not, that's okay too :) i have a lot of free time now that I am unable to attend uni, but let's hope that doesn't last forever so I can finish my degree. I'm not quite sure what I'm suppose to say in this intro, but I hope this is enough because I don't know what else to say haha.

Lorie Bond | 2 comments Hi my name is Lorie Bond Saadipour, and I've recently written a personal memoir, THE VOICES WE COULDN'T HEAR, a story of my mother who suffered from debilitating paranoid schizophrenia. I fiercely guarded this dark secret until my mother passed away in 2020. That's when I decided to write our story. I felt compelled to be her voice, her justice and to redeem myself from the past.

Hi Jeff - You sound very accomplished, with a full schedule and more. I will put Lost Connections on my list to read. Most people think they can fight depression alone. But if unchecked it can create unintended consequences. Thank you for sharing.

message 630: by Jenyfer L Johnson (new)

Jenyfer L Johnson | 1 comments Hello! Glad to find this group. I'm 61, widowed, retired and female. I've been diagnosed with GAD and Panic Disorder for many years now, but the last few years have been pretty rough. My husband retired in 2018 and was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (brain cancer) a month later, dying in mid-2019. Just as I was starting to get back on my feet, my Stepdad was told his Pancreatic Cancer returned and was terminal. My passive-aggressive Mom basically drank herself into dementia and was in the hospital when he died. So, being the only girl and the oldest of 4, I took over taking care of his estate, her finances and care. All this on top of dealing with my own Type 2 Diabetes and Psoriatic Arthritis, as well as health maintenance from my Breast Cancer in 2009. All this has led me back to therapy, an additional medication and a new diagnosis of OCD tendencies and PTSD. But therapy is helping, and every day is another chance.

Ella Shae | 1 comments Good morning! I am a new member to good reads and a new author who advocates for eliminating the stigma on mental health, teaching children emotional health and speaking at community events on the importance of a support system. I would love to help in this group any way I can. My new book, From Broken to Beautifully Broken takes you on a journey through all of my life’s struggles with my mental health and how I was able to find the beauty in my brokenness. Love and light

message 632: by Simon (new)

Simon Harper | 8 comments Hi Karlotta. Sorry to hear you are struggling. It can seem overwhelming when we are hit with big emotions and negative thoughts. Have you found anyone to talk to? It's always worse if you keep everything locked inside. No idea what country you live in, but in the United Kingdom Samaritans is a great service to help people talk about how they are feeling. Maybe your school has access to counsellors/psychotherapists? There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck in finding it. All the best Simon

I'm Nova (they/ey/it), and I'm 15.
I struggle with anxiety, depression, bulimia, self-harm, and suspected bipolar 2.

I absolutely adore reading and its gotten me through some pretty bad times.

message 634: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie | 10 comments Hi! I'm Stefanie. I have struggled with anxiety, depression, OCD and an eating disorder.

I was a book junkie when I was younger, then went to school for Psychology as my dream was to work in the mental health field. Busy with school, raising a son, and working full time I forgot my love for reading. Anyway, since I had personal experience with mental health struggles, I wanted to help others struggling so they don't feel alone. Finally graduated and found my love for reading again. Discovered that in order for me to stay in recovery I needed to stay busy so I started writing a book. (I am)

I am a mother of one, a cat owner of two and a die heard swiftie :)

message 635: by Marlene (new)

Marlene Dunham | 6 comments Welcome Stephanie. I am sorry you are struggling. Writing is a great way to cope - what is your book about? I just wrote a book about my family's mental illnesses. It's a great way of release.

message 636: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie | 10 comments Hi Marlene!

Sorry for the confusion, I am in recovery now! My book is about my struggle with an eating disorder, with glimpses of what it is like to have an eating disordered voice in your head. I used journal entries when I was in treatment and when I returned home from treatment to capture the thoughts during that time!

Is your book nonfiction or is it more of a biography type?

message 637: by Marlene (new)

Marlene Dunham | 6 comments It's a Memoir.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...?
Family members had Bi-Polar, Schizophrenia and Severe Mental Disability.
I also have a daughter who battled anorexia for years - but that is not in the book. Good luck to you. Let me know when you finish the book.

Christopher Malmevik | 1 comments Hey everyone. I’ve been diagnosed, and being treated, for bipolar disorder unspecified, general anxiety disorder and ADHD. I am also an alcoholic (4 years sober in March) and addict (105 days sober today) that has been in recovery where I read, or watch shows and movies, and then journal about my experiences. I look forward to meeting new people and learning about books and authors I would otherwise not find. I’m glad to find a group where I can not only discuss my condition but learn and grow from others.

Oh and I’m also a diehard Swiftie. :-)

I've always struggled with mental health through an eating disorder, anxiety and depression but I'm doing a lot better. I love reading, music, scrapbooking and makeup! I like all things related to mental health and I wish to work in the mental health field when I'm older.

message 642: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Ashley and I love memoirs that have some humor attached. I’m known for my raw but inviting essays. I try to capture the intricacies of my everyday life while living with a flood of mental illnesses. I openly share my intimate journals from psychiatric stays, moments trying to find the sunlight, and the callous feeling of not wanting to be here anymore. Peeing in foam cups and ruminating for hours about catching pedophilia is just a tiny glimpse into my sometimes-manic life. I share my stories in a very direct way that will only make you feel more compassionate to those who are touched by this light. I wrote Separate Things: A Memoir, to help others like myself, allowing empathy to flow through my words. Find me on Facebook (facebook.com/separatethingsmemoir) and Instagram (@separate_things_memoir). Separate Things: A Memoir

Judy Kowalsky (httpsamazoncomauthorjudykowalsky) Hi I am Judy Kowalsky, I am an adult daughter of an alcoholic father and a passive, co-dependent mother who also bore traits of a covert narcissist. Although undiagnosed both of my parents had traits of personality disorders and as a result of the environment I experienced growing up in I have acquired many of the universal traits where those with alcohol use disorder and personality disorders collide. I write about my experiences in my book, The Art of Bristle, A Memoir. I am looking forward to being a part of your group, exploring and discussing encouraging, helpful, and informative books while continuing on in this ongoing journey of healing.

Alpein Cameo | 13 comments I hope the sick hear me quickly. I wrote a Book that defines personality completely. - Flawless Things- I also described the cause and treatment of psychiatric diseases. Normally, I had left this definition aside to include it in my second book. But since it will be too late, I decided to add it to my current book. Anyway, book work can take a long time. I want patients who want to get better faster to get simple and useful medicine advice from me.

message 648: by Alpein (new)

Alpein Cameo | 13 comments Katherine
There is no disease called OCD. Nervous weakness is a single disease due to its occurrence. Today it's OCD, tomorrow it's something else. Or, one person has OCD and another person has a different disease. The reason why the disease symptoms are so variable is not because the cause of each disease is different, but because the body consistencies are different.

message 649: by Alpein (new)

Alpein Cameo | 13 comments Noah
Eating disorders are bad things that exist, but there is no disease called "eating disorder". Let's admit that it exists, the field of treatment is not psychiatric medicine. Having a psychiatric illness, especially before the age of 17, must be a very special situation. I think we should message. It is very easy for me to find solutions with simple and useful medicines.
