Welcome, Aly! You seem really like a true survivor. I hope you can read some books with us and tell if representation is correct!
Hello All! My name is Anna, I am 27yrs old and I am hoping to learn more about Autism, Aspergers and the spectrum in general. My boyfriend (now 25yrs old) was diagnosed at a very young age and was non-verbal for most of his childhood. He and I are both learning new things as he has never really explored what it means to have Autism due to severe bullying as a kid. I am excited that April is Autism month! I have a few books on my list, but I am definitely hoping for more recommendations and stuff that 50yr old women haven't written.

Hi everyone! I'm Andrea. I've been obsessed with mental health for the past couple of decades (basically ever since my brother was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder). I myself am struggling with depression/anxiety and am always looking for knowledge on the subject. I recently got married. I love dogs, Disney (because it drags me away from being depressed), and art. Glad I found the this group. It's right up my alley. Happy reading!
Welcome, Andrea! Our bookshelf has many books on schizophrenia

Hello, I'm Emily. I've been using Goodreads for years but recently deleted everything from my shelves for a fresh start. I want to start using Goodreads more and reading more (although I've always been a bookworm), so I thought joining a group or two would be nice. I really only have one real-life friend and spend most of high school doing online school through K12, so I'm quite socially isolated as well. Mental health is important to me, so it's a bonus for me if a book deals with those kinds of issues.I'm 18 years old and I just graduated high school. In the fall I'll be starting at my local community college studying social work and hopefully continuing my education after that at a university. I live in Northeast Ohio. I'm pretty sure I'm asexual and am unsure of my romantic inclinations. I have six cats (I know, it's a little out of control) that I love more than anything else in the whole world combined. I used to only read YA and manga, but I've been getting into the classics latelyand have been pushing myself to read more nonfiction, especially involving history and philosophy. I'm long-winded and tend to be academically-inclined if it wasn't obvious.
I was diagnosed with depression a few years ago and as autistic just at the start of this year. Depression and anxiety are sort of intertwined with autism for me. I've made a lot of progress with medication and counseling over the last few years, but I still struggle in some areas.

Greetings MH Bookclub,I just joined Goodreads and this group.
To briefly introduce myself, I fell into what became a 2.5-year depression nearly twenty-three years ago. I had had a difficult childhood; the depression started my healing process. On the suggestion of two very good friends, I went to a psychologist, which was luckily a very good experience.
Although my depression is history, my healing process is ongoing. It includes issues relating to my self-worth, which stem from being a victim of domestic violence and being the black sheep of my family. Twenty-two years ago, I nearly jumped from a six-story building.
I detail more about my journey of survival and healing process in my new book "Finding Your Safety Net: Do Having Faith, Being Baptized, and Taking Communion Have Value?", which I've already added to this group's bookshelf (see the Author's Corner for more info). Yes, I wrote my book to help others survive similar experiences.
Anyway, I look forward to the healthy, encouraging, and inspiring discussions of this group.
With Regards,
Glen
Hey everyone! My name is Mike, and I'm an author and coach from Marin County, California. I've spent the majority of my life trying to understand my own mental health, and how it both affects and is affected by the world around me. After studying psychology, social dynamics, neuroscience, Hakomi, meditation, martial arts, shamanism, body talk, herbalism, and animal tracking, I compiled what I found most valuable from each method and established my own practice. These tools and experiences were the foundation for my debut book, Suicidal to Superhuman: Accepting Mental Health & Its Role in Global Sanity, which will be released on September 10th (World Suicide Prevention Day). My goal is to shift the stigmas around mental illness, and help people understand how these “disorders” can serve as a catalyst to connecting with their complete, authentic selves—empowering them with the courage to truly live. I also host a range of workshops and events virtually, and have a free one coming on September 8th if anyone would like to join. https://www.mikedayem.com/events/crac...I look forward to connecting with you all.

Hello everyone. I joined this group a few years ago. I'm a novelist living well while managing anxiety and bipolar 2. I think I forgot to introduce myself here, so I'm doing it now.I have published 5 fictionalized memoirs and one young adult book. I'm self-published. If you're interested in mental health fiction, you may enjoy my website, too. http://www.duncanwritesbooks.com
I want to thank the moderators for being so consistent with the monthly polls. I get emailed like clockwork every month. I'm a bit shy and still learning how to navigate social media like a non-cretin. There are unwritten rules everywhere and I'm still figuring it out.
I am taking a workshop in Author Branding. One of the assignments is a survey of readers of my genre. This group is the ideal place for me to offer the survey. I doubt I should do it in the 'Introduce Yourself" thread. I'll dig around and see where best to post the link to the survey. If anyone knows where to post it, let me know.
With Gratitude,
Duncan

Hi. My name is Jeff Zuckerman. I live in Minnesota (USA). My wife of 36 years lives with late-onset bipolar disorder. I thank my lucky starts she's been stable for more than year. I facilitate a NAMI support group for spouses and partners of those with a mental illness. I found only one memoir focuses on a spouse, Mark Lukach's excellent "My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward." But Mark wrote a lot more about his lovely wife than about what he went through--so I wrote and published my own memoir, "Unglued: A Bipolar Love Story" (Boyle & Dalton). Details at jeffzuckerman.com. It has received great reviews on GoodReads and Amazon. I hope caregivers and those with an illness will consider reading it, and I look forward to reading other stories and books here.
HiWe are Mental-Health Trust.
We are planning to host a mental-health book club via zoom for the month of November.
We would like to know if you'll could help us out with recommending some books that are not too heavy but lightweight, for starters.
Please no Spam!
Thank you so much & have a wonderful day everyone.
Jo,

Hi. Ellen Forney's graphic memoir "Marbles: Mania, Depression, Marbles, and Me" captured it all for me with such terrific drawings and self-deprecation that it never got too heavy. Nora McInerny's "It's Okay to Laugh" isn't exactly not heavy--it's about grief and healing--but she's got a light touch. You can read the reviews of "Unglued: A Bipolar Love Story" on GoodReads and Amazon and decide if the heavy parts are too heavy. A lot of readers have told me they're laughing one minute and then crying. But (spoiler alert) it's got the happiest ending I could have hoped for.
Hi everyone, I’m Denny. I struggle with OCD, depression and anxiety. I’m glad I just found this group. :) Books are my escape - they have helped me time and again to come back from a bad episode.

Hi, I'm Aly. I'm 15... I'm a freshman in high school and an aspiring nurse. I enjoy cosplaying, watching anime, and writing stories. I currently have many mental illnesses of my own.
A little background of my mental health
In 2011 I was diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, and ODD. People thought I was a problematic child, turns out it was these illnesses.
In 2019 I was diagnosed with MDD and GAD. These were the toughest moments of my life... so far... and I had attempted to commit suicide once. I also had began to self-harm.
In July 2019 I was faced with a traumatic sexual assault that ruined my whole life. I was silenced... and scared for my life... I just now have began to tell people about my trauma.
Also in July I had overdosed and spent a few days in ICU in critical condition.
So now, I have been diagnosed with PTSD and it is my biggest struggle to this day. I see many therapists and a psychiatrist. Although I don't feel like it helps. I still go. I just feel like they try to distract me from my problems instead of letting me talk about it and face it head-on.
I've been to two psychiatric hospitals and dealt with so much at a young age, I don't know how, but I'm proud of how strong I am with this!
Anyway, I hope everyone is staying safe and practicing social-distancing. (I've never had a problem due to being anti-social)
