The book of “Genesis” is a short story (debatably), which is written in a third person narrative. God initially appears to be a flat character. This is because his character seems to be consistently good, not undergoing change. However, as the story progresses God appears to be a round character due to reactions seen when man commits disobedient and terrible acts. The story begins with the creation of the earth. During this period, in Genesis 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, and 25 we see a phrase repeated: “It was good”. In verse 31 after all creation has taken place we read: “It was very good”. These phrases show that God was pleased with the work he had completed. As the earth is being created and changing, it seems that God’s character is undergoing change. This can be seen in Genesis 2:4, after resting and blessing the seventh day, “God” becomes “LORD God”. In chapter 4 the name changes yet again to “LORD”, which seems less personal than the previous name. Because chapter 4 begins directly after Adam and Eve are expelled from the Garden of Eden, it makes the reader wonder if this lack of personalization is intentional. We can see various facets of the character throughout the story. The frustration displayed by God is evident in the statements in Genesis 3:11 when he addresses Adam and Eve after eating the off-limits fruit: “Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?” After everything had previously been described as “good”, this was definitely new territory. Later in Genesis 6:7 God displays regret for his creation when he says: “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them”. With the exception of Noah and his family, God did wipe the earth clean with the great flood. After the flood God makes a promise to himself in Genesis 8:22, saying: “I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done”. God then blessed Noah and his family. Many generations later at the Tower of Babel, following a path similar to Adam and Eve, men once again attempt to aspire to Godliness. Holding to His promise, God does not destroy mankind but confuses their language and scatters them about the earth. We can see that God is a round character that undergoes various changes throughout the book of “Genesis”.

God is seen as a righteous God and unsurpassed force as he created the world detail by detail.When I read Genesis my mind started to load with inquiries and considerations as I read the initial eleven sections of the Bible. It never stops to fill me each time I read it over and over again. Various interesting things jumped out at me this time through. The way that the Tigris and Euphrates have really been on earth since Adam was put in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:14) astonish me. The listing of the descendants of Adam (Genesis 5) permitted me to acknowledge that Noah was just nine eras from Adam. I found in one of my reference books that Noah's dad, Lamech, was just fifty-six years of age at the time of Adam's demise. Then again, in the meantime, this data was a touch of disillusioning. Did the entire earth truly load with defilement and roughness in only nine eras? This served as a distinct indication of the sort of world we are naturally introduced to. Indeed along these lines, God sends trust into these Bible sections with Noah's existence. As should be known, the first illustrations of each of the Deadly Sins are present in Genesis. From the earliest starting point, we read about Lust in the story of Adam and Eve and wind up with a tale about Envy in Joseph and his siblings. Today, cutting edge individuals need to make there mind up if they follow good or evil much the same as the times of Adam and Eve.
I liked reading Genesis for my very first time; it is nice to read how God’s creations begin. Chapters 1-11 characterized God as a flat character, however has an outcome to being a round character in this short story. In the beginning of the story it states 1:1 how “God created the heaven and the earth” throughout chapter 1 God continuously states “it was good”. In the first chapter it was mainly how God worked on his creation in this world for six days 1:31. On the seventh day God ended all his work and rested 2:2 After Gods creation his name changes to “LORD” which states on 2:4. God created a man, which was Adam, but God thought maybe a woman is needed for Adam 2:22. On 2:23, “Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Adam named his wife Eve “he said she was the mother of all living”4:20. God is described as caring and trustworthy to Adam and Eve 4:21 “LORD God makes coats of skins, and clothed them” However on line 3:11, and 3:12 it proves how Adam and Eve begin to disobey the LORD God and on how he ordered to keep away from the fruit “Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?” Later in chapter six 6:4, 5, 6, 7, the LORD God appears to be regretting his generous creation and his trust on the man and women Adam and Eve 6:5 “God saw wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” 6:13 “And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” God decided to smear off the earth by creating a large flood that kills everybody except Noah and his family.

I did enjoy reading this section of the bible and this is my personal opinion after reading Genesis chapters 1-11 for the first time, I must say that God was not portrayed in a very favorable light. I want to reiterate that this is MY opinion before I continue, as I was reading I kept getting flash backs to News headlines where Andrea Yates drowns her five children. God seems like a parent who is proud of their children when the children do good but when the children do something against His wishes then he punishes them extensively. After so much disobedience from his children God decides to "cleanse" the earth by sending a massive flood that will wipe out everyone on earth. What this means is that He will kill every man, woman, and CHILD on earth no matter of their innocence's just to "cleanse" the earth of what He doesn't like. In my opinion this sounds just like what mothers who murder their children say, some say that their child was possessed, other claim that their children were not pure or good and that the reason that they murdered their kids. Genesis portrays God as a being that basically throws temper tantrums when His children do not listen. To me Genesis does not do justice to the God that I know and love whom is good all the time and does not throw temper tantrums.

The first eleven chapters I would characterize God to this person who created earth. In the beginning God created the heaven and earth. God said, let there be light: and there was light. God then created man and from his ribs he created women. And the Lord God cause a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs , and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. Then Eve ate from the forbidden tree and gave to Adam, whom God told them not to eat and they disobeyed him. Then God punished them both Adam had to work all his life and women should bare children with pain for this there would always be evil in life for what they had done. Men and women also lived for hundreds years or more this also let to the growth of human kind. I guess that is why God gave life and death to all that disobeyed him.
In the first ten chapters of the book of Genesis I see God as a powerful being that gives his creation very much freedom and power to do anything at all, but also applying harsh punishments when He needs to. In the book He seems an all powerful being that takes pride on what he creates but also expect human being to not sin. Whenever the human being sin and falls out of place punishment is due. Then later after punishment ends he show sings oh Him changing His mind and bless the human beings again. With this said, it seems like God sees the world in a total different way that human beings. He treats His creations that should be spoiled but at the same time if things start getting out of hand, he places a stop on it immediately. The books is broken on various main sections. The creation, the fall of Adam and Eve, the Cain and Abel murder, and Noah’s ark, it gives us a great amount of information which shows us and foreshadows what we can expect from God in the rest of the old test

I would characterize God as a very specific being; He does what he wants and he does it right. Though in the beginning, he may seem as a flat character for doing what he wants and getting what he wants. However, in the end, he is a round/dynamic character because of his many attributes. In the Creation of earth, we can see how powerful and giving he is: “2 and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.” In chapter 2 He “7took some soil from the ground and formed man out of it. … 17 “it is not good for man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to him.” God loves these humans so much that he doesn’t want them to eat of the forbidden tree because if they do “[they] will die the same day.” Now here many may characterize him as mean, controlling and maybe complicated; the thing is that God wanted to be with them always, unfortunately the moment they disobeyed him they had fallen and can never face each other again. The Lord is compassionate as well, he did not harm Cain after he had killed his brother Abel, he even put a mark on him so that nobody could kill him – and of course that is also punishment so that he has to live with guilt and remorse for killing his own brother. The Lord is also regretful, as shown in the flood. He felt sad, remorseful and hated the way humans had become. But can also be just and appreciates those who makes him proud like Noah and his family. He saved them and gave him everything he needed to save himself and his family.
I consider God as a flat character at the begging of the chapter because everything was how he wanted to be, but through the chapters his characterization changed to be round because God reacts in a different way when he knows man committed disobedience. The chapters begins explaining the creation of earth where I can see God as all powerful creator of everything where in chapter 2 it states that " god took soil from the ground and and created a man" which clearly established how powerful he is, but after he also created a woman for a man not to be alone God said " god loves these humans so much that he does not want them to eat of the forbidden tree because if they do will die the same day" showing God as cruel but the reality is that he gave men the capacity to decide if they wanted to take the wrong way or no and because of their decisions God could be decide how punish humans.

I would characterize God in two different ways but with the same meaning or same result, first as the mentor who created Adan and Eve and try to guided them in a life of happiness but due to "indiscipline" they were expelled from the beautiful garden that God created for them. Then I would characterize God as a hero who destroy every spoil human being from the face of the earth to give the good hearted people a fresh beginning away from the life of sin. But after this "new" beginning he promise not to mess with the problems of the earth again and left to all humans the responsibility of maintain a peaceful and valuable life with love and kidneys to others.

I would characterize God in these first 11 chapters of Genesis as a round character because he changes throughout these chapters. In the first chapter he is a creator very dedicated and detailed in his creations and when he sees “It was good,” continues until all is made. He shows love to his creations providing all the needs but of course establishing rules to follow. These rules are set not as a dictator but more of Father who wishes the best upon his. Like a Father punishments are acquired for disobedience of those rules and although they seem harsh, in these punishments we see his almighty power. In Genesis 6:5 “GOD saw wickedness of man was great in earth,” and continues in Genesis 6:6 “it grieved him at his heart.” This was an emotional part of the reading for me for I felt for God. Here he shows emotion like any other would when they have troubled children, he became very real to me. He is sad and as a Father again has a harsh punishment. God loves and can be characterized as a protector but also shows there are consequences of not abiding by His ordinances. The main reason these were established was to maintain a close relationship and guidance with human beings. Although his punishments for those who disobeyed him may seem extreme characterizing him as evil, I would see it as providing tough love.
Having read the first eleven chapters of Genesis from the Bible leaves the reader spellbound with just the first chapter alone in the creation of the universe. God is the protagonist. The fact that God spoke the universe into being, taking six days to create and resting on the seventh day, shows the power behind the words being breathed out of God’s mouth. Now, to answer the question in how I would characterize God in the first eleven chapters using the elements of characterization from the Google slides on Fiction has me struggling for Godly wisdom in how to answer. America was birthed using God’s Word in establishing life under God’s law. The Bible is a book that has withstood the hands of time. When God said “Let US make man in OUR image”; there were others God was consulting with, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. If this book was a book of fictional stories, then God would be a flat character. A flat character is one that is not complicated and does not change. Except that there is a moment when it seems that God regrets the life people have chosen to walk in having become a violent nation. “And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the Earth is filled with violence through them; and behold I will destroy them with the Earth.” I am so glad I am not God or have His powers, because in today’s world there is even more violence than that era, and I would certainly rain down fire on those misfits. I abhor violence against infants and children. The fact that a grown man would rape a baby of nine months while the mother watches the boyfriend commit this atrocity (McAllen) must certainly leave God in tears and have his regrets even if there is a special place waiting for these individuals.
In the book of "Genesis" God created the heaven and the earth, and it was good. Most of the first chapters God can be characterized as a flat character since his actions are only base in one way of thinking, and by repeating the same dialogue, "and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it" Moreover, it is until Cain slaughtered Abel that we discover that God is able of punishing his own creation by seen corruption on them, "And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him" By seen this twist of the wrath of God onto Cain, we can see that God becomes more of a round character.

In would Characterize God in the first eleven chapters of the book of the bible; stated that God it the creator of the world and mankind. The God had simple rule for Adam and Eve to follow. God is said to be a vengeful God, when not being honored. God is a loving to all creatures. God had consideration to give the right of free will. Unfortunately, mankind fail to listen to God. Mankind had to understand the serious circumstances of the disobedience. God did redirect mankind and gave them a second chance. And left mankind to redeem themselves. All God wanted for mankind to bond and have close relationship. God shows different types of love toward mankind, even though mostly some of his creations that follow or strain away.

Well, for starters, the Book of Genesis is, in literal aspect, a short story (a narration if you will). As for God, throughout the first 11 chapters goes through a sort of transformation. In the beginning, God would be dubbed a flat character. His manner of actions and tone does not change and stays constant throughout the first chapters of Genesis: "And God saw the light; that it was good...And god saw that it was good...it was very good" (1: 4, 12, 31 KJV) As we move on to the upcoming chapters, we see a shift of character from God being a flat character to a round character. We see this change when Adam and Eve are cast out of the garden of Eden for eating of the forbidden fruit. "Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken...So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life" (3: 23 - 24 KJV) Here we see the addition of the word 'Lord' in the story. Did the author purposely do this in order to show the transformation of God? In many ways, I believe so. Another example of this can be seen in chapter 6 of the Book of Genesis: "And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it it repenteth me that I have made them." (6:7 KJV) Notice instead of using 'God' it has become 'Lord'. This only goes to show how God as a flat character, transformed into a round character.
After reading the book of "Genesis" I can characterize God as being a dynamic character. A dynamic character changes over time, and in the story we see how God changed because of the way humans were acting. In the beginning of the story God creates the earth and all the animals and Adam and Eve. He is nice and provides everything that is necessary for their survival such as water and vegetations. After Adam and eve eat the forbidden fruit; God expels them from Eden and now they were left on their own to work for their survival. By this point we see how God changed from being that nice character to a more strict on due to the disobedience of Adam and Eve. After, we see how God orders Noah to build an Ark because he plans to get rid of all living things due to the evil that has taken over the world. In the story God went from being a nice character to a character that regrets ever creating life on the planet Earth and destroying what he had created and just saving the pure so they could reproduce again.
When I read the book of Genesis, I initially thought of God to be a flat character. In chapter 1, His character not only seemed consistent in His thought but in His mood as well. He was pleased in His creations. In chapter 2, we start to see God change. We see compassion in God towards Adam in Geneis 2:18 "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." In chapter 3 we see the fall of man and start to see God as more of a round character. In chapters 6 through 8 we see God become upset with the people of the land and Him becoming more of a dynamic character as He cleanses the earth sparing Noah and his family and then later in Babylon God changes the language of the Babylonian people to cause confusion due the Tower of Babel. Over all in the selections we read in Genesis, we see God's character develop from being a flat character to a round character and eventually into a dynamic character.

For sure I can say that throughout the eleven chapters that I read, God for sure can't be seen as a flat character. I personally feel like God changes in every chapter. I would say that God can defientely been seen as a dynamic character. A dynamic character is someone who goes through change throughout the story. We can say that God goes through a sort of transformation throughout the story. At the beginning of the story they describe to us how God creates the Earth, such as the water, the animals, the air, Adam & Eve. God keeps repeating the same words throughout the first few chapter, "and it was good". For some reason this is being related so I would say that this is important. We can see a major change in God when Adam and Eve disobey him by eating from the tree that he told them not too. After he found this out he made both Adam and Eve work for their survival. So I would say God does go through a change throughout the story. He never stays the same.

The first chapter's were very intresting I coulp picture everything how beautiful God's creation were. God can be seen as a flat creation in the beginning he is seen as a flat character who's creations were all great but later in the chapter's we see how God actually changes so he can be interpreted as a dynamic character.

As you pointed out, he cares for Adam and Eve, giving them everything they need. Conversely, after mankind repeatedly sins God destroys everyone except for the one family that remained faithful to him. Even though the change in actions may have been a reaction to mankind, this shows how God can be identified as a round character in Genesis 1-11.

Elizabeth, I like the perspective you took regarding God’s actions. You indicated that he could be identified as a parent, instead of a dictator. This can be seen from the way he provided for Adam and Eve, ensuring they had everything they needed. Punishment was carried out when they were ousted from the Garden of Eden, also similar to a parent. With Genesis being written in this manner it seems many people can identify with God’s actions and motives.

Elizabeth, I agree with your point of view on your response on Genesis and how God played a role of a round character. God did his greatest on creating in just six days, until Adam and Eve disobeyed God. You mentioned how everything was good, because of Gods creations. You noticed how GOD changed and became LORD on 2:4. However like you mentioned “God displays regret for his creation when he says: “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them”.

I didn't note the change in names referred to when spoken of God. This change is another way we see God's character change from flat to round.

The examples you provide of the reading allow us to see the consequences of the disobedience.

God created Adam and Eve but he also punishes them for eating from the forbidden tree. This causes God to punish all human kind.

I am still confused how they lived so long.

I appreciate that you were able to see how powerful and magnificent God was on these chapters about the Genesis. I agree with you, God may be seen as a cruel and punisher, but it is true, he gave man the capacity to decide what is good and bad.

I do agree with you, I also think that this part is the moment when he change to a round character; “And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the Earth is filled with violence through them; and behold I will destroy them with the Earth.” Also, when I was reading your last sentence, I felt too much anger just to image that little and defenseless creature of God suffer in consequence of that people. It is unacceptable.

I think you mentioned a good point when you said god whatever he wanted he did and how powerful he was and how he created man and woman, basically god had control over everything.

I agree when you said that god at the beginning was a flat character but then changed to a round character and how God created earth and demonstrated love to his creations in this case man in general but also how he punished them because they disobey his orders.

Monica I can totally agree with you when you say that God can be seen as a dynamic character. Major things happen that make God change his way of being like for example when you stated the disobedience of Adam and Eve. To be honest I don't remember God regretting what he had created at the beginning.
Mary Jane I can totally agree with you when you see that God can definitely not be seen as a flat character. He does evolve within time. I like how you are very specific with what chapters he changes in and how. I can also agree with you with the events that took place that made God changed his way of being.
Amalia most definitely Gods words are very powerful and very strong. The first two chapters I do agree that we see how us people and the earth were created by God himself. I agree with you Senaida Genesis focuses on the creation of the earth from the beginning and although theirs alot of interpretations of the Genesis,we can see that the first creative act of God.

I do think that the creation was the way it says in the books but based that in the fact that God is an all present God and the concept of time does not affect him countless years may have been passing between each day in the creation. I agree with you when you say there was a transformation of God from the first chapters to the next. God was flat character by always saying that everything was 'well and good' (1: 31 KJV) and then He changed character to a round character when he performed the flood to wipe away all the sinful man from the earth. The transformation can be seen throughout the rest of Genesis as it goes on.

I would not say he changes I would say he shows his true self. You can see how he punished those who did not obey him and how he rewarded those who obeyed him. As you read later through the other chapters you can see the difference of Gods character after Jesus is born.

The book of “Genesis” I noticed that it is written in a third person narrative. In the beginning, God appears as flat because his behavior and how he is described is without change. God is merciful, everything is good and perfect. Then, God changes his behavior and punishes, and shows his wrath after seeing that sin is present showing him as a round character. I enjoyed reading Genesis because, even though I don’t believe these things actually happened, it is interesting and has drama and mystery and suspense. I like reading stories where characters change around and are not flat. It is interesting seeing how God gave everything to Adam and Eve and still temptation could not be discarded. The question really is,… if God made them “perfect” and gave them everything, why did he give them the power of will and why did he make them weak to fall for temptation? Did God made those decisions on purpose?
