Out of curiosity, do you exclusively read books in Portuguese?
I've been kind of out of the loop for the past couple of years, but should really get back to reading in Portuguese as well. What's a great modern author you'd recommend checking out?
Wishing you the best of luck on your reading journey in 2024. I hope you have a blast.
Happy reading!

Olá Lisa!
Yes, I read mostly in Portuguese, but I also read in Spanish, mainly Spanish authors, and I also read in English, but not that often.
Going back to reading in Portuguese, it's always different to get out of our comfort zone when we read, especially when we're talking about languages.
If we're talking about Portuguese authors, I'm currently reading a book by Inês Rodrigues e Melo, published by Saída de Emergência, called 'Brilho Tóxico' and it's a very interesting contemporary fantasy. If we're talking about international authors, the author Emily Henry is incredible.
Thank you very much!
Happy reading

I've noticed I'm slowly losing my Portuguese due to the whole not maintaining it, but otherwise, I try to read original publication language, whenever I can, i.e.. Spanish, French, Danish, English. But lately, I've mostly ignored non-English books, despite it being a goal I strive for every year.
I appreciate the recommendation, btw! I feel like sometimes I get stuck on the idea of only reaching for classics in those languages, which is fine, but as a reader that mostly gravitates towards new releases and modern literature, I feel like I'm missing out on more recent, popular authors if I'm not actively looking for them.
Emily Henry has been hit-n-miss for me. I really loved Beach Read, but not the subsequent two. I haven't read Happy Place ,although I have a strong feeling, based on reviews, that I would dislike it. That being said, I'm willing to maybe give Funny Story a try, as soon as the e-book price goes down from $22 :D
Have you read it?

I haven't actually read it, but I want to, and yes, the prices are quite exaggerated, unfortunately. I have ‘happy place’ and ‘Funny Story’ in e-book and in Portuguese, because they are being released by the Leya Group and now they have a partnership with kobo and have created a monthly subscription for e-book and audiobook almost unlimited so I got these two e-books for free.
As I have a degree in Languages, Literatures and Cultures, I often end up reading the classics, but as I work as a literary critic I really have to read contemporary authors who are ‘in fashion’, so to speak. So with publishing partnerships I read a lot of the new stuff that at another time I wouldn't have tried to read until years after it was published.

Oh, that subscription sounds so cool!
I work in publishing, and have been a member of Netgalley for years, so I'm constantly receiving new releases in one capacity or the other (whether it's reading manuscripts, beta-reading, or DRC-reviewing), and while I love my job, it easily leads me to neglecting all the classics that I feel like I should get to for one reason or another, you know?

Yes, I know sometimes I feel that too.
It's like we love what we do, specially when we work with books, but then we look at our shelves and think that we are not able to read everything we have because of our job.
I'm now doing the master in translation and linguistic services, so I know exactly what you feel.

Exactly! That sounds really intriguing!
It sounds like we have somewhat similar backgrounds. I have a degree in International Business Communication in English and Spanish, because I wanted to go into translation and communication.
