I agree as I didn't care much for his writing and try to avoid it now.

Tori Hook (torihoo) | 8 comments Delia Owens. Despite apparently growing up in the south, a lot of the descriptions of North Carolina marshes are inaccurate. The movie in particular was filmed in a completely different part of the country and marshes do not look like that!! That’s a swamp!! - sincerely, a deeply-devoted marsh enthusiast

Oh, I am super happy for you to write that. I thought her book was super stupid. At first I thought it was wonderful before she said that a Monarch butterfly is yellow and black. That made me livid! She is a dumb bunny! Then every comment she made about nature was suspect! Thanks for the info about the marshes as I have never been there and didn't know that.

Erica Robbin (ericarobbin) | 82 comments I'm feeling a bit disappointed, upset, and disturbed right now actually.

I have an ARC I was sent, Behind a Closed Door by J.D. Barker and there is some recent controversy over an email that he/his PR company sent to some influencers, mimicking I think what is perhaps a theme in the book.

It's a lot to unpack. I didn't think it was consistent with the author's character, as far as I know. He has since sent out an apology. But mentioning here because the circumstances are gross, highly inappropriate, and highly concerning to me.

I have yet to start the book, is on the top of my stack for my next read. And he's one of my most favorite authors. Writes beautifully. I've read all of his works except for the Monkey series, which I've refrained from because I don't think I would like those in particular for personal reasons. But have loved everything otherwise, including his collaborations. He's a very skilled and talented writer.

So this news is quite shocking actually and incredibly disappointing.

Though I have now read the book blurb completely and have realized it is being categorized as a deeper genre compared to his usual style, a genre I definitely don't read, namely erotica thriller.

So I may be just outright skipping this one for two reasons now.

Daily Mail news article here for those catching up:

New York Times bestselling author J.D Barker SLAMMED for encouraging BookTok creators to promote his thriller novel by sharing 'racy' videos and using 'only the book to cover up your naughty bits’

Article from Publishers Weekly, being dropped by his agent, and I believe the book was allotted to be preemptively considered for a bid with plans to adapt it for film:

Author J.D Barker Apologizes, Dropped by Agent After 'Creepy' BookTok Request

Another article, from Today, with additional details:

Why a bestselling author’s email to book influencers is sparking controversy

I also had no idea that "spicy" books are a term designated for erotica-leaning romance novels.

Give me a light-hearted, cutesy, “Inspirational Romance" Harlequin novel any day. I will know to be avoiding the term "spicy" from now on as well.

*Apparently we can’t post outside links, so I just bolded the titles.

Gotta agree on Andy Weir. It's clear he can only write one type of character, and not even that well, either. I've heard that apparently Project Hail Mary is good, but I've also heard that it's very similar to The Martian, which I thought was an absolute dumpster fire. No thanks.
