تختلف عملية "التعرف" على الشكل عن عملية "إدراكنا" هذا الشكل؛ الأولى عملية روتينية قصيرة، وإن كانت ضرورية لفهم الأشياء الخارجية أثناء تحرّكنا في هذا العالم؛ فهي طريقة شبيهة بالعمل التجاري. أما الثانية فهي على النقيض من ذلك؛ لأنّ "الإدراك" هو النشاط المرتبط بالتأثير الجمالي؛ فعندما نتعمق حقاً في شكلٍ أو كائنٍ ما وندركه، يحدث ما هو أكثر وأبعد من عمليات التعرف. نحن "ندرك" علاقات العناصر المكونة لهذا الشكل؛ لأن تجربتنا الديناميكية الخاصة تظهر فيه؛ النشاط الذي نتحدث عنه هو نشاطنا نحن، وعملية إدراك الشكل إحياءٌ للتجربة الحركية والعاطفية من الماضي؛ ماضينا نحن. إدراك الجمال يجعلنا ندرك أننا أحياء بشكل صحيح، فإنْ عَدمْنا إدراك الجمال فلن نكون أحياء، بل سنبدو أحياء فحسب.
