The MC is suicidal -- presumably due to his Catholic guilt over his homosexuality, although that is not ever spelled out -- and it's very strange to see that take a backseat to a murder mystery involving mostly shitty people. It's possible the plan was to explore this further in the sequel(s) that never happened, but I wouldn't want to read any further even if they actually existed. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
The romance was underwhelming, even though I desperately want some happiness for Nathan. I struggled to care about the mystery, even though it was technically well-written. And it took me off guard because I know this remains an old-school favorite of Josh Lanyon fans, an author I've really enjoyed in the past. I'm going to need a minute to forget about this one before I can read her again.
