Damn I meant Gail!

message 352: by Gail (new)

Gail Thanks for the welcome!

message 353: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Thanks for checking on me Ruth. Last time I looked, where I live is not in danger of being hit by the hurricane.

message 354: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Hurricane Erin might be a threat to North Carolina and states north of it.
I know how you guys feel.
Hope you’re all ok. It’s stressful not knowing at this point whether or not to “get out of dodge “.

I may have mentioned this before, but a similar issue: I am going out on a limb here and mention her pen name, which was Sophie Dawson. (Not sure if this is who she was in real life.)
We met on another good reads chat years ago as fellow authors. She put out a number of reads in the inspirational fiction genre.
Then, after about 4 years, nothing. Even now I don't know if she became incapacitated, died, or what happened.
But about 3 years later, maybe 2 years ago, someone started using her name to promote the sleeziest reads you can imagine! She kept coming up in my e-mail as having read and giving 5 star reviews to stuff I knew she would never have promoted or read.
This went on for awhile.
I notified a moderator on good reads, and put out a note on Amazon but nothing seemed to stop it. After awhile it simply ended.
She would have been Very unhappy had she known, and apparently her family never knew or weren't concerned.

Geraldine I’m not a fake.

Geraldine 👍🏻.
There must be members from the North Carolina coast here

Just out of curiosity I Googled the question “Who at Amazon is in charge of Goodreads?”
This is the response I got:

Goodreads is owned by Amazon, but there isn't a specific individual named as being in charge of Goodreads within Amazon. Goodreads operates as a separate platform, though it is integrated with Amazon. While Amazon's fingerprints are on Goodreads, direct mentions of its parent company are scarce on the platform.

This speaks volumes as to why Goodreads sucks! Almost sounds like the Biden administration.

That’s right. It’s all about selling books with no concern for oversight of the contents of their Website.

I think the latest scam for older men is you get a friend request from a nice looking younger woman. If you accept their friendship then you get a private message telling you what an interesting guy you are blah blah blah. You need to immediately delete and block them. Don’t accept their friendship in the first place.
If they are old, homely and over weight it’s probably a legitimate friend request. Lol

Awww. that means nice looking people who stay fit don't get any friends!

But seriously, as I look at the different discussions I have joined here over the years, they are pretty much all dying out.
I'm not sure Good Reads will continue for much longer.
And to be honest, although I'd stay to keep up my book list and see what my friends are reading, you may see me bow out of the community discussions very soon.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 85 comments I've noticed that too, MaryJo. A year ago, there were spirited discussions in several groups that I enjoyed, but not much discussion now. Why do you think this is?

I see where there are new people joining the senior writers discussion, and participation is lively there.
So that is good.

I guess people are generally boring and introverted.

message 368: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments And Ruth I see that you just tactfully moved a discussion that was winding up on the writer's discussion over here.
Will add a comment about what you, Geraldine said, about people afraid to leave their homes.
That is sad, when they are decent people who simply want a better life. But when you go to a country illegally, there are risks.
Our borders had to be secured! Fentanyl, gang bangers, sex traffikers, and just a whole lot of neer do wells who drain the system.
I made a comment months ago that since the U.S. did not clamp down the way it should have on illegal entrey 40 years ago, people will get hurt.
ICE is going after the riff raff with a vengeance, but have it clear if other illegal aliens find themselves in the net they may be deported too.

And like you I could give a flip what other countries think about us. They all have issues of their own to address.
Things have gotten so bad here in so many areas, eroding away the fiber of this country, that it is taking extreme measures to stop the bleed.

message 369: by Robert, Head Geezer (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) | 620 comments Mod
Well said Mary Jo I couldn’t agree more. An illegal entry is a crime no matter what their bleeding heart motive is for coming here.

message 370: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments I am very glad to see the issue of migrant workers coming in to assist with crops that have to be harvested in a timely manner - such as peaches - is being addressed.
They want the work and the farmers need them.
Decades ago the system worked pretty well; until some well intentioned people decided these seasonal workers from Mexico should not be separated from their families that long.
That was the beginning of the huge problem that evolved regarding illegal entry and people not going back after.

When I lived in The Philippines years ago, we assisted two of our hired helpers to have the funds to get jobs in Hong Kong, where they could make more money than we could pay them.
You did not see the people in Hong Kong inviting their families to come along too.
Many people from 3rd world countries get jobs to support their families abroad, and they make the sacrifice of being away from their homeland for far longer periods of time than workers who come here during harvest seasons.

message 374: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Just as a matter of general conversation:
Personally I am reassured by so much of what our current president is implementing and the precedents it is setting.
But it would be Soooo nice if prices starting dropping again.
Some items have just gotten more expensive, and so has gas!
A let up is not apparent here as yet, although my husband says the statistics say things are turning around.

message 375: by Robert, Head Geezer (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) | 620 comments Mod
We haven't seen much if any reduction in prices of food and gas here either. Other than that I'm very pleased with the current administration, but something has to be done about liberal judges over stepping their authority!

Winter, no bugs, no allergies, no mowing the yard, no mulching, planting disgusting flowers and plants, weed eating. I love it accept for the heating bills. Luckily if you’re retired you never have to get out and go to work and shoveling the driveway.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 85 comments We've had some cooler temps here the past few days - in the 80s. I'm afraid, though, that summer will come back with a vengeance just when we're breathing a sigh of relief.

message 383: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Bhear | 112 comments we need some rain to help our plants. We will have to water everything soon. My mom's a flower person, unfortunately if the deer don't eat them the moles get them from the underside. I like flowers, I just don't want to mess with them.

Maybe she should try marigolds; the critters don't seem to like them as much. They need some tlc to get going - plenty of water - but then they are very low maintenance.

Amanda Bhear | 112 comments Thanks, I'll pass that along.

message 387: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Bhear | 112 comments They seem to eat a lot. We learned not long ago that sunflower hulls are toxic to plants. So if they are over your flower gardens, & spit them out there, it makes the ground toxic to plants. We almost didn't figure it out, why nothing would grow under the bird feeders, it was the sunflower hulls. Who knew, right?

message 388: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Bhear | 112 comments We started using a hulless birdfeed. It costs more but doesn't contaminate the ground. We have to put hot sauce in it to keep racoons & squirels out of the birdfeeders. The birds can't taste it I guess. Good luck!

message 389: by Robert, Head Geezer (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) | 620 comments Mod
So are Sunflower and Safflower seeds toxic to humans who eat them and suck on the hulls?

message 390: by Robert, Head Geezer (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) | 620 comments Mod
Yes, for sure!

message 391: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Bhear | 112 comments No problem. We get all kinds, we will sit & watch them. The humming birds get kind of aggresive somtimes. I've had them dive bomb me when I go out to get the feeder. Fierce little things for as small as they are.

That's the only thing I know of that would wipe out all her info.

Yikes people!!! Sorry for the disappearing act. I had a major computer crash…then at the same time I had TWO kidney stones. Rough month for me. When I got the stones dealt with and tried to get my technical issues in order, I couldn’t get back into Goodreads. I really screwed something up. I couldn’t get signed into Goodreads even on my phone. I just decided to make a new account. Mine was just GONE. Idk what happened and o can tell you Goodreads help desk was zero help. lol. I lost all my books read and all my friends and every thing.
