message 301: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie | 1 comments Thank you for the invitation! I have a passion for words and enjoy reading a wide range of fiction. Whenever I read, I often come across topics that pique my interest and lead me to explore non-fiction. I particularly enjoy autobiographies and have a keen interest in U.S. history as well as French and European history. I’ve written poetry and countless stories, though I often struggle to see them through to completion. I mainly write for myself, but who knows—maybe one day I'll publish my work!

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Hi Lynnie!

I'll be checking here regularly to see if you have heard from Robert, Ruth.
Hopefully by Thurs. or Friday he will be able to send word.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 85 comments Robert, alive and kicking is great news. You have a lot of support here, and that's worth a lot. Keep on keeping on.

Rosie | 46 comments Ruth, we have been heat index hot of 105-120 for weeks here in eastern Virginia. I enjoy the heat, but I’m a strange duck.

message 310: by Rosie (new)

Rosie | 46 comments Ruth, it is. I’m originally from western Oklahoma and there it was like an air fryer, here it is like a steamer.

It's been hot here in NJ! I actually love the heat. It is now storming so the temp has dropped and will be low for the next dew days.

What a bunch of BS over this young woman Sydney Sweeney advertising a pair of jeans. What does that have to do with genes? Everything is genetic, even diarrhea! It’s in your jeans! Hahaha!

Yes, important things.
Such discussions and hoopla about such trivial things is immature ad nauseum.

message 317: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine I used to love Loni Anderson in
WKRP in Cincinnati. That was a great show back in the 80’s it was, I believe.
And Love Boat
And Dallas

Geraldine Love Boat

message 319: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Texas has wanted to secede from the country periodically for years, if I’m right .

message 320: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine They could call it “Texit”. Like “brexit “

message 321: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine It’s not just a Democrat vs Republican thing The Republicans fled DC to avoid the vote on Epstein a couple weeks ago

message 322: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine And remember when ted Cruz fled to Cancun during some weather crisis a couple years ago

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 85 comments Those Democrats will have to go home at some point and do their jobs. Or they could resign :-) The thing they can't do is keep their jobs and not return to Texas. These Democrats are pretending that gerrymandering is something invented by Republicans. Both parties have been doing it since March of 1812 - but suddenly Dems are calling foul because it's being done to them this time.

Let’s try to not involve politics into our group. There are other groups such as The Great Debate if one desires to discuss political issues.

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Ruth wrote: "Ted Cruz was already in Cancun. The democrats in Texas ran with misinformation. Democrats in Texas have gone rogue for the past 8 years."

Yes, I am also quite certain Ted Cruz was already vacationing in Cancun when that happened. He was criticized at that time for not coming back to Texas fast enough, which is what I recall.

Here in Colorado and in other states, Democrats have been trying to quietly redistrict to their advantage for years. Of course the 'baddies' are the always the ones who don't like what's happening.

message 328: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Sorry, Robert! Did not read your caution until I made my posts.

That’s okay Mary Jo. I like to debate politics myself, but I’m concerned that this topic will evolve into heated arguments that will drive members away. Having said that it sure makes members comment and post. So far we are mostly as quiet as a graveyard. Considering the ages of most of most of our members, that maybe why they never post! R.I.P!

I am a 56 year old Colorado senior. I like historical fiction and psychological thrillers. I have 4 grown boys and a daughter in college. I enjoy reading and my goal this year is 100 books. Go AZ Cardinals ❤️

We lost seven members just because I reminded people to introduce themselves when joining. What the hell is the matter with people now days?

message 333: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 85 comments Robert, I think you hit on something by recognizing that more people post when they have something at stake, something they believe in. As long as things remain civil, maybe that's a good thing?

message 334: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Bhear | 112 comments I get you. I have had so many emails about buying something I've never heard of, it's ridiculous! I check credit cards to make sure I haven't gotten a bill for it. When there's nothing there nothing there I block it & throw it in the trash where it belongs.

message 335: by Robert, Head Geezer (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) | 620 comments Mod
Just a tip for the future Mike. It’s best when joining a group to get a feel for the members by introducing yourself and tell a little about yourself. There is plenty of time to tout your material at later time. Coming right out of the gate turns people off and shows desperation.

Kellie | 172 comments Ruth wrote: "It’s funny to me, American Eagle stock has gone up 18% since the commercial. People are buying just to show the liberals no matter how loud they yell, we AINT BUYING THEIR CRYING. HAHAHAHA."

It's ridiculous what these people are yelling about. They should be concerned about all these famous women who flaunt their bodies and make these young girls, who might now be the same shape as them, feel bad about themselves or have these young girls dress like them and create problems.

Robin Quinton | 1 comments Good Afternoon,
I am High School AP English teacher and a big reader. I try to keep up with what my students are reading as well as my own TBR. I do not subscribe to just one genre, but I find fantasy the one I least gravitate to.

I get friend requests from well known authors who are interested in my writing. Bullshit, a well known author is not going to friend a nobody like me. The scammer is saying they are someone they are not to get my personal information. I wasn’t born yesterday!

message 342: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments I will thank Ruth once again here in this chat room for being my adviser when personally receiving such an invitation.
My instincts were totally correct, and it is just common sense not to start giving people personal e-mail addresses, phone numbers, etc., when you know nothing about them.
In fact about 2 years ago I deleted another 'friend' who wanted to get too chummy too fast.
But Ruth had the scoop on these fakes alright.

Hear hear Kellie! Why aren't these public figures encouraging young girls to value their bodies rather than flaunt them or give them so casually in one night stands? What is the future in that?
Education, proper diets, maturity, young people of both sexes need proper role models and parenting to give them a future.
Sadly too many of them have neither.

When you receive a friend request you cannot be sure that their homepage photo is actually that person. Even the number of books they have read maybe false. Perhaps these people are actually incarcerated and have access to the internet which they shouldn’t but probably do. I also caution about adding photos of your young children or grand children in your homepage photo. This just adds a possible opening for trolling predators.

I get a lot of questions especially from newbies having trouble posting or figuring out how to do something on this website. Goodreads is not user friendly and even though I try to help I can only Google to find answers. Is anyone in our group an expert on Goodreads, I could sure need your help. Maybe I should start a Topic Questions and Answers for members having problems? These problems usually occur due to posting on cellphones!

message 346: by Karissa (new)

Karissa (swansonkl) | 1 comments Hi, I live in northeastern Illinois, suburbs of Chicago. I am a reader not a writer except for journaling which is so cathartic. I love historical fiction, adventure books, biography, mystery and some non-fiction as well. If I see it recommended a few times I will give it a try. Most recent books read that i would recommend are 'The Names', 'Once Upon a Wardrobe', 'Sipsworth', and 'Be Ready When the Luck Happens'. The latter two in audio. There are already some reads on here that I can't wait to check out. What are you all reading right now?

message 347: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirsty_tothill) | 6 comments I have only been active on here again for the last couple of months - I come and read the threads daily, before and after work - living in Aus the majority of the chatter happens while I am asleep. Enjoy reading it - joined to get book recommendations and also maybe form some friendships. I have sent out several friend requests to people which have been accepted - I do understand, though, that everyone is wary. I've been contacted by a well known author as well as a General from the US military, both wanting to get to know me better. It's so disappointing that people like that make people like me suspicious of everyone's motives. As well as everyone suspicious of mine. I just wanna read and talk to people who like to read too.

message 349: by Gail (last edited Aug 15, 2025 05:54PM) (new)

Gail Hello to the Senior Readers & Writers Group. I'm a new member and thought I'd introduce myself. I love to read and write and I guess I AM a senior. I also like walking outdoors, yoga and music.

I've self-published two children's picture books (made my own dream come true after decades of query letters), one with an official release next week. I'm married to my best friend, Tim, and we have two grown sons, one who is also a published author (horror, sci-fi horror, poetry). The ink runs deep, he's a 4th generation writer. Oh, and by the way, we live with the two sweetest kitties in the galaxy.

I look forward to getting to know you and sharing books and more.
