Are those spillways still handling the water, Ruth? If we don't hear from you for awhile I'll be thinking, maybe not!

message 202: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Really? I made the last comment on this group 6 days ago?
Doesn't anyone have anything interesting to share, what they are currently reading, etc? All of the discussions, except this one, are totally quiet.

The Great Debate isn't that active either., although more so than this.

I don’t know what the problem is, unless everyone is introverts. I’ve been trying to recruit new members, but when they join they don’t comment either. About to give up instead of wasting my time.

Don’t you mean you love the ten of us out of 525 members. We are the only ones who interact! People are so rude and don’t even introduce themselves or even say hello, kiss my ass or go to hell! What’s this world coming to?

A group is only as good as its members, and we are falling way behind.

I agree Ruth. I really enjoy connecting with the ones who have a voice and an opinion about anything. You would think that seniors would be blabbing their heads off, since they don’t have much time left to do so.

message 207: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Ruth wrote: "The Great Debate is a self serving hateful group that doesn’t even like like minded people. Hahaha. Just kidding, but not really kidding."

Actually you know what? The great debate turns even me off.
they are not like minded to me, but talked about you , who are like minded to them. Critisizing your MO . It happened to be over the one thing you and I could agree on. I would have quit the group already, but its almot not even worth my effort.

Rosie | 46 comments I think I used to be a part of that Great Debate group and now I can’t even find it lol

They could have least changed the name!

message 210: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Well here you go!
Thanks for all the comments generated by my comment!
I agree, the discussions and comments are still fun even if you only have a handful.
Geraldine, you have become one of my favorite more liberal minded persons.

message 211: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments As to The Great Debate group often being rude, etc., I guess I've been obtuse, because I haven't seen that much of it.
Just read some comments about immigration and news of the day, both totally okay, informative and timely.
Sometimes there isn't anything I want to comment on.

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) | 620 comments Mod
Sometimes you have to say something that is shocking to get a reaction. That leads to dialog. Sort of Trumpian you might say.

message 213: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Thank you , Ruth and Mary Jo. I appreciate your friendship also. Very nice to be cordial as you both are also

Under a Tornado watch here in SW Missouri. Probably spending the evening in the basement, but whats new?

Not a problem here. My basement is where the bar is located!

What does a tornado and a ex wife have in common? Sooner or later one of them is going to get the mobile home!!!

message 217: by Frances (new)

Frances Applequist | 11 comments I am working on a short story and have a delemma. I have a teenage cast of characters, and I am not one. After researching current teenage slang, I thought, "If all my characters speak like that, my adult readers won't know what they're saying. " So, I chose one sidekick character and gave her a slang word or phrase in each conversation. We'll see if that works. In two novels I published having Marines, I gave the same Marine all the swearing. It kept the novels from becoming four letter words and made him a colorful continuing character.

Sorry I haven't been online. My life is very hectic. My mom was in the hospital and the only way that I get to see her is when she is in the hospital. I have been reading Find Her by Sarah A. Denzil.

message 221: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 85 comments Scout here. I revived The Great Debate group after Robert abruptly deleted it without notifying members, and after asking several of you if you wanted to keep it going. You said you did. There are two moderators. I have never been rude to anyone, but I have no control over what the other moderator does. Just wanted to be clear about that. Thanks for your positive comment MaryJo.

message 222: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Robert, how did your surgery go?

message 223: by Robert, Head Geezer (new)

Robert Roberts (goodreadscomrobertroberts) | 620 comments Mod
Heart cath on Monday didn’t go well. I have a rapid growing plaque that is clogging my arteries. Ninety percent blockage in two arteries and ninety five percent in the other. It’s the same as I had in August when I had the heart attack. They can’t do a bypass because my lungs are too bad. Only option left is angioplasty. Haven’t decided to do it or just let nature take its course. Too bad for me I guess.

message 224: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine You’ll probably live forever, Robert

message 227: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Obviously this is a very personal decision for anyone.
You have always expressed a very strong stance on your life and how you want to live it, until the end.
Life is a gift, a precious one.
Wishing you wisdom - and divine guidance.

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Scout wrote: "Scout here. I revived The Great Debate group after Robert abruptly deleted it without notifying members, and after asking several of you if you wanted to keep it going. You said you did. There are ..."

No of course you cannot control what others say on The Great Debate, Scout - not completely. But if you notice someone's comments being inappropriate - and I give you complete credit for good judgement here - you have the right to call them on it.
I've been on Good Reads for quite some time now, and on two occasions in other chats it was necessary to censure someone for being out of line. Robert had to do this one time as I recall.
And of course, individually we each have the right to withdraw if we don't like the direction a discussion or group is going in.
For a while I belonged to a chat group on another web site. But they were much more liberal in their stance than I am, and after awhile their attitude toward me got very cool. I took the hint and left.

I’ll go out of this world just like I came in. Bald headed, no teeth and probably wearing a diaper!

message 237: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Has anyone read the book Another Country by Mary Fifer?
It was written quite some time ago, but is still so pertinent for today.
It talks about the generation gap - thus the title - and after the author does her research she comes to the conclusion that there is usually one basic reason why some people enjoy the later years and some do not. It is the state of our health.

Very true Mary Jo. That maybe my problem, I enjoyed life a little too much and now it’s caught up with me.

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Ruth wrote: "Happy 250th Anniversary Army!"

I was very happy when there was no violence that came from the protests.
But reading interviews from people who were protesting and why.... could not help but thinking a lot of these people have been brain washed by distorted news coverage or have their priorities all wrong.
Well, not much I can do about that....

message 240: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 85 comments There's nothing we can do about people who choose not to be informed about what's going on in the world. I have a friend who watches only ABC Morning shows, and I have to realize that she's uninformed. But I love her anyway and avoid current topics when we talk. She recently posted on Facebook that deportation of criminal illegals is wrong. We won't talk about that.

Now we will just wait and see how Iran and their proxies react. Everyone needs to be on their toes and not congregate in large groups.

message 243: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Ruth wrote: "Well, I agree, but if he waited a year from now they would have nuclear warheads. Those disgusting liars. America just made the world a safer place. Other countries are applauding Trump for his act..."

What choice did Trump have? Those fanatics controlling Iran are hell bent on doing whatever it takes to annihilate Israel - for starters.
That situation could not be ignored.
