E | 37 comments Good ones Ruth!

My Dad liked this one:

D.H Lawrence
Self-pity

"I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.

A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself."

I think that quote was in the GI Jane movie. The Navy Lieutenant liked to say it to the RTC.

I've been friended and dumped twice out there in GR. within a day.
Don't know why, don't care.

I read what I read.
Gotta say my truth.
Can't all be Bambi and Old Yeller. ( I love them)

Feel better, Robert!

This is a nice group!

There are some people that just need killing.”

message 156: by Randall (new)

Randall Moore (goodreadscomrandall_moore) | 47 comments Have any of you read “The Kind Worth Killing” by Peter Swanson? It’s like a Patricia Highsmith novel that has you rooting for the psychopath murderer just to find out how she’ll get away with it. It reveals the darkness in the reader.

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Any time you want to wake up the chat, Robert, just threaten to shut it down. :)

I haven't been to G.R.'s and the chats every day either, because other things have had to take priority.
But I always come back.

If three weeks go by without a comment from me, you can figure I was called to my heavenly home.

Here is an example of why it is Sooo interesting to watch what is going on in the national scene today. Not only is there often good news to listen to, but no matter what, it is always interesting.
You never know what's going to happen with this administration!

message 170: by E (new)

E | 37 comments Three years ago, at the end of this month, my Skip died. He developed ventricular tachycardia. It is a lethal heart rhythm.
I used to practically do a military crawl to sneak in to see him at night after hours.

He knew his time was almost done, and he always smiled when I came to see him in
ICU. He'd look at this wrinkled older woman and still see a 30-something young me again and smile.
I watched them break all his ribs, trying to save him. His internal defibrillator and pacemaker could not do the job.

I'm going out of group for a bit. April is a sad month for me. Be back some time in May, guys.
Ruth, you are a pip. You make me laugh.
EC

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments E., Your loss and your memories are so very personal.... no one can take away the ache, but many of us understand it.
There is a price for loving, but it is so worth it.
See you next month.

message 172: by E (new)

E | 37 comments Sweet Ruth. Thank you
so much.
The last thing he said to me before his monitors screamed VTAC was don't be afraid of anything beetle.

I still feel him around every now and then. He's probably fishing in the "Gulf of America" right now though. :)

message 173: by E (new)

E | 37 comments Thanks, Mary Jo,
I would not have traded my time for anything.

I know we all have losses as we get older.

You have to focus on the good-times when your loved one was still alive. The worst thing they would want for you, is to continue to grieve and not enjoy the time you have left.

message 176: by E (new)

E | 37 comments Aye, it is true.

We brought out the best in each other. He will be there for me when I go. I have no doubt of it.

Ruth if you haven’t read it, you might try the book Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark. Great read! It might get you out of your slump.

Rosie | 46 comments Ruth that happened to me about 8-10 years ago and my oldest daughter introduced me to audiobooks and it has made all the difference in the world. I’m still “reading” but I can stay focused and enjoy myself while even doing other things, walking, driving, laundry, cooking& yard work.

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments I'm supposed to get notified when people comment here - but I don't. Oh well, I can do it the long way....

Am currently reading A Walk in the Park, written by a guy who with his best friend decided to walk the length of the Grand Canyon....
they did Not know what they were letting themselves in for. At times I was so disgusted with these 2 grown men thinking like teenagers I would have thrown the book across the room - only it's on my tablet so can't do that.
But if you like this sort of thing it is the most fascinating chronicle of the Canyon, things you certainly never knew.
Plus the people who once did and now call it home, the beauty of it, and jaw dropping adventures of those who have hiked it ....
And much more.
So of course I will finish it.

I've hit slumps where I can't Find anything that holds my interest.
But it never lasts. For the past few years my reading tastes have broadened alot - although the psychological thrillers you like are not nearly at the top of my favorite genres.

message 188: by Agnes (new)

Agnes (silkchapters) | 36 comments Whenever I am in a slump I read a Memoir and it takes me away from everything and brings me back into real life. But I usually then go back into thrillers.

message 189: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine I started to read more after I listened to a book on tape by Joseph Wambaugh. I was working the overnight shift in a mind numbing job and I started listening on my headphones. It was about 1986. It inspired me to want to read more

We are fine, but a lot of people without power. Poles down and out buildings demolished around the area. No casualties just debris every where. Tornado’s are just a fact of life here and most people have basements to go to. Just the first of many more to come.

message 193: by Rosie (new)

Rosie | 46 comments We have been quite dry here in eastern Virginia but had a lovely inch of rain today, thankful as the grass was starting to get crunchy.

But thinking of all the people in my home state of Oklahoma and the flooding going on there. But what’s even more sad is that they are flooding now, but probably won’t have any more for the rest of the summer.

message 194: by Rosie (new)

Rosie | 46 comments So sad, Ruth.

message 195: by MaryJo (new)

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Just got home last night from attending a weekend wedding in Oklahoma, a little southeast of Oklahoma City. The weather was beautiful there after several days of rain.
But just northwest of Oklahoma City and into the Texas panhandle we hit rain, rain, rain, all the way back to southern Colorado.
Some of those areas are very grateful for the rain; haven't had as much.
We continue to be saturated here, and it is mixed with snow!
Drier weather predicted soon, and hope so for your part of the country, too, Ruth.

Retired at 50? Thats amazing, wish I could have done that. All I can say is enjoy it, travel, read or do whatever you want. Thats the best part of being retired. There is so much to do out there.
