Most of the time I come to this site in the morning, after getting the e-mail notices of the latest comments, and again sometime in the afternoon when the latest comments have popped up in my e-mail.I Could make a comment on almost every topic that's been addressed, but sort of pick and choose - and decline to make a further comment if there doesn't seem any point in it. But the other comments are certainly thought provoking!
Because keeping up Good Reads for the reasons I joined anyway, to get my mysteries out there and find out what others are reading, is not almost pointless, these discussions are about all that keep me here.
I've been told blogs and book discussion groups have really gone downhill; everyone posts on face book, etc. now.
We don't do face book here, nor any other of the public platforms because these social media platforms are such a huge invasion of privacy.
Mary Jo I got off Facebook years ago. Goodreads is the only social media I’m involved in. I’m not a huge reader, so I mainly use my two groups to socialize with other interesting folks. Love hearing what they think on a number of topics.
I don’t take any comments too seriously, even mine. I purposely say things that are way over the top to generate responses. Some are so weird that I get a comment from some who never post. That’s why I started these groups, to interact with other people with like interests.
It is good Not to be over sensitive - especially in the discussions here. (small chuckle.)I enjoy the fact you two aren't that.
In a discussion group one should discern between opinion and facts.
Are the opinions based on good knowledge base, and reliable facts?
It has become quite obvious in a number of topics that we doubt most of the mainstream media as good fact providers.
Others don't agree and there will always be a huge divide for that reason alone.
And one can tell a lot about personalities by what people like to read....
I had a hellatious experience on facebook . but enjoy social media ==so far, I had to quit facebook, but like goodreads.
Everyone has their right to an opinion, but we need to respect each other that we all have an opinion. I have several friends, and family, that if you differ with them they will drop you. Not right!!! I'm glad that here we are all allowed to have a difference of opinion.
I only watch new because I like to be updated on the recent news. I love reading and this is why I joined the club. I already belong to Book of the month Club (BOTM).
How do I get to the first part of this discussion? I get notices via email, but can never find the correct location since what I get in mail is not used to go directly to that topic... Sorry, but I am very busy ven as a senior...I apologize that this will turn up somewhere where it may not be relevant, but I couldn't figure out how to do anything else... HELP! LOL
Glenda I’m assuming you are getting your emails through your cellphone. You have to scroll up to where the conversation starts. I would suggest you change your settings on Goodreads to get updates in realtime instead of weekly emails. Otherwise it is very difficult to be caught up on comments.
I will be adding a new short story in a few days titled Eyes of Deep Ellum. It’s a fictional story, but based on a true event in Texas. This is the first story I’ve written in years, but recovering from a heart attack a couple of weeks ago I didn’t much else to do. You will find this story under our topic What’s in your Shorts?
Heart attack. Not good. I did cardiac rehab earlier this year and met a lot of other patients who’d had heart attacks. I have a different affliction, but no less serious, sigh. Get better and improve your lifestyle choices in favor of long life. Health and life, my friend.
I’ll probably survive, but I can’t change my life style. Got to do what I like to do or life is not worth living. At 75 if the heart doesn’t get me then it will be prostate, Alzheimers or some form of cancer. Live for today and hell with tomorrow!
I’m with you. What does the medical establishment really know anyway? Everyone I work with are drinkers too!
My dad gave up drinking shortly before he died. For various reasons. He had cancer too. Drinking was one of his few pleasures. I still think that did him in .

Family history of coronary disease. Like you, Robert, I refuse to live in fear and be miserable because of strict adherence to all sorts of rules.
I take my blood pressure meds, and follow the moderation rule for most other things.
Not a beer drinker, never smoked much, and always exercised, - and Still had a heart attack! No guarantees in this life.
Ruth that is great that you took care of your father. My mother is 98 and I put her in assisted living last year. She requires quite a lot of care , like old people do.
My parents both 98 years spend their last day at my Apartment. I couldn’t put them in a care center they
ask me to leave them die at home. And I did it.
Some families are more dysfunctional than others. My siblings and I are all coming together to make sure mom is taken care of. She has activities every day, can socialize, and go to the dining room for all her meals. Fortunately, my father was a combat veteran and she gets veterans benefits to pay for much of her monthly rent
Glad to hear you’re doing better, Robert! I was touched by what Luz, Ruth, and Geraldine wrote about their care and love for their parents! I had a stroke when I was 50 years old. I have a lot of health problems but, I don’t want to bore you all. The Rheumatoid Arthritis brought most of my diseases that I deal with. I take a lot of medications daily, including chemotherapy every six months. Enough about me, you all seem like a nice group of people. I don’t have any parents, since they both died years ago. My mom and I were estranged for years because she didn’t like my husband. I have a great husband. Plus 2 great adult boys. I’m blessed in many ways!
Ruth and Luz that’s wonderful for taking your parents in your home and taking care of them. I know how hard it is to see your parents with dementia and ill. I know since I worked in a nursing home and as a private nurse in patients homes. They became to me like family and when they passed away it was very hard on me!
Just posted a short story The Eyes of Deep Ellum at our topic What’s in your shorts? It’s rather long so I had to post it in two parts.
Robert wrote: "I will be adding a new short story in a few days titled Eyes of Deep Ellum. It’s a fictional story, but based on a true event in Texas. This is the first story I’ve written in years, but recovering..."Feel Better Robert!!!
Ruth wrote: "Oh amen. The healthcare workers we had were astounding. Day or night, they would answer our calls and questions. One made a couple of trips just to give ME a shoulder to cry on when I needed it. An..."Ruth,
Dementia is very hard. My mom has dementia and her aunt had it as well. It is so sad to see them get whisked away slowly. So glad that the healthcare workers were great to you.
Sigh....There have been several posts in this discussion group under several headings yesterday and today, including a book recommendation I made yesterday.
But none of them are showing up under 'notifications' in the upper right hand corner of this screen, and all of a sudden I'm not getting them in my e-mail either.
Anyone else having a problem?
Not me. Must say, I'm glad it isn't Just me.When I managed to find a place to get 'see what your friends are reading', the notifications just stopped.
It is not user friendly here on G.R. without them.
I have to go to the discussion board to see if any topics are highlighted in red. Those are the comment I never got and didn’t know they existed. After I read the comment I have to click on the tiny box at the bottom of the discussion. The box will turn blue and should start receiving comments. Goodreads is soooooo lame!
Robert wrote: "I have to go to the discussion board to see if any topics are highlighted in red. Those are the comment I never got and didn’t know they existed. After I read the comment I have to click on the tin..."Thanks Robert! I will try that.
