I thought I had seen the answer to this here befire, but searching didn't turn up anything.

The protagonist is a man originally from Ireland, but is now on the American continent. However it was settled by Arabs and Chinese instead of Europeans.

I cannot remember his name, but I do recall ge meets a native American named Mohammed Ten Bears.

I was talking with a friend about different books and stories, and I brought this one up. They are interested and anted to know the name so they could read it. But I'm drawing a complete blank.
