PattyMacDotComma I am enjoying a series of novellas by Aussie author Nick Earls, which make up the Wisdom Tree collection. The first, Gotham, begins as a superficial pop star interview in New York, but develops into something more.
Gotham by Nick Earls My review of Gotham: Wisdom Tree 1

======
The second, Venice, is set in Brisbane, where a ypunger brother makes himself indispensable.

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

This reads like a reddit creepypasta post, it's eerie and ambiguous, cosmic horror realm. I like that there's morse code, symbols and different languages so you have to...

Over the Influence A Memoir by Joanna "JoJo" Levesque

description

She ate and left no crumbs!! If you want a no holds barred peek into the reality of the music industry and how exploitative it can be towards young talent, look no further. But make no mistake, this memoir is not a "woe is me" tale, but one of resilience, pivoting, rebirth...

The Night Guest by Hildur Knútsdóttir

A taut, effective novella with a sympathetic protagonist - or victim, shall we say. It was even a bit humorous, the parts where her hypochondriac thoughts manifested in paranoid googling of her symptoms (which we're all guilty of at some point). The horror hung on the periphery, in the memories one cannot remember, of not being able to...

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

I recognize this book was probably trailblazing in its day, but having read so many modern haunted house stories (yes, of which they took inspiration from this book), the original seems tame in comparison. I was so! bored! Not that I need drama and gore, but most of this novel was...

PamG (lynguy1) | 1025 comments Here is my 3.16 rounded to 3 stars review of The Woodsmoke Women's Book of Spells: A witchy, spellbinding tale of magic and love by Rachel Greenlaw:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Magical Realism, Romance
Overall, I enjoyed the entertaining and atmospheric story, but it wasn’t what I expected. However, the world-building was excellent and it was a nice change-of-pace read that was also thought-provoking. The exploration of relationships was well-done.

PattyMacDotComma George Saunders is one of the very best short story writers. He reveres the Russian masters. I, on the other hand, prefer his work, like the moving, inventive, bizarre stories in Tenth of December. What an imagination!

PattyMacDotComma The skies of the Scottish Hebrides in Peter May's Lewis Trilogy mysteries are often as dark as the covers suggest, but the people's stories are fascinating. The Chessmen was the last, but a new fourth one just came out that I'm looking forward to. A trilogy+1?
