Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs by Camilla TownsendThe author is a history prof at Rutgers. She based her research on indigenous accounts, and I liked this fresh perspective Mesoamerican history, particularly how this area came to be New Spain.

Finlay Donovan Rolls the DiceElle Cosimano has written her novels as standalones because she alludes to events in previous novels, but she has refrained from making the latest novel completely spoiler-y. So it would be okay to delve into the series here.

Gotta love a feisty role model who sticks to her standards. Taylor Swift by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is a well-illustrated children's bio of this popular entertainer who seems to be right up there with Elvis and the Beatles when it comes to her fans - the Swifties. Nice girl.
My review of Taylor Swift with several illustrations that do her justice
Storm Child by Aussie author Michael Robotham is the latest in his always excellent Cyrus Haven series. The action is in Scotland this time. I wish this unsettling, timely story weren't so believable.
My review of Storm Child

i liked everything but the ending, which was unsatisfactory to me, both the motive for the murder (kinda weak), the identity of the murderer, and also the main character's decision after they had figured out the former two mysteries.

WAKE UP SHEEPLE!
read this for the first time at my old head age, don't know why it took me so long. and wow, it was awful, in the archaic sense of the word, as in it inspired awe within me, overwhelmed me.

Here is my 4 star review of Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Paranormal Romantic Suspense / Urban Fantasy
Great world-building
A large number of characters
Plenty of action and suspense
Some romantic heat
The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David GrannIt was more interesting than I had expected given that so much was revealed in the title. Murder, mutiny, disease, and starvation revealed just how thin is the veneer of civilisation that covers man.

Finished The White Queen by Philippa Gregory today and started Thornyhold by Mary Stewart. I own these books and they are re-reads for me.
TIME Magazine called a song about lynching, "Strange Fruit", the song of the 20th century. How Percival Everett managed to write a satire about such a subject, The Trees, and make it laugh-out-loud funny is beyond me.
My review of The TreesShortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize - no wonder.
Finished That Sik Luv (Jescie Hall), now reading Punk 57 (Penelope Douglas). I chose the titles, my husband picks which one I read next lol
Leona wrote: "Thornyhold by Mary Stewart. A book I have on my shelf so a re-read."I like that book very much, Leona. :)
Here is my 4.52 rounded to 5 stars review of Category Five by Philip Donlay:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Thriller
Good Characterization
Excellent Atmosphere
Intense and Action-Packed
Over-the-top and unrealistic at times, but an entertaining read
Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World by Henry GrabarI was surprised to see this a BOTM in one of my other groups. Urban policies usually aren't key discussion topics even though we're all impacted by the policies adopted by the places where we live. And I tend to hear about parking only if someone is complaining about it. I was thus surprised by how interesting the subject became in this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the one-hour audio of Don Winslow's short story, Dietrich, narrated perfectly by award-winning actor Ed Harris. It's the Son of Sam summer in NYC, 1977, so it's hard to find spare cops to investigate the murder of a homeless man.
My review of DietrichFree for Audible subscribers.
I read Count the Ways
in anticipation of the follow up,
. 4.5 stars rounded up . My review : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Veronica Ruiz Breaks the Bank by Elle CosimanoLabeled as #3.5 by Goodreads, this short story is really a prequel to the Finlay Donovan series. Readers get more insight in Vero's character and learn of the history between her and her childhood crush.

Here is my 3.48 rounded to 3 stars review of Miranda Warning by Heather Day Gilbert:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Mystery / Suspense
Suspenseful and captured my interest, but didn't quite deliver for me due to pacing.
I read How the Light Gets In
. 3.5 stars rounded up. My review : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
A favourite actor, Ed Harris, is the perfect reader for Don Winslow's short story about 5 seventeen-year old boys, planning to go to Oregon to avoid the Vietnam draft.
My review of Oregon
This classic short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce, takes place during the American Civil War and is well worth a read today.
My review of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge with a link to the story
Here is my 4.3 rounded to 4 stars review of A Clean Kill by Steven Konkolyhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Crime Thriller
Riveting, Intense, & Violent
Disquieting and Unsettling at times
Action scenes combined with Great characterization
Well-written plot
First book in the Garrett Mann series
Publication Date: July 1, 2024

this gif is how i felt upon reading the final page. happy to be unhappy. slow, deliberate, like the unfurling of an intricately beaded and embroidered fan. absolutely beautiful and poignant prose from the author. it was at turns exciting, suspenseful, but also navel-gazey in a good way. ruminations on art, love, purpose, fate vs chance.
