The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive #1)[August 16, 2024]
I don't know why people dislike Shallan. I am enjoying her chapters and story arc better than kaladin's. I think people dislike her for cringy humor, but I think it is on purpose. She is deliberately written to be unfunny funny person.
The Raven King - Feyzan, I totally agree that the cringy humor is on purpose where Shallan is concerned. She is supposed to come off as a regular girl, but obviously there is a lot of mental stuff going on with her and she is covering that with humor, which is coming off wrong...
Narilka, That might definitely be the main plot, the question is, is it only humanity we need to save?

I mean, I enjoy the same kind of humor/wordplay when talking with my husband lol. I do not just randomly use it with people I barely know, though, that's for sure 😅

Dad Joke Shallan :D
I actually like Shallan the most in book 1... any dislike I show in book 1 on re-reads is residual run-off from my opinions in book 2-3-4, as her arc plays out (view spoiler) (that's a mega-spoiler, and you really shouldn't read it if you're a first timer)...

Now I feel like I have to reveal a bunch more spoilers to try and make you give Shallan a chance, Ann-Marie:
Gonna say a bunch of stuff in spoilers, for Ann-Marie, mostly for book 2 stuff, but probably later stuff too, to try and give some context: (view spoiler)

I couldn't have said it better, Iain. As a person who struggles with bouts of depression because of PTSD, it gets too much to read Kaladin's down moments too... Shallan's coping mechanisms just become self destructive eventually and I can see how this could be bothersome....
Choko wrote: "Narilka, That might definitely be the main plot, the question is, is it only humanity we need to save?"No idea. Not enough info. 900+ pages so far and not enough info lol (view spoiler) This is a foundational book, as in laying the foundation for the rest of the series so that things can actually happen. Unless it's really long "slice of life" and my expectations have been completely off this whole time.
I am not sure about the old king, but the current one does for sure. I think this is what is making him so paranoid...
Alot of the biggest stuff, in regards to that, is saved for book 3 with Dalinar reveals, and book 4/5, I think... it's a throughline of the arc...
The Raven King wrote: "I don't know why people dislike Shallan. I am enjoying her chapters and story arc better than kaladin's. It makes me pity her rather than like her.
Timelord Iain wrote: "Alot of the biggest stuff, in regards to that, is saved for book 3 with Dalinar reveals, and book 4/5, I think... it's a throughline of the arc..."So is Book 2 also going to frustrate for a thousand pages? Is it more foundation laying? I find all the world building interesting but not enough to make the book unputdownable.
I was not mad, you know I don't mind spoilers plus it was my own fault for being click happy! I absolutely see what you are saying about Kaladin pushing it with the dark but so far he is my favorite, I hope Shallon does grow on me as I continue :)

I'd say things start happening, in book 2... things are set in motion by the end of book 1... the status quot of the past 5 years is broken...

I will likely be starting book 2 early same as this one. due to the length and also because I want to know what happens next! :)
Timelord Iain wrote: "I'd say things start happening, in book 2... "Thanks for the clarification. That works for me then.
Ch 62 was pretty awesome. (view spoiler)

The Raven King wrote: "I don't know why people dislike Shallan. I am enjoying her chapters and story arc better than kaladin's. I think people dislike her for cringy humor, but I think it is on purpose. She is deliberate..."I'm in agreement with you there The Raven King~
I finished. That was a frustrating read with a terrific ending. I'm in for book 2 to see what happens.(view spoiler)

There is some mental stuff going on with her.

Shallan in book 1 is kinda bland imo, but I love the things Sanderson does with her in the later books. (view spoiler)
Timelord Iain wrote: "The Raven King wrote: "I don't know why people dislike Shallan. I am enjoying her chapters and story arc better than kaladin's. I remember being annoyed by Shallan a lot - but you're right that's not the case for Book 1. In fact, I was/am quite intrigued by her character and specially the passion for art/sketches. I love what Sanderson did with her character arc in the later books, but at the same time I find the character itself grew to be annoying.
Kaladin has been a favorite from Book 1 - Book 4. That hasn't changed for me, through the highs and lows. I even have a tattoo of the "Life before ...." LOL.
Choko wrote: "I think I am like Marie, when it comes to massive tomes. I love the slow building of the story..."Me too! And I'm loving this re-read. I've barely read 150 pages as I started last night and kept getting lost in replays of the book 1-book 4 storyline in my brain. I'll have to switch it a bit off so I can finish the book :D
Mitali, the problems of a re-reader:))) If we are here, that means we like it enough to come back to it, and that is awesome:)))
Coming in super late to the party! I'm enjoying this book a lot, but it's my first time reading so I'm taking it slow and wanted to get fully immersed before jumping into the chat. Now that I'm 75% in, I guess I'll take bite :)Chapter 57 (view spoiler)
Looking forward to getting more involved in this discussion now and speculating with you all!
Ashley, I think this is the second strengest part of these books. The first being the world building and the second, the complexity of the characters, be it protagonists or antagonists. They all have flaws, they all have ultimately understandable reasons for the actions they take, no matter if they make sense or are completely unreasonable... Brandon is so good at plotting the characters far ahead and eventually we can turn back and see how he has been guiding us to the upcoming resolutions... I will wait for you to finish and see what questions you still have, and we can get into those:)
Just chiming in to say I have finished the book and absolutely loved it but I am now on vacation so probably will only write my final thoughts after I return.

I've read just a few chapters since posting last night and I already have so much new information to fuel my theories, and of course, more questions haha
