The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive #1)[August 16, 2024]
I just want to check, I should read the first 3 in Mistborn in preparation for these? Nothing else essential? I am almost through The Well of Ascension now and should be able to get through the next before starting this mega-chonker.....
I read the first in Mistborn before I read these. I never finished because I hated Vin so much. I didn’t see a huge connection but probably because I didn’t finish.
The biggest connection across series, across books, is Warbreaker... with more minor connections to Mistborn / Elantris / etc...
By book 4, there are connections to everything, and you should probably read Stormlight 1-4 and everything else before Mistborn 7....
I honestly don't even know what to say about reading order on short notice, anymore, because everything is becoming so connected, and reading order will affect cross-series spoilers...

It's probably safest bet to read in publication order. Here is a good list and some other reading order options: https://www.tlbranson.com/cosmere-rea...
Yeah reading more than 1 more chonker book before this one is not happening so I'll just go with it with reading the first 3 Mistborn and will consider different reading orders when I re-read in the future! Thanks :)
There’s def a Mistborn connection, but I don’t think you’ll miss that much if you don’t read it first. I second reading the books in publication order.
Diana Stormblessed wrote: "There’s def a Mistborn connection, but I don’t think you’ll miss that much if you don’t read it first. I second reading the books in publication order."Ooh! That's exciting! I do love the Mistborn world! I still need to dive into more Sanderson~
I have 3-5 books to read before I start this chonker, definitely 3 but maybe the remaining 2 depending on how quickly I get through those.
This will be my next audio. I have to finish The Magicians which I’m loving but my eye read of Dragonlance is feeling so right.
I'm not sure I'm gonna have time for this... I'll definitely be here to comment alot, tho, even if I don't read...
I only have 1 book to read between now and Way of Kings, so I’m hoping I can start day one. Super excited to reread the books that got me back into reading!
Ann-Marie wrote: "I have 3-5 books to read before I start this chonker, definitely 3 but maybe the remaining 2 depending on how quickly I get through those."I also have at least 3 eye reads to finish, but no matter what I am joining this at the starting date. I have been stalling on this series and the rest of the Cosmere for too long...
I'm new to fantasy, read the Mistborn series, and fell in love with Sanderson. I loved how he built the world, the magic system and characters. I read about a quarter of "The Way of Kings", but found I was a little overwhelmed and had trouble keeping track of where it was going. I can't wait to give it another try as part of a group.
Starting today :D Reading this on Kindle though I also have a regular physical copy so I can check out the art since my Kindle's screen is tiny.

Reading the book and living the experience is step 1… step 2-3-4 is catching the cameos and foreshadowing… I’ll post some wiki links from home in the future to where you can see all the chapter epigraphs in one place instead of needing to jump around your book…
In other Sanderson books the epigraphs are chapter-similar quotes and broadsheets/etc… in Stormlight Archive, sometimes it’s a correspondence between 2 people doled out one sentence at a time and holds more meaning all at once… also, sometimes you go back and re-read epigraphs and realize they were spoilers/clues to events in future books… fun stuff for those that want to dig deep…

I've finished the prelude, prologue and first chapter. Possible Cosmere connections. (view spoiler)
Quick Prelude question too (view spoiler)

I might not be much faster. I only go fast through the audio reads but I am quite a slow reader... It depends on how much free time I will have and how much of it will I dedicate to reading. Lately my eye reading has been quite down. Only about 40 pages per day on average... Even though I could do 200+ per day if I get obsessed :D

Well... the important thing to remember, is the Cosmere is unified... The Shards (Preservation and Ruin from Mistborn as the least spoilery examples) are just 1/16th of Adonai / Adonalsium... Shards of God... each Shard bestows a world/solar system with magic systems, and/or/but as part of a larger whole, all the magic systems are gonna feel a bit similar and display similar magics in different ways... each has it's unique features, too, but you can kinda assume a bunch will find a way to fly somehow :D
Each Shard also has a number associated with it that plays into the Magic system...
Mistborn's numbers were 16 and 1, iirc, and there are 16 magical metals (altho many were lost/hidden/forgotten, until the second and third trilogies, also alot are alloys that were hard to make in a pre-industrial setting)...
Stormlight Archive's number is 10... 10 books, 10 orders, 10 ability pairs... I think it's other number is 9?... and not sure about the 3rd number (view spoiler)

The question: (view spoiler)
re: Prologue question: If I remember correctly, I think we get that Prologue scene from various perspectives throughout the series--maybe even in different prologues? It is definitely a, if not the pivotal event in recent history--and each revisit to the moment adds more and more layers... so even if you don't remember first time through it'll come back around.Super looking forward to this but going to run late.
As I said in my spoiler, I think they were talking about Prelude not Prologue, altho I answered both…
Timelord Iain wrote: "As I said in my spoiler, I think they were talking about Prelude not Prologue, altho I answered both…"I was referring to the Prelude. I'll edit my comment so it's more obvious.

And here's the epigraph link: https://coppermind.net/wiki/The_Way_o...
There's some spoilers on there, if you read the 1-3 sentences above each table... so don't do that...

I always consider Prelude & Prologue to be synonyms. These books don't have both, right? I don't think I've ever seen a book have both... What exactly is the difference?

Way of Kings has both... the Prelude is (view spoiler)... then the Prologue is the Gavilar segment you mentioned...
In most cases, I think the terms are interchangeable, it's just that here there are literally both... both take place before the main part of the story... but the Prologue is only a few years before the main story and the Prelude is alot more...

I’m still debating whether I’ll reread it for the 4th time or skip straight to book 5. I’ll probably still reread it but I’ll be late. I don’t know if I can handle a tomb this size right now. Will wait for my mood to shift.
The first time I listened to this, I didn't speed books up nearly as much as I do now... took me most of a week... now, it's what?... 18-19hrs at 3x speed?... doable in ~2 days, depending how much I nolife it...

I forget his name and I wanted to look out for him.

I was trying to get through part 2 today but I decided to take a nap lol Through ch26 (view spoiler)In conclusion about this so far, it is going fairly quickly and is not painful so that is a plus! I was listening while writing this so I am partway through chapter 27, I listened most of the day since early afternoon and I still have a bit under 14 hours left.....I will be happy if I finish this Tuesday, that is my goal :)
I started this weekend and I'm through Part 1. I know that means I'm way behind anyone else that's started the book at all.But it's a reread for me so leisurely pace works. It's more a refresher for me to get caught up in time for Book 5.
Has anyone signed up for Sanderson's new kickstarter, for his Cosmere RPG?I pledged at the level where I'll get the Stormlight and Mistborn World Guides.....I don't really have time or players to get a game going but I do want these books for the reference material.
