Hi, all.

Here we are, as in olden days -- er -- looking into the New Year and wondering what read would best begin 2024. Should it be a long book or a short one, a mystery or a spy thriller or a police procedural or an s.f. police procedural solving a mystery about spies, should it be hard-boiled or cozy, noir or not, a winter book or a summer book, set in a city or a rural thriller?

You decide!

The field is wide open, you can nominate anything that appeals to you, though the usual disclaimers apply:
1. do NOT nominate your own book
2. if your nomination tops the poll you will lead the discussion. Obviously you shouldn't nominate a book if you don't wish to participate.
3. also, please check the group's bookshelf to make sure we haven't read your nomination in the last couple of years.

You have until December 11 to nominate, after that I'll set up a poll.

Enjoy, all.

CBRetriever | 2551 comments The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson

book one in the Longmire series (it's not exactly like the TV series; it's better).

Walt Longmire, sheriff of Wyoming's Absaroka County, knows he's got trouble when Cody Pritchard is found dead. Two years earlier, Cody and three accomplices had been given suspended sentences for raping a Northern Cheyenne girl. Is someone seeking vengeance? Longmire faces one of the more volatile and challenging cases in his twenty-four years as sheriff and means to see that revenge, a dish that is best served cold, is never served at all.

Nigella [Semi-Hiatus] (usershow132795844-nigella) A short, cozy beachside mystery book, yum 😋

Hey, folks, if you're willing to lead the discussion of it, by all means offer up a specific title!

Ted Keen | 26 comments This may be totally off-the-wall (meaning not appropriately thriller, crime or mystery group read), but how about The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride? It is getting rave reviews everywhere!
(Feel free to nix this nomination if it doesn’t fit.)

I would definitely be up for that one.

It's about Thanksgiving leftovers, right?

Linda_G (yhgail) | 15 comments I am currently reading Reykjavík A Crime Story by Ragnar Jónasson by Ragnar Jónasson and Katrín Jakobsdóttir

Icelandic crime novel - Nordic Noir? ( I am not certain what makes a novel "noir"). Set in 1956 and present times.

I am not sure about this novel for January. But it might be considered for later in the year. There is something a little odd about this novel. I've read these authors before - and this has something unusual. Might be interesting to discuss.

I have not finished it. The "surprise" put me "on hold" until I thought about it. I will continue soon.

It’s received excellent reviews. I’ve had a copy for a couple of months, but haven’t started it yet. A group read would be motivating 😉

Geez, I lost track of time!

Before the day is over, I'll have the poll up. In the meantime, I'm closing this thread.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks.
