Alan | 2 comments This is a series of at least 3 books, but I have read only the first one.

It is a science fiction with a realistic scientific description of the events and technologies. I cannot recall any mysterious events or technologies that could not be explained using modern science.
A distant human colony gets isolated from the rest of humanity, because a wormhole passage of a kind which humans use for inter star travels suddenly disappears. They come to conclusion that it was a supernova explosion on the other side of the passage.
After several years or decades the passage reappears and a starship arrives through it - everything was killed on board including bacteria due to the supernova radiation.
The colonists realize that there is a war on the other side, develop a defense against the radiation and send a space ship to investigate.
Upon arrival to the nearest surviving star system they participate in a space battle which includes chasing a fleeing enemy ship and saving the human colony. There the crew gets information that the humans have got contacted another race and have been at war with them for many years.

I do not know when the book was written, but not later than 2005.
