SOLVED. Family drama - two brothers go in a cave, one of them jumps into the water and dies. [s]

I read this book around 7 years ago, its a family drama written by a mans POV who has a brother that is loved more by his family. The brothers name is somewhat like a dog name, Rex or Box or something. The first half mentions bits of their lives, in the second half two brothers and one girl friend of them go in a cave, Rex (?) Jumps into the water but its a water type that makes you drown somehow. Rex dies, when the other brother leaves and tells what happened to the family the mom punches him so hard he cannot speak for weeks because of jaw issues. She tells him he should have died instead. My mom gave away my books and now I have no idea how to find the book name, please help.
