I've seen many sources that say The Catcher in the Rye takes place in 1949, and having read it recently I think that is accurate. It does not explicitly have a year but based on the publication year and WW2 references, 1949 seems right.
I am personally reading a book that only partially takes place in 1942, the year I needed, and it's good enough for me.
