I'm really debating reading the books... I loved the show

I never read the books however I watched the show(I stopped watching before the last season ended). When I first watched it, I was a hard Damon stan but then when I rewatched again(stopped at the very last season cause I wasn’t a huge fan of where the story was going) and I changed to Stefan. Not saying one or the other was bad but it’s crazy how it changed.
I liked Salem's Lot by Stephen King. That is the book that turned me on to him/
