TimeFliesAway | 121 comments As an author myself, I recommend checking out baby names sites that have meanings of the names listed. At least I (and a lot of other authors) choose the name based on the meaning. That meaning could be foreshadowing (for example when it's fantasy and the character has powers that are revealed later on) or just describe their personality.
(Sites like these: https://www.parents.com/unique-baby-n... )

It's also recommended to choose names based on the ethnicity of the character, unless they're very average american. But – if they are african or asian or mexican or any other underrated nationality, it's good to have a name from that country as well.

Again, depends on the story though. If the parents of that character fled their birth country and don't want to have anything to do with it anymore, they likely wouldn't give their child a name that is very popular there or sounds like it's exactly from there. (E.g. if they're from japanese but don't want to have anything to do with Japan, they wouldn't give them a very japanese name that sounds like it came straight out of an anime.)

Dave | 34 comments My idea for creating character names: I like creating names that use the first name of one friend of mine, and the last name of a different friend of mine. Like these, created using names of real people:

Tasha Jinks
Mia Rumble
Bailey Bock
Wendy Welbaum
Anastasia Lager

Max Beaver
Diego Skiff
Armen Eno
Arturo Pick
