20.4 - Golden Oldies - Joop's Task: Golden Oldies

For the past challenges I have read may so-called "golden oldies". This assignment is therefore all about old age. Choose one of the following options.
Required: state the option.

Option A: Read a book where 1 or more main characters is of old age. This should be clear from the book description or otherwise be made clear.
Requirement: If the character's age is not evident from the GR description, provide a reference.

Option B: Read a book published after the author's 65th birthday.
Requirement: State the author's year of birth and the book's original year of publication.

How are you defining old age?

65+ would be fine. However sometimes exceptions could be made. For example Miss Marple (Agatha Christie series) is for sure of old age but her age is nowhere mentioned. Sometimes people are living in a retirement home without an age mentioned.

Apple | 391 comments For option B: Year of the Monkey was first published in 2019. Patti Smith was born in 1946, which means she was 73 at time of publishing.

✅ Approved

Deborah | 1667 comments So fantasy books, where the characters can be hundreds of years old, does that count as "old"?

I'm looking at The Innocent Sleep Tybalt has been around since around mid 17th century.

KSMary | 1181 comments Would you approve Mother-Daughter Murder Night for Opt A.
In the author's bio on GR is this reference: My first novel, MOTHER-DAUGHTER MURDER NIGHT, is a New York Times bestselling mystery about a grandma, single mom, and teenage girl who come together to solve the murder of a naturalist who washes up in the Monterey Bay.

✅I hadn't thought about that yet, but as far as I'm concerned "approved"

✅ I would almost say "to close to call", but since it is all about the fun of searching and reading books "Approved”.

Marie-Anne | 950 comments GR does not list birthdays for most authors. Is there another acceptable good source?

Many of them have a Wikipedia page which lists a birthdate.

As per Robin P, or f.e. Webpage author or publisher.

The Library of Congress Authorities, used by catalogers, sometimes has a birthdate not easily found elsewhere.

Šárka Vomáčková | 8 comments hello everyone, I am new here and I need advice. I read somewhere, that for some events, you need some kind of ticket... probably. I am not sure. Do I need them for this challenge or can I only send my result?

message 21: by Kathy KS (new)

Kathy KS | 2378 comments Perhaps you are thinking of "claiming a ticket." You can claim tickets for reading golden oldies (older than 1950-51?), nonfiction, or Big books (depends on how many pages for how many tickets).

These are NOT required, but up to you whether you want to. These "tickets" will be used for drawings about who can devise some of next season's challenge.

You'll need to review the rules/faq postings to learn the details. If you also read over other readers' completed tasks you will see how they do this.

it might help to look at some of the completed tasks posts to see how others write these up and claim their "tickets" you can always copy the way someone else does their posting. That is how I started

You will want to get a Readerboard name if you haven't already done so. Here is the link https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

In Moll Flanders, Moll tells the story of her life at age 69, from birth to this point. would this work?
