Robin Hood | 26 comments Okay, I'm curious, if there is a song written in a book, do you read it all the way? I'm reading thg Ballad of songbirds and snakes and there are a lot of songs, but I personally do read them.

Robin Hood | 26 comments And if so, how do you read it? Plain, or do you come up with a melody?

Diane I would normally skip them!🤔

message 6: by Karen (new)

Karen (rhyta) If I am listening to the audio book, usually the narrator will do the honors but I don't think I really get a melody in my head when looking at the words on the page.

Greta | 3 comments I usually skip it.
Like in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes I read it of course💕 but in The Hobbit I didn’t (and the great amount of songs was one of the reasons I DNFd The Lord of The Rings).

Amanda’s counting the days 🐾 (ajosephine) | 30 comments That’s too funny! I was not into all those songs. I bought “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” when it first came out and completely forgot about it….until it was time to see the movie. I knew I had to read it in the back of my mind, but I just didn’t and essentially did a speed-read before I went with my younger cousins. I skimmed the songs, but if you haven’t seen the movie, some of them are thematically important.

message 27: by summer (new)

summer | 1 comments Unless it is really long and sometimes the fonts for the poems may be difficult and small then I skip them. Otherwise, I always read them.

Haha, the songs are something I really love about The Lord of the Rings. I think they make the world seem so much deeper and more authentic. Some of them are quite funny, others just pretty epic. But I do understand if you didn't like them. Though, you can just skip them, so they shouldn't keep you from reading the book, it's amazing

message 31: by hazelnut (new)

hazelnut | 2 comments I read the songs, I think they add to the ambiance and depth of a story (at least if they're good xd). And I sometimes add a melody, but usually it's a really simple one (cause I'm don't have musical talent). But I love to listen to musicians who set songs from books to music. As you were talking of "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" I can recommend Maiah Wynne's interpretations of the Songs

message 32: by Janine (new)

Janine Ballard (httpwwwdearauthorcom) | 108 comments I liked the songs in The Hobbit a whole lot (esp the one about smashing the plates), but Lord of the Rings lost me at Tom Bombadill's song. That was literally where I put the book down and I never got back to them.

message 33: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Hop | 3 comments I skip them, especially when they are quoted at the beginning of the chapter. If the lyrics turn out to be crucial for story development I might go back to read them.

Bellaaa (jeremiah's version!) Nope. Absolutely skip it. no matter what. songs aren't worth my time reading if I can finish the book faster
