MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Although it isn't posted here yet as currently reading, I just started Pioneer Children on the Journey West. It is fascinating. Much of it is written accounts in letters, diaries, or memoirs of children who traveled west pre Civil War.

Also reading a Margaret Coel Father O'Malley mystery, Wife of Moon.

Audio books can be great, especially while on motor trips through long stretches of ranch land and prairie. The reader is super important. I gave up on audio books at home as some noise or another from either outside or inside is always getting in the way,
and I am not the type who ends up moving around to do something at the same time.

I just finished a road trip that was 12-hours one-way. I listened to Charles Martin's Murphy Shepherd series, Seraphina Nova Glass' The Vanishing Hour, and started another audiobook. It helps keep me awake and engaged. I have actually started not taking phone calls (via hands free), so I can listen to audiobooks on road trips. It is like my guarded time.

Alma Crawford (1730661128) | 4 comments I forced myself on the computer today to catch up a bit. I've been sick for four weeks now, I'm under doctor's care so this cold should give up. I've been reading "THE NIGHT CIRCUS" It was recommended by a few members and it's very interesting. Granted my attention has been wandering a bit so I have a few shorter books on my reading stack that I'm switching into now and again,
I can't wait to feel like myself again, I'm behind on my reading, answering notes from friends, and a few reviews. If anyone requires a good read, I'm moving one to "The Great Divide" by Christina Enriquez. It's for my local book club, in a few weeks. Stay well I miss being here more often. Alma

The Eagle and The Hart
by Helen Castor. I used to be able to read more. Getting difficult with aging eyes. Try to use audio books when practical. Just not the same as holding a book.

Ruth, you might like A Walk in the Park, a true account of and about the Grand Canyon. That is, if you can stand the author and his side kick's absolute stupidity in situations they should have totally known better than to get themselves into.
The history of the canyon and those that have explored it is fascinating for the most part.
For me it is also disturbing the some people have made the canyon a mini-god of sorts.

Rosie | 46 comments After having read (listened) to all the Outlander books where each book might be 40-60 hours long. I am now reading (listening) to all the ones I have on my list. Like the Jeffrey Deaver Series that the Tracker TV series is based on. In addition I just finished the 25th book in the Joe Picket series by C.J. Box called Battle Mountain.

If you couldn't tell I like series.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I watch a movie or a TV Series and they say, based on the book, I write it down.

message 269: by Rita (new)

Rita | 9 comments Right now, I'm reading The Consequence of Anna for my book club. I am about half-way through it, but I still don't know what to think of it. It involves a character with mental illness issues, but I'm not sure she is the only character who has them! Time will tell. I recently finished Happiness for Beginners, which was an okay romance with an interesting twist, but the cover said it had been made into a movie that was shown on Netflix. I decided to watch it, but I thought the movie was horrible and did not really follow the book--in fact, I thought it deviated from the best parts. I don't know why they bothered if they were going to ruin the story.

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments I've been a big fan of Stephanie Barron's Jane Austin mysteries.
In my opinion she really pulled it off, with interesting plots and yet maintaining the flavor of the time, the culture, and staying true to actual events in the live of Austin and British history.

Jane Austin died very young, in her early 40's, so Barron has had to wrap up the series with Jane and the Final Mystery, which I am currently reading.

Geraldine | 134 comments We are a great country, and I want to think we will come through this time, but, there are mass deportations, and I know from personal friends, that some of our neighbors are afraid to leave their homes for fear that, for any and every reason, they will be detained and sent god knows where. Businesses throughout our country thrived by employing immigrants, legal or not/it didn’t matter. Now they’re being rounded up . This is happening, whether you’re aware of it or not.

Katarina (kbredberg) | 19 comments Ruth I know. My brother-in-law moped in 2006 to California (Los Angeles). We stayed with them in 2007. We learned about the Californian weather for sure. A surprise was San Fransisco: cold in July. But the fires in Hollywood area recently seemed horrific. The floods in Texas. Weather in Arizona must be very hot. Lately in Sweden it was very hot: 30 degrees Celsius. In Spain and in Portugal it was 46 degrees Celsius.

Rosie | 46 comments I have been reading the series by Tony Hillerman that the Dark Winds TV series is based on. It was written in the 70s, 80s & early 90s. It gives a lot of insight into the Navaho way of life, beliefs and mind set. Also, this series was started 50 years ago so the style is bit different from something written currently.
