Carmen - the title of yours sounds interesting, and it's on Kindle Unlimited, so I may pick it up. I'm afraid The Murder of Mr. Ma is a DNF (did not finish) for me. I hung in longer than usual because it's an interesting concept, but found myself disliking the protagonist, and disliking the book. Not saying it's a bad book AT ALL. The writing is largely quite good, but I need to be invested in the main character and care about them to keep reading.

This book is on my to read list. Thanks much for the tip.

I am a great admirer of Victor Davis Hanson, who has such tremendous insight into history and what significance and lessons it has for us today.
One of the tragedies is, humanity never learns the lessons for long.

I'm a great admirer of Victor Davis Hanson, too. He is a great patriot.

Geraldine | 134 comments He is way over my head, but I’m watching Victor Davis Hanson on YouTube.

message 161: by Randall (new)

Randall Moore (goodreadscomrandall_moore) | 42 comments Victor Davis Hanson also has a podcast on iHeart, TuneIn, and Apple. It’s titled the Victor Davis Hanson Show. I particularly enjoy his remembrances of his family’s history growing up on a farm in rural Fresno County where he still lives

message 162: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine | 134 comments Thanks ☺️ I’ll look him up

message 163: by Susan (last edited Jul 06, 2024 07:11AM) (new)

Susan (wife2abadge) I just finished Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. It was rather terrifying to read about all of the bad things that happen to our body and brain when we don't get enough sleep.

I just started Holly by Stephen King and There There by Tommy Orange.

My dad and I both really enjoyed it.

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments Geraldine wrote: "He is way over my head, but I’m watching Victor Davis Hanson on YouTube."

He is deep alright! I find it easier to read copies of his lectures at universities and colleges such as Hillsdale than to read his books.

He’s a very intelligent fellow with great insight and common sense. I guess that’s why he hasn’t run for office.

Lisa Hannon (lisachannon) | 17 comments Started and finished re-reading Jennifer Crusie's Fast Women yesterday. Trying to decide whether to re-read her Maybe This Time or look for something similar. Her books are lighter, always filled with humor, and while oriented around a romance, seem more realistic than the genre as a whole.

Carmen | 34 comments I’m reading Not My Father’s Son a memoir, by Alan Cumming.

I love MOST of Sager's thrillers. I just finished Middle of the Night. Did you read it?

message 173: by Suzanne Lopes (new)

Suzanne Lopes | 1 comments I’m reading a book from Charlie Donlea called The Suicide House. It has been hooked. I literally cannot put the book down but unfortunately I work so I have to put it down. As soon as I get home from work. I jump in the shower, eat a quick dinner and back to the book. Every single book that this author has written is AMAZING!! If you read one of his books you’ll see what I’m talking about.. 😊 📕 📖 📚 😍

I've read it. I gave it 4 stars. It was good but I don't think quite up to Home Before Dark.

My review is as follows:
An interesting read although I felt as though at times it was a bit slow and chatty. I did like how it all worked out (without giving any spoilers).

I felt right at home with the setting of a suburban cul-de-sac in New Jersey. Fortunately the one I live in the middle of has far less excitement going on than the Hemlock Circle of the story.

The story begins with 10 year old Ethan and Billy who are best friends and enjoy camping out in Ethan's backyard in a tent and sleeping bags on Friday nights. On one July night Billy disappears and Ethan was sleeping and can't remember if he woke up and was aware of what happened to Billy. He didn't just wander off because there is a slice cut in the tent from the outside. So someone took Billy! But what happened then?

MaryJo Dawson | 99 comments The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry looks interesting. It was offered in e-book format at a very reasonable price so I decided to risk it.
The ratings are very good and apparently it has been quite popular - not that popularity necessarily means a good read for me.
Otherwise enjoying George Bellair's British series from the golden age of the mid-twentieth century. Inspector Littlejohn and his assistance Cromwell are well developed characters and the plots well thought out.

Luz | 23 comments You have been very busy. I’m just watching a movie on Netflix. It’s about 3 seniors that do robberies. It’s name The Green Gloves ladies. It’s a comedy.

Share how you like it.
I haven't started the Unlikely Pilgrimage yet, and actually it takes me quite a while to get through books because I read a couple at one time.

message 186: by Luz (new)

Luz | 23 comments I love thrillers.

message 187: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine | 134 comments It’s subtitled. “A mid century mystery “. It’s set in a southern town in the 1960’s and revolves around a young female reporter solving a couple of murders in their town .

message 188: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wrynmac) | 5 comments I'm currently re-reading Fahrenheit 451. I tried the audiobook but the narrator, Tim Robbins, just was soooo distracting, so I pulled out my physical copy and it still amazes me how Ray Bradbury saw so much of what was coming!!

message 189: by Susan (new)

Susan (wife2abadge) I'm reading Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar -- quite good so far, and a thriller called The Girl Who Disappeared Twice by Andrea Kane, which is not so good.

message 190: by Luz (new)

Luz | 23 comments I’m not a fan of Audiobooks but I’m a bookworm. Love reading and like to hear
What others are reading.

message 191: by Carmen (new)

Carmen | 34 comments Luz, I’m reading 2 books which I rarely do! One is a memoir by Alan Cumming called Not My Father’s Son and a Thriller by Ann Rule called The I-5 Killer based on a true story!

message 192: by Luz (new)

Luz | 23 comments Wow Carmen you are really catching up on reading. Keep it up.

message 193: by Joan (new)

Joan DiGiovanni | 3 comments I am currently reading, What Have You Done by Shari Lapena.

message 194: by Luz (new)

Luz | 23 comments I just ordered three books. It end with us, mother daughter, daughter other, and the third I really don’t remember the name.

message 195: by Susan (new)

Susan (wife2abadge) I'm still reading Martyr! by Akbar, but also started Running the Rift by Naomi Benaron. It's about a runner in Rwanda during the Tutsi and Hutu conflict who's trying to reach the Olympics. The Girl Who Disappeared Twice was just as disappointing as it seemed it was going to be. :-D
