As long as it's not three crime novels at the same time, I don't get mixed up. I usually read a crime novel, one or two autobiographies and a regular novel.

I admire those who can read multiple books at once.
However I make exceptions with ARCs or E-books. I'm currently reading an ARC and when I'm at work it's just easier to read on my phone than carry a physical book with me.

It's like tv shows... yeah, most of the time I'm bingeing one show, but I have other shows that I'll take a break with.

That said, I try to have every 4th book require critical thinking and be on an important topic, whether historical, political, or philosophical. These can be daunting to read all the way through, especially if the work is more than 700 pages, dense, or sad. (Examples: Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel's Targeted Assassinations, American Prometheus, and My Fourth Time, We Drowned) In that case, I'll switch up in order to help me get through the heavy read.

Particularly if they are the same Genre.

I have one book in my car for traffic jams, one book in my purse for hair dresser and doc appts, a third book downstairs for our TV-free afternoon once a week and one book that I'm reading before falling asleep in the bed room.

Now I have one book on each device! Including old phones that I use as kindles and library audios, I have two of those. My iPad and my phone. I use libraries and kindle unlimited to get my books.
I generally limit myself to 3 books, unless a library hold comes in. 8*)

Barbara, I am guilty of mislaying books too!
I like to read in multiples, usually 4-5 at a time.

Did you try putting heavier books on a thick pillow?
I'm near-sighted and can easily read books like "Coming Home" by Rosamunde Pilcher (1200 pages, hardcover) as long as I put them on top of a pillow on my thighs.

but something inside me finds it absolutely blasphemous to read more than one book at a time
