Homer | 15 comments I'm interested in multiple books at the same time soemtiems, but I feel like it breaks the immersion? What are your thoughts

message 2: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments I read 3 or 4 books at the same time. Life is too short to just read one book.

message 3: by JackieBeau (new)

JackieBeau in a bad reading slump | 35 comments I read three books at a time! My kids ask me don’t you get mixed up with the characters and storylines ? I say no ! 🤣

message 4: by Allan (new)

Allan Lindsay (mcdood2712) | 2 comments I have many books on the go at anyone time. Some books are slow burners so I dip in and out until they grip me then I read until the end.

message 5: by Rajae (new)

Rajae Hamdaoui | 1 comments I always read 2 or 3 books from different genres

message 6: by Lady (new)

Lady Dazy (mrscsmith) I would rather finish a book before I start the next one. However, if I am not enjoying a book I will leave it unfinished and then start another. Sometimes I go back to an unfinished book to give it another chance.

Mary Elizabeth | 2 comments I usually have an audiobook in the car, a different book, on my phone and another on my tablet and regular book going at the same time.

message 8: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 130 comments I usually read at least two books at as time and sometimes more depending on if I feel like need a different type of book fix.

message 9: by Laura (new)

Laura (goodreadscomlaudun7613) | 1 comments I read multiple books at one time. Physical books, audio book, and an ebook.

As long as it's not three crime novels at the same time, I don't get mixed up. I usually read a crime novel, one or two autobiographies and a regular novel.

message 11: by Tania (new)

Tania | 3 comments sometimes... most times, I have a few books going at the same time, 2 usually

message 12: by Kaiden (new)

Kaiden Caudle | 9 comments Depends on the day but I switch back and forth. I am a mood reader so I usually have one book on my kindle and one physical book that I read at one time!

message 13: by Melanie (new)

Melanie C | 2 comments I need to read one at a time to focus and not get my characters confused. But I read fairly quickly if I’m interested in the book…

message 14: by Lilith (new)

Lilith Jane | 45 comments Honestly I need to read one book and only that one. I have a problem with mixing up the plots and imagining the looks of characters if I read like 3 books at the same time.
I admire those who can read multiple books at once.

However I make exceptions with ARCs or E-books. I'm currently reading an ARC and when I'm at work it's just easier to read on my phone than carry a physical book with me.

message 15: by Emilly (new)

Emilly I prefer to read one book at a time, but if I'm taking too long to finish it or if it's boring but I don't wanna dnf it, I'll start another one.

message 16: by always (new)

always reading ashley | 4 comments Im a mood reader; I usually have a handful I read, and they are usually different genres.

message 17: by Syed (new)

Syed (kingsyed) | 1 comments now, i usually have multiple books that im reading, usually of varying genres. Right now, I have some historical epic, horror anthology and realistic fiction.

message 18: by andie (new)

andie I usually don't take more than 3 days to read a book, so usually one book has my main focus, but I always have 2-4 that I'm technically currently reading. I like to at least have an audiobook and a physical or ebook going at the same time. I'm also a mood reader, so I like to have lighter and heavier/more complicated books to choose from.

It's like tv shows... yeah, most of the time I'm bingeing one show, but I have other shows that I'll take a break with.

message 19: by Awjtf (new)

Awjtf I read many books at one time! I need the variety! Sometimes if the book is so good, I will read it until I finish it.

message 20: by Maya (new)

Maya | 23 comments For me it depends. I am a pretty fast reader if I want to read, so there's usually no need for multiple books at the same time, but I do have stories that I need more time with, and those I usually read like one or two chapters before bed, which means I usually have a book that I read during daytime and one I read in bed. Also I can read multiple books if they're different mediums (physical book, ebook, audio book) and while I usually do not mix up books in one medium, I can and will absolutely mix up book series, even if I already have all the books of the series lying around.

message 21: by Dee (last edited Nov 08, 2023 02:34PM) (new)

Dee Turner | 17 comments When I'm REALLY engaged in a novel, I read all the way through--sometimes even failing to pause for sleep! (Examples: The House Witch, the Lady Hardcastle series, and Bookshops and Bonedust)

That said, I try to have every 4th book require critical thinking and be on an important topic, whether historical, political, or philosophical. These can be daunting to read all the way through, especially if the work is more than 700 pages, dense, or sad. (Examples: Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel's Targeted Assassinations, American Prometheus, and My Fourth Time, We Drowned) In that case, I'll switch up in order to help me get through the heavy read.

message 22: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Lindorff | 17 comments I'm usually bookagamous but I've got 3 going right now: ebook, Audible and old book I read in Jr High that I read while waiting for dog to finish his dinner

message 23: by Mary (new)

Mary I usually read only one book at a time, but have made an exception to that rule a time or two. Right now my profile shows I am "currently reading" 2 books, but I'm actually reading only one of them. (I had one ready to start when another expected book I need to review came in from the publisher.)

message 24: by Lilly (new)

Lilly Edling Bounce from book to book usually reading 3-4 at a time. I gotta switch between genres especially when reading bigger books or books with heavier topics. I need that comedy to keep me in the right head space.

message 25: by Yasmin (new)

Yasmin Zarrabi I may just be obsessive and linear minded but it's not so much that I cannot read multiple books at once, I just feel that the reading experience would be less pure 🤣 Truly just silly since most of you guys read 3 books at once. However if I am reading non fiction informative books that don't have a storyline necessarily, I'll keep this going for a long time to continuously soak up knowledge.

message 26: by Harrietawrites (new)

Harrietawrites (harrieta) | 7 comments okay I do bounce between books but the thing is I only do that when I find the story a but dragging otherwise I finish it as soon as I can and go to the other book.

message 27: by Megan (new)

Megan Johnston | 2 comments I have to finish a book before I start a new one, I can’t read two books at the same time or I’ll start confusing one for the other

message 28: by Gary (new)

Gary Allen, PhD (gallen6) | 21 comments Just one at a time - I like to keep reading nice and easy.

message 29: by Ri (new)

Ri | 5 comments one at a time. I love giving my 100 % attention to one rather than moving on to another.

message 30: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1 comments I usually read one at a time. Sometimes though I will have two going. Yesterday for example I realized I left my book at work (read on my break sometimes) so decided to start another that evening until I could get it.

message 31: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (quakerwidow) | 155 comments I prefer to finish one before starting the next. That said, there are books I start and do not finish, especially if I am interrupted or I mislay the book.

message 32: by Neil (new)

Neil (nabq) | 31 comments It has to be one at a time for me. More than one leaves me mixing the stories.
Particularly if they are the same Genre.

I have one book in my car for traffic jams, one book in my purse for hair dresser and doc appts, a third book downstairs for our TV-free afternoon once a week and one book that I'm reading before falling asleep in the bed room.

message 34: by FantasyBookNerd (new)

FantasyBookNerd It depends! My preference is one book after the other, but I usually have an audiobook going at the same time as a book that I am reading. However, I do flit between books, especially at the moment as I am doing that SFINCS competition.

message 35: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (prpltrtl946) | 4 comments I can’t hold books while I read. When I could, I only read one book at a time.

Now I have one book on each device! Including old phones that I use as kindles and library audios, I have two of those. My iPad and my phone. I use libraries and kindle unlimited to get my books.

I generally limit myself to 3 books, unless a library hold comes in. 8*)

message 36: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 2 comments I usually finish a book and then start another, even if it's really bad. I have only DNF maybe 4 books in my life cause I want to give them a chance. I won't continue the series if I don't like it though.

message 37: by Franchesca (new)

Franchesca | 5 comments I tend to read multiple books at the same time; one out loud with my partner, one to myself (usually on the toilet), and I usually have 5 books of short stories going that I read aloud, one story out of each, in between books.

message 38: by ella ☄. *. ⋆ (new)

ella ☄. *. ⋆ i can usually only read one book cause i get confused really easily but a bunch of my mutuals here can read 2-3 books at a time, so i think it just varies from person to person

message 39: by Sarah Lehman (new)

Sarah Lehman (sdelgado8404) | 116 comments I read one at a time. I get confused if I jump around too much

message 40: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessacumberlandcountypa) Barbara wrote: "I prefer to finish one before starting the next. That said, there are books I start and do not finish, especially if I am interrupted or I mislay the book."

Barbara, I am guilty of mislaying books too!

I like to read in multiples, usually 4-5 at a time.

message 41: by Meg (new)

Meg | 23 comments Laura wrote "I read multiple books at one time. Physical books, audio book, and an ebook" Yep I do that also as if my mood changes I switch between audios and ebooks. I usually have 3-6 going at one time.

message 42: by Anne Marie (new)

Anne Marie | 9 comments I read at least three different books at a time. I usually read one romance and one thriller and pick between them when I am in the mood for one over the other. And then I usually listen to an audiobook too which I put on in the car or while I am at work and do not need to be on the phone. I purposely pick vastly different books so I do not get confused while reading.

message 43: by Laureen (new)

Laureen | 19 comments Most of the time I read one book at a time although sometimes I will read two , one on the kindle and one physical book-I don’t want to break my reading streak on Kindle so I will read a bit daily while I finish my physical book. I’m not normal

message 44: by M I L K † (new)

M I L K † | 3 comments My problem is that I'll start reading ONE book then my ADHD starts to haywire and I go "Oooou was dat🤩" now I got FOUR books open & my cereals getting cold...

message 45: by Saskia (new)

Saskia | 1 comments I've always said that I can't read several books at the same time. But now I've been stuck on one for quite a long time, can't really get into the flow of reading and only continue reading it from time to time. I've already finished 3 other books now (but those one after the other) and just started a new one. So maybe alternate reading also works.... But they play(ed) in quite diffrent worlds so it's unlikely to mix them up.

message 46: by Alexandria (new)

Alexandria | 1 comments I read multiple at one time, if I'm really invested in 1 particular book then I'll focus solely on that, but I like the variety.

Did you try putting heavier books on a thick pillow?
I'm near-sighted and can easily read books like "Coming Home" by Rosamunde Pilcher (1200 pages, hardcover) as long as I put them on top of a pillow on my thighs.

message 48: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 41 comments I dont have difficulty reading multiple stories at ones. I dont confuse them or anything.

but something inside me finds it absolutely blasphemous to read more than one book at a time

message 49: by Adrian (new)

Adrian (adrianhendrik) | 1 comments Usually a novel on the go but I'll jump into graphic novels if I'm not feeling a big read on a particular evening. I might also have a short story anthology on the go for the same reason.

✧*̥˚ Charity *̥˚✧ | 2 comments I finish one book before moving onto the next, though i do want to try jumping between different books one day.
