This was a fun and interesting read. Some of the information enclosed I already knew, having taken material science classes in university, but the book was engaging and supplied new and intriguing information throughout.
Mark Miodownik is a material scientist who takes us on a personal journey to discover the science behind key materials in everyday life. A couple examples being: steel, concrete, glass, chocolate, etc. If you're not the kind of person that wants to read almost 300 pages on molecular structures and chemical reactions, don't worry! Here you will find the history and social impact of these materials along with molecular science that has been simplified and is approachable - or pass-over-able if you're only interested in the 'fun facts' so to say.
Some of my favorite parts included information on recent strides in material science and how foreseeable discoveries (discovers and seem to be just around the corner) could drastically change and improve how our lives and have incredible environmental impact. A fun example is concrete that is self cleaning and just happens to remove carbon dioxide from the air while going about the process - this exists today!
Would recommend to those scientifically inclined and/or interested, though no real understanding of chemistry needed.
