I greatly wanted to rate this only 3 stars but near the end is what made it four stars. The end is emotional, it's tragic, and yet the perfect ending to a book.
This book what I assumed would be much more scarier than it was really wasn't. It says it's about a curse with a witch on a town but I don't see it that way. It pegs the witch as the evil, the horrific being but she is not at all evil or fucked up the books synopsis claims her to be. No the real monsters of this book are the towns people and humans themselves. It's a great example how humankind mistreat those who are different, who are not "normal" in their standards. It shows how mankind is cruel and unforgiving. How freedom of speech and freedom of choice is huge and when its taken away how it affects everyone.
Mistreating, tormenting, punishing Cathrine the witch for over 300 years. Having her kill her kids then sewing her mouth and eyes shut and that if they ever opened all the town would die. The town does die because the eyes and mouth open but not because of her. She doesn't curse them. She doesn't attack. She stands and watches in sheer shock and astonishment not being able to help even though they mistreated her and deserve every death. Truly a good book but it could have been shortened by half.
