And definitely agree with Nirkatze's comment above... Alot of what Okorafor writes stems from her own experiences...
The first time I read this I didn't even compare it to HP. I can kind of see it on the second time around... I just really liked the world being built.


As for her other books--(view spoiler)

I watched Daniel Greene's video on the creation of the YA genre... it's a fairly new creation... the stereotype I have of YA is "fast-paced and emo" but that doesn't apply to everything. What does make something "YA"? Is it enough to just have teenage or younger MCs?
I was thinking Hunger Games for some aspects too, this book... but one difference--(view spoiler)

To me YA is a book that can be read by young readers and also enjoyed by adults. Granted some of the super emo books may not appeal to adults (Third Wing) but are still appropriate to a young reader. When Sunny (view spoiler)
I can see how this book may appeal to people but there were too many issues for me.
