Syasya | 2 comments depends, I'm a person who gets bored easily but is also curious. So usually if I start to get bored with the book I will look for spoilers of it, which will make my curiosity increase, if it's interesting I'll continue it, if not then it's done.

Akshay (onehappymonk) | 22 comments Mostly I try and finish but there are rare occassions where something is so terrible that I will abandon it partway - very rare. And even then, depending on how much it is annoying me, I might skip to the last chapter or so and see how it ends.

Keara :) (kearadooze73) | 11 comments depends- sometimes if I've been recommended it or bought it I will suffer through it but sometimes I just dnf it and come back to it later so I don't get into a book slump

Rori | 99 comments continue reading it out of respect to the money I bought it with.

Genesis Reyes | 2 comments It doesn’t happen often. I will put it down and try and come back to it.

message 408: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Goldstein | 125 comments I have so many books that I browse the shelves sometimes. If I dont like a book I find I just put it back on the shelf and try again later. If my local bookstore can use it more than I want to read it, I sell it to them for store credit. Bookwise. Dvds and Blu rays too. But to me life is too short to sweat it. I have dnf'd books from my local library as well. Every year I try to cull my shelves a bit. That is, ask myself if I will ever read a particular book or watch a DVD or Blu ray. If not I try to sell it or gift it to a friend. Or put it in a book donation bin.

Rebecca Cecil | 275 comments I try, but if I am on like page 60 and I am really not liking it or just trying to read it gives me a headache then I will put it in my give away books. If I really do not like a book I tend to regret having to read it, therefore why bother. I read for fun, if not enjoying the book toss it.

message 411: by [deleted user] (new)

I will try to finish it. I hate stopping in the middle of a book but if it is really bad then I stop and give up on it. I will try to read it again in the future though.

message 412: by Amy (new)

Amy Labbe I've just started (at age 50) DNF if I can't get into it. Life is too short to read something I don't love!

Emma Ramacciotti | 19 comments if I'm curious about it then it means I'm liking it even just a little bit.. so I'll probably finished it. if I'm not curious about it I'm stopping it even nearly at the end.. i prefer spending my time reading something i like than something I should read just to check the "read" box

colleen | 6 comments i usually wont dnf a book but i did ONCE and it was say you swear, let me know if i should continue but it was just way too cringey for me for some reason and usually i can push through stuff like that. but if im curious i will continue and push through till the end.

message 420: by PinkPanthress (new)

PinkPanthress | 19 comments I used to read every book until the end. There never was a DNF for me… one day, years after after my father had died, I tried to read The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. It was my 2'nd or 3'rd attempt.

But I just could not read it, the first few pages already had me bored and yawning.

Then I remembered Papa's words, "No book is worth my time, I read 5 to 10 % then I'll stop and discard it."

So now I just don't try anymore if it's not worth it… time is precious!

message 424: by Robert (new)

Robert | 1 comments I give a book the first one hundred pages and at that point if it still has not hooked me somewhat, I stop. No since making it feel like work, too many enjoyable reads.

message 425: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie If I don't like the book I won't finish it. Reading is supposed to be enjoyable and if I'm not enjoying it, why finish?

Syma Malik | 5 comments I can't for the life of me put it down. If I start reading a book even if it's bad I have to finish it. Moby dick was like this for me. I couldn’t concentrate but I had to finish it so I did.

message 437: by Panda (last edited Jan 27, 2024 02:55PM) (new)

Panda | 30 comments I often spend too much time with a book that doesn't hit, especially if it has great reviews and a promising synopsis. The one thing that gets me to drop it quickly is if there is anything offensive, not an intentional offensive character, for instance there was a book that I started that had very intentional gratuitous sexualization of tween children. Nope.

In general, however, I am trying to get better at pinpointing a book that might be slowish and then grow on the reader as opposed to something that disappointingly isn't for me. There are so many books that I want to read, and although I am fortunate enough to be able to read a large assortment of books in a year, my eyes are much bigger than my plate.

I do mark the rare DNF book as read. I considered it for a while, but overall my lists are for me to keep track of my reading as well as for those who find themselves with similar preferences to give them a fair idea of what they may expect to encounter. If I did not accurately mark books that are so horribly disappointing that I cannot bring myself to finish it, then I am not being fair to those who came before me and helped me picked on a book that I wasn't sure was a read or a pass. I really appreciate those that help me pass when I am on the edge of should I? as I get to avoid the whole DNF game that goes on in my head as well as the weird occasional guilt for not liking a popular book. Plus I risk the potential of forgetting and picking up the book, again! Nope.

message 438: by Jill (new)

Jill (jschneid3) | 1 comments I do both, if it is an author I adore, I will finish because I feel I owe it to them to finish. I have left a lot of unfinished books as well. I really do hate to walk away but agree with some other comments, life is too short to finish a book you don't like and I have a million other books I want to read.

message 439: by Brittany (new)

Brittany St. Laurent | 5 comments It depends on the book for me and how far I’ve gotten into it before I decide it’s not my cup of tea. If I’m more than halfway and the plot has just slowed down I’ll stick it out in hopes the author redeems themself with an amazingly satisfying ending. If I start reading a book and by four or five chapters in I still don’t care about the characters or the storyline I’ll DNF it.

jayla (semi-inactive) Typically I continue with it for a little bit to see if it picks up but if i’m really not enjoying it, I just dnf it. I don’t see the point in pushing through with a book that i’m
not enjoying.

message 441: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Croney | 35 comments I try to continue but if I really am not enjoying myself I force myself to quit. I usually read a couple more chapters after I start getting a bad taste in my mouth.

Dami (Taylor's version) | 2 comments Even if I didn't like it I would read it, I spent my time with Love Theoretically and gave myself a break but in the end I finished it

message 443: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan (joewalt) | 56 comments I once did abandon a book for two years, lacking a book to read,I prick it up and , started to read it, older that I first tried to read that book, this time I enjoy reading that novel.

Emily-Jane Barella | 3 comments I kinda skim read if it’s not too interesting to me but always finish the book

message 448: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinatoo2013) | 9 comments I abandon it. Life is too short to force myself to read something I'm not enjoying. When I was younger, I would read every book I started, no matter how much I hated it, because I felt like abandoning a book made me a failure. But there are so many books out there, and there's just no point in sticking with one that I don't like.
