Sarah Jane Lynn wrote: "I tend to finish the book out of curiosity. It's a sickness ;)" Same!! I usually don't enjoy the experience but if a book ended up on my list it is because someone recommended it or because it blew up in popularity and I want to know why.

Jessica M. Diaz | 25 comments Abandon! There are wayyyyyyy to many great reads out there to suffer through one that doesn’t hold my interest.

message 205: by Punya (new)

Punya | 4 comments I would try reading it out of curiosity but I would give up and abandon the book

message 206: by Marian (new)

Marian Wendelin | 11 comments I tend to abandon it, especially if it's an audiobook. If I don't want to abandon it but am just having trouble progressing, I put it aside and read something more fun, then try to come back to it. I actually do that quite a lot.

message 207: by Jeanine (new)

Jeanine | 80 comments I’ll read till 50 pages in. Then if I still don’t like it, I abandon it. I might try it again in a few months.
For book group, we had chosen Game of Thrones. I read to page 137. It just wasn’t grabbing my attention. After our meeting, I put the book in a Little Free Library.

message 208: by Megan (new)

Megan Rose | 40 comments Partly out of curiosity, but mostly so I can say I read it and no one can tell me to finish it cause they think the later parts were good.
If I really REALLY don't like it, I'll just read the ending.

message 209: by Aideen (new)

Aideen | 18 comments Depends how far I'm into the book, let's say like 70% I'm gonna finish it because I don't like dnfing books. But if I'm below 50% I'll get up to that point then decide to abandon or continue.

message 210: by Zee (new)

Zee (zeesmuse) | 33 comments typically, i'll suffer through to the end. the few i couldn't, I skipped to the last 2 chapters and called it done.

message 211: by Tracey C (new)

Tracey C | 4 comments It depends on the book. Some of them I’ve suffered through, others I dnf. Sometimes if I’m curious but the book isn’t improving I’ll just skip to the end to satisfy my curiosity, especially if it’s a stand alone novel.

BethK | 17 comments Hyun wrote: "I don't finish it. When I try to, I usually fall asleep."

Well, you could save them for a time when you've got insomnia. :)

message 213: by BethK (new)

BethK | 17 comments It depends.

If I'm reading it for my own pleasure and don't like it, I might slog on for awhile hoping it gets better. If it's nonfiction for my own edification, and it is demonstrably wrong, I'll put it down (and rate accordingly). In either case, I'll put it on my "set aside" shelf.

If it's something I "need to" read or finish for a class or for a professional reason, sure, I'll "force" myself to finish. I can agree with myself to finish a number of pages or chapters each day or week.

I read some things for Netgalley, given to me for my honest review. I'm usually pretty good at picking out books that I *want* to read, but sometimes I blow it, or even find something I will see as wrong (and review accordingly). I'll slog on to finish it, perhaps speed-read parts of it, and then review it as to why I disliked it.

message 214: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Depends on how much I don’t like it and how far I’ve read into the book. I’m trying very hard to read “Trust” right now. It’s very slow and I’m not sure I will finish it.

Amanda’s counting the days 🐾 (ajosephine) | 30 comments I honestly don’t think I ever quit on a book. I’m not bragging or trying to say I’m better than anyone, that just wasn’t ever an option, like in school or higher education, and now it’s part of me, I guess. I understand why trigger warnings are a thing now, but same goes for those - no one cared if I didn’t like what I was reading or was triggered - if you wanted to do well, deal with it girl.

message 216: by ☆ Sofia ✧*。 (new)

☆ Sofia ✧*。 Yeah I finish the book usually speed read though

message 217: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Emma Robins (kaylarobins) | 63 comments Very true @Sofia, I act like that too.
I do the same in the case of passages in books where, for example, they insist on endless descriptions.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

message 218: by Callisto (new)

Callisto Adalwen | 18 comments Continue. I feel bad about not finishing books. But I might skim it, though.

message 219: by Shani (new)

Shani (shaniodiamar) | 2 comments I have to commit to finish in almost 80% of the time or else my shelf will feel like a netflix subscription.

message 220: by Dimi (new)

Dimi Tsioubris I had Baudolino by Umberto Eco which I tried to reed almost 4 times, always stopped somewhere in the middle, I think the fifth time I managed to finish it, and you know what? Now is one of my really favorite books, Umberto Eco is one of those difficult writers which he really has to put you in deep in the world he is building, otherwise you won't be able to understand the book, so he always has some sort of introduction in the beginning, if you manage to pass that part, then the book pays off a lot!

message 221: by Dimi (new)

Dimi Tsioubris Read*

message 222: by Lady (new)

Lady Dazy (mrscsmith) I often abandon a book when I am not enjoying it. Sometimes a book will sound good from the description, but when I start to read it, I realise that it is not what I thought it would be.

message 223: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Emma Robins (kaylarobins) | 63 comments @Lady Dazy
I can't do this, curiosity is killing me, I have to know the story!
My luck is that now I have enough time to read!

Robert Robertson (trk06) | 52 comments I always finish a book once I've started it . It can take a while but I soldier on .

message 225: by Ajyah (new)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

message 227: by Yuehua (new)

Yuehua (yuehua35) | 5 comments I would abandon it lol at least momentarily. Simply because if I find the story boring I can't continue a book

message 228: by Kei (new)

Kei (kei02dx) | 2 comments Continue but I'm gonna speed read it

message 229: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (quakerwidow) | 155 comments Depends on what I dislike about it. I'll ditch it at once if page 1 has BDSM or pubic hair. Otherwise, I'll continue because it is probably an ARC and I cannot in good conscience review it unless I finish it.

message 230: by JB (new)

JB | 10 comments I do not like to not finish, but also don’t want reading to feel like a chore. If I’m a good bit in, I try to finish it. If I’m just getting started, I’ll let it go.

message 231: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 Read first 50 pages then to DNF

message 232: by Michaela (new)

message 233: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (harrypotter8) | 30 comments If I don't like the book I'm reading, I force myself to finish it. I don't like leaving a book when I've already started reading it.

message 234: by Corbyn (new)

Corbyn | 1 comments Unless there is something about the book that I really don’t want to be consuming (sexual content, etc) I will finish it anyways.

message 235: by saraslay (new)

saraslay | 11 comments i cant dnf a book…

message 236: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Emma Robins (kaylarobins) | 63 comments @Corbyn
I happened to like the story so much that I simply skipped the passages with explicit erotic content.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

message 237: by Avni :) (new)

Avni :) | 49 comments I often abandon it, regardless of which point in the book I am at, and revisit the book a few months later. I've done this with Wuthering Heights (unfinished), Fellowship of the Ring (also unfinished) and more. I'm currently about 60% of the way through Dracula, but the pace of the novel has really slowed and the sexism is really annoying me! Should I force myself to finish it or abandon it?

message 238: by Viggo (new)

Love to hate them, me to... 🤭

message 240: by javurkova_misa (new)

javurkova_misa | 77 comments it depends. if it's some very popular book and I'm in the start I continue but if I'm like in 150 pages in and Ion like it I js DNF it cause I don't like to forced myself to read

message 241: by Neil (new)

Neil (nabq) | 31 comments It depends. Maybe because I am stubborn that I always try to finish a book

A book has to be really bad for me not to finish it.

message 242: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 116 comments it depends really. most of the time i finish reading it, however sometimes it puts me in a reading slump so i just put it back on the shelf, and pick out my favourite book(Black Beauty by anna swell), that book alway gets me out of reading slumps. i swear i read it a 100 times, but it’s something about it that i can reread, and reread, and reread and not get bored of. and after a while i come back to the book i was struggling with. sometimes for me it’s that i feel like i’m not ready to read it and just need some time to re focus!

message 243: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Hubsky (antivancrowe) | 2 comments Honestly, depends. If I can’t get into it by like 50ish pages I usually do drop it. Or if like something really gives me the ick.

message 244: by Gypsy (new)

Gypsy (ignited_red_queen) | 25 comments I used to push through the books just to finish it, but this year my resolution had been to DNF instead of pushing through it because then it leaves a bad taste.

message 245: by Alan (last edited Dec 04, 2023 09:26AM) (new)

Alan | 3 comments I struggle to put down a book I do not enjoy. To finish it, I make myself read 10 pages a day. Once I read my 10 pages, I will switch to another book for the remainder of the day.

message 246: by Tina Miles (new)

Tina Miles (slrivergirl) | 11 comments I will usually give it a couple chapters plus I’ll go read some reviews to see if it will improve, before stopping.
With a TBR of 100+ books, life is too short to read books I don’t like. So I will stick it in a DNF Kindle folder just in case I decide to try it again.
That said, if it’s recommended by a friend I will finish it.
I don’t do a negative review of the book, except for once when the book was so utterly dreadful a 5 year old could’ve written it.

message 247: by [deleted user] (new)

It depends because I am reading a book just like that but so many people say its good so I am still reading it.

message 248: by ali (new)

ali | 76 comments It really depends. Like if it's the last book in the series then of course I'm going to finish it! But after that it really depends on whether or not I'm having fun reading the book.
If I'm having fun reading the book, even tho I hate it, then I'm going to keep reading. But if I'm bored I drop the book so quick lmao
